Question From mrtuckertown on Window stuck, can't afford new motor, just want to pull up...

So my window is down and won't go up. Money is tight so I can't afford a motor. Instead I'd just like the window to stay up until then. I pull up but it feels locked. Is there any way to get the window back in its closed position?

Thanks in advance.

Response From Discretesignals

Your not going to get the window up unless you can get the motor to run or you disconnect the window glass from the regulator and pin the glass somehow, which I don't recommend.

You sure the motor is bad? You have power and ground at the window motor connector?

Response From mrtuckertown

Well that is unfortunate.

It's more of a guess that the motor is bad. I'm a super newb at car repair. Assuming the motor isn't bad, would there be a cheaper alternative to remedy this?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

You need to find someone that can use a test light or volt meter to check for power and ground at the window motor's connector to verify it is indeed bad. If power and ground is missing to the motor, you can run an electrical bypass and get the motor to roll up the window. If power and ground is there, sometimes you can smack the motor housing with a screwdriver handle and get it to run. If that doesn't work, your going to have to replace the motor or pin the glass somehow.

Response From mrtuckertown

Sounds good, thanks!

99 Lumina Driver's power window R & R

Question From comnavguy on 99 Lumina Driver's power window R & R

1999 Chevrolet Lumina with 134,554 miles power window failed with window about half way. Troubleshooting has us down to the motor. Direct voltage to motor and nothing happens, and the window is not binding.

The Haynes manual gives poor pictures but lots of warning about spring(s) being under pressure and it's unclear what to do to lock the regulator to avoid injury. I've done a few power window motors and glass removals but this one is most confusing. I need some help.

Response From Discretesignals

That one has the scissor type regulator. You can't move the regulator to get the window up unless the motor is operational. You stated you had power to the motor connector. Did you have ground on opposite wire that had power with your switch depressed? Have you tried tapping on the motor housing while holding the switch to see if the motor wakes up?

If you do end up taking the regulator out to R and R the motor, you have to be careful and not let the arm fly back and hurt you when you remove the motor. The giant clockspring in the middle has a lot of potential energy. I like to put them in a vise in a way so when the motor is removed the arm doesn't move.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

comnavguy - As DS is saying the "other" wire has to be ground. Primal test is a plain test light back powered to light when you have ground. If you are right at the last plug to motor test it there. 12v power alternates from one wire to the other and at the same time ground is applied to the opposite for which direction the motor will turn. That for just the motor w nothing else involved.

If that tests and motor works wires in door jam hidden where they bend can be the issue. If you were the one who had this 1/2 way down when it totally quit and knew it worked fine right before that I say plain broken wire/connection likely that can break inside insulation unseen too,
