Headlight problem 2003 Subaru Outback

Question From japarks71 on Headlight problem 2003 Subaru Outback

I have a 2003 Subaru Outback. Both headlights do not work. New Bulbs, fuses are all good, High beams work as does the high beam relays. Driving lights and parking lights work. I think it might be the switch in the turn signal arm. The part is $82.00 Any ideas before i do this to save the money on trouble shooting or how to make sure this is in fact the problem?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Sounds like a dimmer switch failure.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

you say your high beams work, which means you have power to the switch. Look at the trigger terminal for the low beam relay. When you switch to low beam you should have power to that terminal. Make sure also that you have power to the constant terminal of the relay. If you get no power to the trigger wire when requesting low beams most likely cause is that switch.

Question From toi on 1997 Suburban Rear turn signals, brake lights dont work

checked the bulbs and fuse, but I also noticed that the blinker indicators in the dashboard blinks rapidly. Please help.

Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Hi Dan - toi,

Dan - this states "Suburban" not "Subaru" and the 97s I know of use the same bulb. I had this on "watch" as I wanted to see what might be said and have some thoughts now on this. What confused me is that it sugests this happens on both sides??

Ok: First note was that the dash indicator is blinking fast without blowing the fuse?? Ok: I think somehow the directional/brake filiment or wire to either is trying to empower the running lights. Could this be both bulbs are wrong and happen to fit? Don't know that one. This probably came with trailer wiring from factory all wrapped up in the back and ready to tap into or buy an adaptor. My bet is both wrong bulbs or a problem with trailer wiring.

For toi - you might notice the running lights dimly blink right now as it is,

Response From toi

Thanks Dan and Tom,

Tom thx for directing w/Dan that its a suburban and not Subaru. Thx anyway Dan.

Tom,

The bulbs are the right ones but for some odd reason at the same time I noticed the blinkers on the dash blinking rapidly, the brake lights and signals in back stop working??? I was checking the plastic bulb holsters and fuses again last night and they are fine, from what I can tell at least.

By chance would you know where I might find the wiring for tow and back lights at?

Thanks,
Toi

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You may not have that tow wiring but two - 96 and 97 did and it was up under the back tighed up on a support forward of the bumper. It had a plug on it that isn't the standard 4 wire trailer and I have just used that twice to make the simple four wire job up. Surely what was there OE was set up for electric brakes or something which I never needed.

Again - the fact that you aren't blowing a fuse means the drain is not enough to blow it but enough to make the flasher go fast which hooking up a trailer with lights does anyway without changing the flasher. If somehow the power got thru the bright filiment and tried to power the running lights I think that could happen. Dan would know better but I think the wires are colored with some uniform standard like .... green is right brake and directional, yellow for left (could have that reversed) brown is for running lights and white is for ground. If no power was being used up the flasher wouldn't flash. It's probably just some silly thing back there??

What do I know - I have days I can't replace a wiper blade

Question From dbwino on running lights

this is a 96 subaru outback wagon , the problem is when you put the fuse in the running lights come on and stay on if the car is running or not, and the turn signals dont work?

Response From 97MADCHEVY Top Rated Answer

You have A direct short from a positive wire going to ground /Solution buy A circuit testor at auto parts store connect the claw end to A good ground on the car frame and start from the front poking wires with a fuse in and your light's turned off , If you hit one that turns on light with the ligh's off trace the wire looking for crack's or bare wire's until you find it then simply cut splice in a new peice of wire and connect with A butt connector.

Electrical problems after inspection of 2005 Subaru Baja

Question From bklynpa on Electrical problems after inspection of 2005 Subaru Baja

I've owned my 2005 Subaru Baja Turbo for 5 years, it has 50,000 miles, and love it. The only problem I've had until now was I had to replace the Turbo charger last year.

I got the car inspected in Pennsylvania yesterday. Immediately after the inspection, the first time the horn was blown, it only made noise for a second, then the fuse blew and the horn stopped working, the turn signals started blinking very quickly, and the parking lights would not turn off. Then when I went to remove the key, it was stuck in the accessory position, and would not release until I removed the plastic housing around the steering column, and moved a small switch under the column.

Since then the key has worked fine, but every time you blow the horn, it blows for just a second and the horn/signal fuse blows out again, also the parking lights won't shut off. I actually had to remove the horn relay to prevent this from happening. NOTE: The problem with the parking lights only stopped when I removed the horn relay, not when I changed the fuse.

I guess my questions are:

a) Could the inspection have caused a short somewhere in the system? (I never had any electrical problems until the car was inspected).

b) What would be a good way (or place to start looking) to troubleshoot the problem.

c) should I just take the car to the dealer to figure this out?

Thanks for any help you all can offer.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Sounds like a short somewhere. Don't know why the problem would show up after a vehicle inspection. The problem would have to be located to determine a possible cause. Does this have an aftermarket alarm system? If you have a DVOM and schematics, you could trace down the short.

Response From bklynpa

Thanks, Yea, I figured there is a short someplace. I have a voltage meter, but not too great at using it. Guess I'll have to learn how. someone on another website said this:

Content full of links and deleted................. not allowed

Do you have anything to add to this???
Thanks!

Response From Discretesignals

Your post was edited, so can't add anything. The easiest circuit to start with would probably be the horn circuit. If you trace the horn circuit to the problem, you might find the relationship with the other problems. Have a feeling those are all related somehow.

Response From Hammer Time

It was mostly just an uneducated attack on dealers with a whole bunch of links to another forum.

Response From bklynpa

That's right hammertime. You seem to be a smart fella, Do you have any advice for me? BTW, there is no aftermarket alarm on the car.

Response From Hammer Time

The short has to be found with testing and troubleshooting on site with a wiring diagram. Nobody is going to have solid answers without seeing the car.

Response From bklynpa

Right on
