2000 Dodge Caravan struts

Question From Guest on 2000 Dodge Caravan struts

Hello. I recently had the van (98k miles) in the shop for alignment. It was pulling to the right. They said the pull was due to the rear tires being cupped due to needing struts. They said it would cost approx $1200 to replace all 4.

my questions are:
1- do i want to replace all struts or just the rear ones that they said were affecting the tires.

2- if i were to try to save costs, could i just do the bellows or just the mount or would it be best to replace the whole assembly?

3- is it a do it yourself job for an "intermediate novice"?

thanks

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

You may want to shop around for a better price. The strut cartridge is worn out, just replacing the bellows won't do anything. It is not a DIY job because you need a strut spring compressor. With the high mileage I would also recommend replacing the upper strut mounts as well. By the way, you will need another alignment after the struts are done due to the camber adjustment will be disturbed.

Question From mmmmsass4 on Strut replacement

2007 Dodge Grand Caravan with 150,000 miles. Front passenger side strut repair. I purchased quik strut assemblies for the front end of my van. Drivers side was simple - removed entire strut as a unit and installed pre-assembled new strut. On passenger side, the shock is broken. The piston rod that goes up into the center of the upper strut mount and is secured by a nut has ripped out of the upper strut mount. Not the three little bolts the hold the strut mount in place, the main bolt the holds the strut assembly together. I can slide the shock piston up & down with my hand. The outer spring is still under tension. My question: Do I need to rent a spring compressor to safely remove the strut assembly from the vehicle? Will lifting the vehicle remove the tension from the spring since it is no longer held compressed by the shock nut?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You won't be able to lift the van enough to relieve the spring pressure. You will need a spring compressor. Either that of just cut the spring in half with a cut off wheel. Be careful doing that though as there will still be some tension on it when the cut goes through. Take as much weight off the spring as possible first.

Response From mmmmsass4

Update: Took your advice, jacked the van up high and cut the spring in half. It wasn't under too much pressure and dropped right out. Finished up the job, no problems. Thank You!!

Response From Hammer Time

Glad to hear you got it resolved.

Closing this now as solved.

Question From Guest on Cant find positive charge for 2000 Dodge Intrepid

I can't find the positive charge on my 2000 dodge intrepid...we looked for 40 min...it's really weird the battery is low and the negative charge is easy to find but I can't find the positive one!! PLEASE HELP my car is dead!!

Response From dmac0923

uhhhhhhhhhh look for the + sign on the battery

if your using a test light and your not getting juice your battery is dead, replace battery

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

On those, the battery is installed in the fender well. Looks like you found the ground, by the strut tower. The Pos terminal is usally on the motor close by. It should have a red cap on it, that might help find it. If no luck, pull the air cleaner box & you can at least jump it from there...... You'll have to pull the wheel to replace the battery

2005 Dodge Grand Caravan - Auto hatch, will not stay open?

Question From RDabate on 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan - Auto hatch, will not stay open?

2005 Dodge Grand Caravan
Not sure of engine size.
80k Mileage

So, when I press the button for the automatic hatch in the back, it opens, but when it opens all they way, it seems to error out and it starts closing by itself.

Any idea why this might be happening? I don't see any adjustments on it, and not sure if it's an electrical problem or physical problem

Any help would be great, thanks.

Rick

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

While the lift gate is opening and you pull the handle that puts it into manual mode. In manual mode you should be able to manually fully open the lift gate. If the lift gate comes down, you probably have worn out lift gate prop struts.

Response From RDabate

The gate does not fall back down if I try to lift it manually. I'll have to check though, maybe they just don't have enough pressure to fully put it in the right position?

front passenger shocks/springs?

Question From mfabray on front passenger shocks/springs?

so today all of a sudden the front passenger side of my car seemed to drop, so i got out and indeed it did, now between thetop of the tire and the car there is only about 4" of clearance while the driver side has at at least 10"
so what could have broke? axel, schocks, springs?

02 dodge neon with 65k miles also i just had my transmission rebuilt and someone said that the auto shop should have noticed if there was something wrong cause it could be the transaxle but i have no idea.

Response From Double J

Probably a spring...

What kind of car is it?...year ,make ,model, engine size?
This will need to be inspected to verify what exactly broke..

Response From mfabray

02 dodge neon with 65k miles also i just had my transmission rebuilt and someone said that the auto shop should have noticed if there was something wrong cause it could be the transaxle but i have no idea.

Response From Double J

How long ago is "just had"...
Maybe something was left loose?

Or if its just co-incidence..something can appear ok...like a spring and break without warning ...
Did you hit any potholes, anything in the road, run over anything ?

Response From Guest

rebuilt the transmission three weeks ago. I did not hit any potholes or anything else.

Response From Double J

Look in there as dmac stated...look at the good side first so you can get an idea of what is supposed to look like.
Then compare the other side..

Suggest taking it back in to have 'em inspect it.

Response From dmac0923 Top Rated Answer

look in your wheel well and you will see what looks like a long shock absorber with a coil spring on it bolted to the knuckle on the bottom and at the top of the shock tower. This is a MacPherson Strut assembly and is what is on your neon. compare the two sides. the coil spring probably snapped and cause the strut to collapse or a mount broke

Response From way2old

Year, make and model will help a lot. If it is a generic vehicle, spring has broken. If specific vehicle, we need to know pertinent information. Please read the first post in this forum. Thanks.
