Question From 93 honda del sol on 93 honda del sol wont start, HELP!!!

I have a 93' honda del sol,D15B 1.5 single overhead cam. approx. 193,000 miles. i had bought a new battery, new alternator, and a new starter for it and it is still having problems. it wont start first of all unless i jump it. and if i do it will bog down and pretty much die. all the eletric will die and make the rpm's and speedometer stop working. first thought would be the alternator, but i had put two new ones in. please help me!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Is power getting to the alternator - fuse, fuseable link or something not allowing it to work,\?

T

Response From 93 honda del sol Top Rated Answer

i dont think so. because something is stoping power from getting to the battery and alternator. could it be the generator? or what about a coil pack, or ignition coil?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Basics: You only last as long as the charged battery and all other faults are the result. An alternator need power to work so separately tested it may be good.

IDK - there may be a fuse, fusible link, or something getting in the way of the alternator working. Sorry I don't have specifics for the exact car...........

T

PS: It's VERY hard on a battery to run it down all the time. They make special ones for that - regular car batteries should be working on the top 10% all the time, IMO and alt doing the work when running............

1992 Honda Accord - Won't start but battery good

Question From rieflin on 1992 Honda Accord - Won't start but battery good

1992 Honda Accord
Engine: ?
Mileage 240,000

Parked the car last night. Was running great. This morning it would not start.

All internal lights are strong. Battery new 6/2010.
Hooked my other car up to jump the Honda per my friend's recommendation. No change.

The car makes no normal clicking noise when we try to start the car. I also tapped the alternator while my son turned the key. no change.

My friend says he thinks its a bad alternator but he wasn't sure. Any ideas from the car experts out there?

Response From Hammer Time

I don't know why your banging on the alternator. The trick is to tap the starter while someone is trying to start it.

Response From rieflin

Thanks for your reply.

I was tapping on something. Starter or ignition I don't know. The item was metal, had a lot of visible copper coil on the inside and had a belt attached to one side of it. So - was it the starter or the ignition? I'm uneducated but a willing learner.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You'd better get a shop to look at it then.

Response From re-tired

for the record it was the alt you described .. while its good that you want to learn . you can do more harm than good. as Hammer suggested , have it towed to a shop. and after repairs ask if mechanic can give you a short tour of your eng compartment.invest in a DIY type manual (haynes)

1998 Honda Accord doors ajar, E-brake & foot brake warning lights on

Question From comnavguy on 1998 Honda Accord doors ajar, E-brake & foot brake warning lights on

1998 Honda Accord V-6 with 138,000 miles.

Problem: battery charge light, ALL doors ajar lights and both brake warning lights on dash are permanently on. This started not long after the lady had her battery replaced. The alternator is on the very low side of the Normal range - about 13 volts. Since this is low enough to light the BAT light is it most likely that it is too low therefore causing these other warning sensors to go into a "fail safe" mode ?

Even when we put a load on the alternator, AC, lights, radio, brake lights and interior lights, the alternator output doesn't dip. Maintains the 13 volts. Would you drive this car until payday Friday ?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Any codes being stored in the PCM? PCM controls the field circuit in the alternator.

Question From 78escarcega on alternator

i have a honda alternator ahga50 asta7091zc ed 12v 5210 ..
i have alternator and i want to known how to text if its working its not connected to a car it will be connected to a dc motor for and electric tricycle ..

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You would need a battery for actual power or charge it/them and doubt you can spin an alternator fast enough for your project - neat idea but really doubt it would work,

Tom

Response From Discretesignals

I'm confused. You can get the alternator tested at most automotive part stores.

I don't quite understand what your building, but if the DC motor is driving the alternator and tricycle, your not really accomplishing anything unless your pedaling it to charge a battery with the alternator and then sometimes using the DC motor to power the bike. Your going to be pedaling your ass off to charge the battery and move the bike at the same time. With all the weight and resistance involved I hope your towing a crash cart behind it..LOL

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Way back when you could get a device for a bicycle that you flipped to turn on a tire and give you power for a headlight not much more than a flashlight and OMG you could feel the extra load from just that never mind powering it.

You are better off with plain pedal power than converting that to electrical power to propel this idea/bike,

http://www.electric-bikes.com/bikes/others63.jpgGo-Hub Hub Motor Kit
Designed for "Plug & Play" and reliability, kits are available for either 26" or 24" wheels. Wiring for the 24" kit was measured specifically for a trike but will work on a regular bike with 24" wheels. The controller on the 26" kits is mounted on the front of the bike with an aluminum clamp. This allows for better controller cooling and eliminates running the motor and throttle wires along the frame to the rack.
The Go-Hub kit uses the highly regarded B&B SLA batteries and Soneil charger. The hub motor is laced into an alloy wheel with heavy duty stainless steel spokes. The 26" kits use the 408 motor and the 24" kits the 409. The motor operates at 36V from three 12ah batteries. All of the connections, except for the battery, are inside the controller box. If components need replacing, then they are unplugged from inside of the controller box. This eliminates any external connector problems and gives a very neat "factory installed" appearance. The only wire running along the frame is the battery wire going to the trunk. All components are already factory connected except for the battery wire. Batteries and charger comfortably fit within a Topeak Super Trunk. The trunk slips into a track on the included Topeak Explorer rack and clips in place. No velcro or straps are needed. The trunk also has large side pockets to carry other items.
. . . . . . . . . ...................E bikes are all the rage nowdays.............

Response From Discretesignals

I guess an alternator for a 12 volt electrical system wouldn't work on something like that seeing how the batteries are wired in series to produce 36 volts.

I wonder what the speed of that is and the range. I would love to be able to ride my bike to work and not die of a heart attack...LOL

Yes you can charge the batteries with a 12v source .All you need is a series/parallel relay/switch. I use one on my airboat, which has a 24v starter , 12v lites radio , 12v gm alt.

Question From whisperer on Honda Pilot Batt light won't reset.

Hi, first post, just found you guys…. :)

I have a customers car, a 2007 Honda Pilot, that smoked the original alternator and left her on the side of the road. I picked up the car and diagnosed it. Yes, no charging and it just looked nasty too. OK, easy stuff. Replaced the alternator with a store-brand rebuilt and it is charging 14.6 Volts and the batt is running at 12.2 Volts when the engine is off. Perfect……….. Not.

I test drove it and the batt light was off. Gave it back to the customer and she called me within the hour. The Batt light had flashed a few times, went on and off for a few miles and is now on solid. I did a house call and the voltage still checks perfect. I checked for codes and there is none to reset. Tried the dash reset (Odo) and could not get it to change. Cables and outboard stuff looks fine.

What's up with this? Is there a secret Honda voodoo that I'm not aware of?

What is the PCM's system voltage on your scan tool. Have you done a full system scan to see is there are any DTCs stored in any of the modules?

PCM system voltage is 12.2V. No DTC's stored as indicated from my OBD2 handheld scanner.

The charging system is functioning correctly as far as testing voltages show and the car has been driven for days with no loss of charge or apparent problems. It seems this is a problem with the BATT light sensing circuit, not the charging system or battery.

You didn't answer questions so what's the point?

T AFAIK the only question you asked was "How old is the battery"?. It is a 2 year old Interstate that load tests good.

I do appreciate the help here but I am a 40 year master tech. I have already done all this "check the obvious" stuff. The battery is good, the alternator is charging well, the light is still on. That was the original post. Does anyone have experience with Honda BATT lights staying on after the alternator has been changed?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

40 years at it an still don't know about batteries!
I'm out. You seem to know everything so wonder why you are even asking,

So, that's how it is huh? Do you always go to this nasty place when someone asks a question that you don't know the answer to? It does seem that you are the person that thinks they know everything, and if you don't, you get abusive. I am not going to worship you because you can type (poorly) on a computer. I am just a guy that came here ASKING a question because I KNOW I don't know everything.

Response From Hammer Time

Hey Whisperer, this uses a gauge control module that controls the light. Have you looked into that.

Thanks for the reply HT. I have basically seen that there is one, but have not been able to get more info on it. It is supposed to be able to be reset like all later Nissans and some other Hondas by holding in the Odo reset button and turning on the Ign to the run position. I have tried that in all menus (Odo, trip and oil) and have had no luck, meaning it does not give me dashes that disappear that I am used to. Do you have more info on a reset procedure for this?

With the key on and engine off, if you unplug the alternator 4 pin connector, does the battery light go out?

It is a fairly simple circuit. The L (white/blue) terminal is grounded by the voltage regulator to tell the PCM to turn the lamp on. The PCM then sends data to the cluster module, so it can illuminate the lamp. It may be charging, but either the alternator itself has some issue with the lamp circuit, or the circuit is shorted to ground all the time. Wouldn't be surprised if you got a bum alternator.

Discretesignals - Thank you for this info. I will schedule the car back in and do what you suggest. Makes total sense. I did some other work on this car about a month before the alternator died and there were no lights at that time so it was not a ongoing issue before that time. The wiring looked OK at first inspection. I'm thinking that maybe the regulator is wrong/bad internally on the L circuit but the field driver circuit is OK? (Hoping anyway). You might be right, a bum rebuilt alternator.

The customer is on vacation for a few weeks but when they return I will get the car in and report back what solved the problem. Thanks everybody for your help on this.

Here's what I can find in Alldata

Nothing about resetting

I did see a TSB about a battery reset if you have no communication with the module.

HT, THANKS! With this info I should be able to get to the bottom of this problem. Thanks for taking the time to post the diagrams so I can work through this. :)

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If alternator "smoked" that bad instead of just not charging you should be looking for heat damage to wiring and probably blame the battery tested separately from the car. New but more common if older they short inside especially when an alternator is asked to charge up a bad one.

12.2V with nothing on or draining like after 10 minutes point right to a bad battery or never did get fully charged up,

Response From whisperer

"smoked" meaning slang term, not charging, not burned up. Wiring seems fine. Battery tests fine. 12.2V in car with no load. There is no significant draw on the system. No perceptive change with batt voltage after sitting for 12 hours so battery is not suspected to be bad. Customer still has car and it is starting and charging correctly for days now.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If the 12.2V reading is correct on your meter that's not a good battery! How old is it? Just in normal use they flake of dandruff to bottom inside and over time which lowers it's power (AMPS) and if the pile of junk touches bottom of plates for any reason usually a bump or handling it they can totally short out inside. Low volts with some age is a clue. Normal is exactly 12.6V as each cell contributes 2.1V to the show.

12.2 shouldn't cause a warning but IDK if that is a reset or when cranking falls below any norms and remember it? If it falls below ~9V when cranking it should set off a warning on most but go right out when running so perhaps this set up doesn't.

Watch for voltage drop while cranking is a good indicator as that's the most load a battery should sustain acting just like you are doing a load test on the thing,
