I have a 2006 honda civic. I have been have a reoccuring issue for a while now and just cannot figure it out. The issue is most of the time when I try to turn my car over (not everytime) it wont start, sometimes it makes a sound sometimes it doesnt. The dashboard and radio flicker while I try to start it and it will turn on at some point if I fuss with it. A month ago i had my car diagnosed and was told that the alternator was not charging. So I replaced the alternator and then found out due to the alternator being bad so was the battery, so I replaced that. Now after both were replaced the car still did the same thing but after 2 days all the issues went away. Now its been a week since then and today it started again... not only did it do the flickering and not wanting to turn over, it also will show my battery dying indicator light and the battery starts to die if I am stopped for too long. Has anyone had the same issue? Please let me know.

Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Next time it doesn't want to (assuming) crank. Check for 12 volts on both the starter trigger and battery cable wires while someone is attempting to crank the engine. If that is good, take your volt meter and touch the case of the starter with your positive lead while your neg lead is connected to battery negative. It should be less than 0.5 volts while attempting to crank the engine. Let us know what you find out.

Hey I have a 98' Honda Civic that has 3 alternators and it continues to shut off. I've got the last 2 alternators from the junk yard, so I don't know if maybe that is why. I bought the alternator about 2 weeks ago and my radio shuts on and off, then the speedometer goes crazy then the car just shuts off. I had the battery tested and it is fine. Could there be another problem why my car keeps shutting off?

I'm guessing the battery goes dead or way too low when this happens. That will kill most batteries alone and alternator needs a good battery to work. Charge battery if it will and look for what voltage you get with engine off and again with it running. If no change or ever seen lower than 12.2 or so volts off it's (battery) is in trouble. While running it should be able to maintain over 13 volts even with items running. Car seems to go dead from lack of charging - no spark no fuel as both are electrically driven.

Test the alternator(s) - the large outlets do that as a courtesy so you'll know it's good. Not sure your battery really is all that good and should test again or if older consider tossing that for new. Take a hard look at the cable connections too. They can corrode and not make a very good connection at all,

Which engine 1.7 or 2.0?

Check engine light on? Check for trouble codes

If there are no trouble codes or no trouble codes related to your symptoms your going to have to do the basics


Check for spark using a spark tester
Check fuel pressure (might be hard on that one because you need special adapters).
Check for injector pulse using a noid light or oscilloscope.
Run a compression test and write down the numbers.

Hi,

About 1.5 years ago I purchased a 2003 Honda Civic EX with 130,000 miles on it. Since then I've had to have the head gasket replaced twice (second time was due to a faulty head gasket used the first time). The check engine light is on and the code is a bad EGR valve. The ABS light is on, and I don't know why. Now the car is making a weird rattling noise coming from the engine... Also the alternator light flickers on and off.

Do I cut my losses and get rid of this? I worry about my safety. Thoughts? Thanks in advance

That's up to you. You don't even know what the car needs yet. You can't even know if it needs the EGR because nothing has been troubleshooted yet. Head gasket failures are usually the result of severe overheating so you can't blame the car for that.

I understand that. However, I'm concerned that this engine rebuild due to the head gasket (twice) has caused a cascade of needed repairs. They shut the check engine light off and it came right back on with the egr valve code. The ABS light and rattling also concern me.

What does an egr valve replacement usually cost?

As I stated already, you don't know if you need an EGR valve right now. Just because you have a code related to the EGR doesn't mean the valve is bad.

Codes for an item don't mean you need that item at all. It means for any reason that circuit isn't working properly. ABS - who knows and you can get codes for that as well but need interpreting via a diagnosis.


Rattling, battery light? Possibly loose belt or at the end of it's adjustment extreme and or something loose with brackets or exhaust parts making noise but not the battery light.


If you are on the edge of swapping out this car for another then perhaps you should take it in and get a full diagnosis as to what it will take to fix up all the things you pointed out plus perhaps some you don't see or notice yet and decide to go for it and swap out for another. Another is no guarantee either but if used again have it checked out BEFORE purchase.


Only you can decided on keep this car or not but need to know how much it going to take to put it back in shape. Can't know all of that all at once without the diagnosis already suggested,

Ok so my car seems to be having problems starting. I don't know why but random times it won't start. I put in a new battery and even checked the starter but that was good. I don't know if it can be the alternator. Should I go ahead and check that. What do you guys think it is? Its random and happens rarely but I just want to fix it.

shaf; The very first thing would be to check all connections at the battery (cables can be corroded internally), at the starter itself, and ground connection. Have the starting/charging/battery tested just to be sure. Intermittent problems can be a nightmare to find. The most common problems are a faulty ignition switch or starter.

Same thing with my mother in law's honda civic and the problem was the spark plugs and spark wires after i changed them everything became fine. Also it could be the distrubitor so you may wanna check that too .

I don't know how you eliminated the starter but that can't be done if you have an intermittent problem.

That test doesn't prove anything. You have an intermittent failure so unless your able to test the starter on the car, and during the failure, you won't be able to eliminate it as the problem.
