  • DENSO alternators are not only original equipment on many of the world's top production cars; they are a favorite in motorsports as well, where their light weight, high efficiency, and durability under the most demanding conditions make them the natural choice. Remanufactured DENSO alternators go through a grueling process. Stators and rectifiers are tested to 300 volts, while rotors are submitted to 600 volts, all to ensure reliable performance. Rotor slip rings are buffed to an 8 micron surface finish, with runout limited to 20 microns, minimizing brush wear and abrasion. Bearings are validated to OE standards and loaded with premium OE standard lubricants. New or remanufactured, a DENSO alternator is a quality component. Offered in versions from 40 to 160 amperes and beyond for hundreds of specific vehicle applications, all alternators meet DENSO's rigorous First Time Fit standards. Contemporary cars employ dozens of sophisticated electronic systems from bumper to bumper, placing heavy demands on the charging system. The alternator is no place to cut corners. DENSO First Time Fit alternators meet or exceed all manufacturer standards, mount properly with a minimum of installation issues, and provide years of reliable service. Features. Premium cores and precise OE assembly benchmarks; Design to meet the grueling heat and electrical requirements; First Time Fit provides perfect mounting with no belt/pulley alignment issues; Benefits. Service professionals preferred DENSO's alternators for a trouble free solution; OE quality fit, appearance, and durability; Full compatibility with sensitive electronics systems; Compact and lightweight design

4.0 alternator from a jeep grand cherokee

Question From Scott701 on 4.0 alternator from a jeep grand cherokee

Hello All, I am new to the forum and pretty excited. This place comes highly recommended.

My question is thus: How many revolutions per minute is required for an alternator of this size (one that came from a jeep) to function normally/safely? How many revolutions will produce too much heat for proper function? Is there a limit to what this alternator can handle?

Response From aabbaachiii

the charging system's primary purpose is to provide power for the car's electrical load, for example, ignition, lighting, audio system, accessories, etc., and to recharge your vehicle's battery. The alternator's output capacity is directly proportional to the RPM of the engine and alternator temperature. Charging systems are normally sized by the car manufacturers to provide at least 125% (when operating at high RPM) of the worst-case OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) electrical load, so that the car battery can be recharged.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

All that was requested was what it can do and that it came from a Jeep. No telling if this is to make up some other generating thing or what yet. Properly mounted, wired it should put out the rated amps without harm and could spike higher for short times but would make itself hot enough to ruin it inside, wires to it and plug-ins. Wild higher RPMs was not the idea of alternators. Generators kept making more commensurate with RPMs they were turning. Alternators reach that much earlier than maxed out engine RPMs.

Let's wait and see what the project is all about,

Thanks for the informative responses! I am not trying to waste anyone's time with nonautomotive problems, but my little project should function a lot like a car. I have this alternator from a friend's old jeep and am trying to rig something up to charge a car battery with my grandma's old stationary bike (saw it on youtube). I am hoping to use the car battery to run the electric motors on my hot tub. If I understand the info about alternators above, RPMs from a serpentine belt are different from those of just a regular crank, and the alternator should be run at about half of the indicated limit with a simple sprocket crank...?

Again, thank you for the timely responses.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Suspected you were thinking on those lines. Think harder. The power to "pedal power" to charge a battery would have you worn out in a few minutes when perhaps all day would just be enough.

The drag of a hard working alternator will pull down RPMs of an engine. Pedaling is not match,

This guy rigged up a system where he had a 40-to-1 turning ratio put on the alternator. It was enough power to drive that little food processor... regardless of drag, wouldnt 2100 rpms=2100 rpms? And what if the ratio was enlarged? (I realize it'll be hard work regardless, but it'll still be easier than running a big fat wire out to the damn hot tub. :P)

By the way, you're cool for answering these questions.

Forget the millenniums old urban lore out there. Study Issac Newton. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only altered. Every time you take a given source of energy, convert it to another you lose a small to large %. An alternator is not some magic item that created more than it took to turn it in fact it's far less but better than some other ways.

Ex: If you need a fan to turn by pedal power in this case just put a belt system from a pulley on pedal device direct to the fan you get close to 1 to1 efficiency. Create electricity to run the fan with electric power you lose efficiency.

Let's get simpler. You want to beat eggs in a bowl. Manual crank beater is direct. If you want an electric beater (handy, faster etc.) your whole body probably couldn't pedal the electric power needed to run one for just a couple minutes if just done only when needed.

Your hot tub scenario. Making heat out of electricity is a super pig. Making an electric motor pump is a total pig. It would take a team of horses to generate that much power.

In short - no free lunch,

Tom

Ok. Got it. Thank you.

Response From nickwarner

Hot tubs run on 220v electricity. The amperage they draw isn't too high because the voltage is so high. But to drop down to 12v would require hundreds of amps and wouldn't be feasible. If you want to heat a hot tub with something other than electric there are wood heat kits available and natural gas.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Please clarify what you are up to. Amp rating of alternator is usually stamped on it. As installed in a vehicle engine RPMs and RPM of items on pulley system are not the same by simple pulley size. As installed most alternators should peak out ability by around 1,200 engine RPMs. If/when pumping out it's max rated power for extended periods it will get hot and can ruin it. As installed in a specific vehicle with all things normal it should handle the power needed to run items in that vehicle with engine running and keep up at idle. Double that doesn't get you double.

When battery is drawn below full charge like when starter is cranking by battery alone the system replaces that lost amount quickly such that pretty much battery isn't doing the work but can cover shortfalls of power for X amount of time.

If you are creating something from this alternator to do something non automotive you need to know the load it would need to carry. Even I'd have to calculate how many RPMs alternator pulley turns vs RPMs of crank pulley to know it's RPM which is higher then engine RPM.

Gut feeling is they will tolerate 1/2 of rated load continuously but would overheat at full load and fail,

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee loses power

Question From dwmcclure84 on 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee loses power

1999 Jeep Grand CHerokee 4.7 L V8 149K

I have a jeep grand that will just die while driving. The jeep literally loses all power. It does not appear to matter if I am at highway speeds or stopped at a light, it will just shut off with no power. Sometimes it will restart within a few minutes-other times it's hours. It was throwing an error code of P0443 (EVAP system) and I had the purge solonoid replaced today. When leaving the repair shop it died two miles away. Any ideas?

TIA!

Response From Discretesignals

Normally an EVAP concern or problem won't cause a stalling and no restart situation. In your case the P0443 is a purge valve circuit code which means the PCM detected an open or short in the purge valve circuit. A problem in that circuit shouldn't cause your concern unless it is linked to a wiring problem in a harness with other wiring that is crucial to the running of the engine that may be damaged or chaffing on something. If the code comes back, they are going to have to diagnose the code more accurately.

The problem with something like this is that it needs to be diagnosed when the engine doesn't want to restart. That means checking your basics such as fuel pressure, injector pulse, spark, and computer activity. One or more of those things are going to be missing when the engine doesn't want to restart. Once you know what is missing, you can formulate a strategy to diagnose where the problem is most likely to be.

Response From dwmcclure84

Any idea on how to accomplish that? Should I buy a code reader and plug it in when it dies?

Response From Discretesignals

You can plug in a code reader when it dies and doesn't want to restart to see if the PCM is alive and able to communicate with your code reader. That is only one piece of the puzzle though. Even though you are able to communicate with it doesn't mean if it is getting the inputs it needs to perform certain outputs or if the PCM is capable of controlling the outputs even though it is getting the correct inputs.

Like I mentioned above, you need to check for fuel pressure using a gauge, injector pulse, and spark during the no start also. Find out what is missing and then go from there.

Sorry I don't know how to do any of that. I can use google and forums and that about sums up what I know about cars. I have successfulkly replaced the alternator in it using youtube :)

It all started when the light was left on in the car overnight. so i charged the battery with a yellow box that clips on the battery. so then i tried starting the car and it started, then it cut off. i tried again and it wouldn't start. I thought the problem was the battery again but my dad said it wasn't because the car is starting it just wont stay started so it another problem.

ive included pics and a video to help you guys help me out

update:
someone posted a comment on the youtube vid saying check fuel pump so i educated my self as much as i could on the fuel pump and i went out to find it in the jeep and i found a fuse box, Ive included pictures of that also. so i open it up and locate the fuel pump fuse, and in the link i included above "pictures of engine" click on that and i added more pictures of the fuse box and fuel pump fuse.

so i really hope someone can respond to my post soon because fixing this jeep is urgent.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Did you charge the battery or just use a jumper box? Bet by looks of battery that it's junk and should have a date on it. If over 3-4 years just going dead can kill them and if it starts will choke out the jumper box and strain the alternator.

Charge the battery with a charger out of the vehicle. Then have it tested. If still ok then clean the thing up and the connections.

If the vehicle has some funky alarm system a dead battery would possibly disable it till reset,

T

Response From helpmejeep

I used a jumper box. it is an old car and it still has its factory battery on it. but on the youtube video someone mentioned fuel pump

Response From Hammer Time

Pay me now or pay me later............. later is always more money.

Response From Sidom

With any diagnosis, you always, always make sure your battery is good before running ANY tests.

Pull the battery, take it down to a shop or parts house and have it tested. Most will do this for free on loose batteries...

Response From helpmejeep

Update:

my dad and i were taking it down to the west side to get it fixed and (i drove in a car behind him just in case it would break down in the middle of the road) stoped to get gas and we he started it again he said that he didnt have to put his foot on the gas while starting it. so it was fixed. he tryed again and it was just fine. so now its back in the garage all fine. BUT we do need to replace some old parts.

Thanks guys!!

Response From Hammer Time

All fixed huh? Don't bet on that.

Response From helpmejeep

haha yeah but my parents are very cheep so we are staying away from repairs :/

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Cheap is one of the most expensive ways to approach a car repair! If you think, or parents, car repair is easy or cheap to even do you are in for a HUGE surprise!

Bet I have over 100 grand in just hand tools - want to donate? So far I think it's free to walk!

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The pic showed INTERSTATE as the brand of battery and not used as OE for Jeeps. Lead/Acid car batteries don't last 15 years no matter what you do.

What is probably happening is the battery croaked AND makes no decent connection to the cables. The jumper box didn't charge the battery but rather was connected to the cables directly and perhaps not any charge got to the Jeep's own battery. When that dead just removing the jumper box the Jeep would just stall out - no spark, no fuel delivered and a very dead battery won't even let the alternator keep it going alone.

Need to know battery is good and fully charged with good connections as said or this thing isn't going anywhere,

Question From irish3023 on 97 jeep grand cherokee laradeo problem

i have replaced the wires on my 97 grand cherokee laradeo and it started up just fine . i went to start my truck this morning and it wouldn't start , so i got a jump and it started but wont hold an idle but you are able to hold the gas a little and put it in gear and drive . After i drove 2.5 miles i turned the truck off thinking it was fixed nope it wont start . i also have no power locks or power windows i need help my wife is giving birth tomorrow and i need my jeep asap

Response From Hammer Time

You need to charge and test the battery and it's connections first, and then the charging system when you get it running.

Response From irish3023

i have had the battery and alternator both tested and was told both are working properly

Response From Hammer Time

Well, apparently not. If your car started with a jump start then you have either a dead battery or a bad connection to the battery.

Response From irish3023

well to all i fixed the jeep it had a bad ground, a bad battery ,a bad gasket on the oil filter and a bad lower ball joint on the passenger side. i fixed all these problems and the jeep runs great i love it thanks for the ideas.
