1986 GMC light issues

Question From Cornfield on 1986 GMC light issues

Hey all,

I'm currently having problems with the turn signals and interior lights on my truck. It's a 1986 GMC 3500 with the 5.7L engine.

The problem right now seems to be interference between the interior lights and turn signals. When I turn on the instrument lights, the turn signal "arrow" lights turn on solid, and the turn signals and hazard lights don't respond. With instrument lights off, the signals work perfectly. All other lights seem to work as well. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Cornfield

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Sounds like you have a ground problem somewhere. If you've had anything apart recently, go back and check for unattached ground wires.

Question From fastfreddy79 on no turn siganals 93 2500 gmc

I can not seem to get my signal light working I have replaced the relat and checked all the bulbs and now I am stumbed as I have just bought this vehical and the kid that owned it has stuff tapped in every where

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If same part - swap if two are used, the flashers for 4 way hazards with the one for turn signals if only a test for now,

T

Response From fastfreddy79

i replaced the relay with a brand new relay and checked the fuses and pulled out every bulb and all are ok

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Do your 4-way flashers work? It's not a relay it's a flasher and most use two. For turn signals it probably isn't the one at the fuse box,

T

Response From fastfreddy79

so if its not the one at the fuse box where is the second one?

Response From fastfreddy79

thanks I will give it a shot and replace the flashers

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Frequently the exact same part. I think one for turn signals is over your gas pedal underdash but not certain. If 4-way hazards are working you can feel it tick when on and harder with non working signals to find the dang thing,

T

Response From fastfreddy79

thanks it was the signal flasher the kid that owned it before me had put something selse in the flasher spot which is above the clutch pedal. thanks again

Glad to hear of the fix. Speaking for all regulars here glad to help and more glad that it was correct,

turn signal problem

Question From bobbypetrolia on turn signal problem

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra Z71. My problem is with the turn signal. Even with the turn signal off, the is an audible 'clicking' sound like the truck is turning. The turn lamps do not come on......just the clicking sound like when they are on (like when turning).......what is this? All the fuses are ok......no bulbs burnt out....etc. Is it the 'combination flasher canister fuse' under the dash? Driving me nuts! Thanks in advance.

Response From Jeff Norfolk Top Rated Answer

Sounds like you got it nailed already. Change that booger out and check back with results. If there are no fuses burnt now there will be soon if you don't fix this. Good Luck

Response From bobbypetrolia

Thx Jeff.......had an idea but wasn't sure.

Question From jules27320 on turn signal lights

Hi! I have a 1993 GMC Sierra 1500 8 cyl (4 wheel drive). Frequently the turn signal lights do not work (not even displaying on dashboard) at other times they do work. I pulled out the fuse and it appeared good. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Check fuse with test light, power on both sides when key in position where it should enable directionals and are NOT working,

Question From lemoncoke on turn signal problems

hello all,The problem I am having is that I put some led lights under my tail gate on my 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD. and they dont work when you use the left turn signal the whole bar lights and when you use the right signal nothing works when I first put them on htey worked fine but not anymore. Also when I use the turn signal and press the brake the indicator on the dash doesnt blink but if no brake is pressed the work fine. The cruise also didnt work a few times then it worked but if you used the blinker it would shut off the cruise. Now if all seems to work ok for now but not the led lights. sorry for the long post Any help would be appericated thanks truck has 100,000 miles and is a 6.0

Response From Double J

Where did you wire them into?...what part of the harness...

A lot of times when electrical "freaks " out its because of a faulty ground...electricity will back feed and look for ground.

check your wiring/ground....did you use shrink wrap on the electrical connections?..how did you tap into the wires?...butt splices?
they need to be weatherproof if exposed ...

Like when you said the turn signal shuts off the cruise...the stop lamp circuit will do that ...press the brake, cruise shuts off..

Did you use a wiring diagram for "this" vehicle?...

Sorry for the questions....just trying to understand...and clear it up so we can help ....

Response From lemoncoke

wired into the tow harness. The cruise went off when you put the blinker on to change lanes. I used soderless connectors with shrink wrap right on them. I hard wired a 4 prong plug to the tow harness then pluged the led light into the 4 prong plug. Hope I answered your questions. Also the problem with the blinkers and cruise I have heard is proble caused by the multi-function switch which is the blinker lever that has blinkers, cruise,hi beam, wipers and wiper spray. just wondering if this could be caused by thsi switch or if something is connected wrong.

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Well if your confident it's wired correctly.....

Yes then you could have a faulty multifunction switch....Lord knows Gm had a problem with these....all kinds of crazy stuff can happen when they fail...have seen loss of signals ,one side only....

look at this link....

Response From DrElectrics

They may be wired incorrectly, check back on your work, also you may have overload the flasher relays. Make sure you have the right one, You will need electronic flasher cans also as LED's vary in their load draw, this will adjust them. Try it and let me know.
