98 Jeep Intermittent starter problem

Question From carguy2 on 98 Jeep Intermittent starter problem

1998 Jeep Cherokee, 6-cyl, 135000 miles. Intermittent starter problem. Usually starts fine. But often after sitting when I turn the key, starter whines but doesn't turn. When release the key it makes a clunking sound. Then when I turn the key again it starts normally. Any ideas?

Thanks

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Sounds like a starter drive problem, but should check the flex-plate upon starter removal. Don't forget to check the basics...battery, connections, ect. Low voltage can cause all sorts of strange symptoms.

Question From jromano624 on 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7 with approx 138K miles. The vehicle has a new battery and the alternator was recently checked by my local autoparts store.

The jeep will not start unless it is jumped or you remove the battery cable and reinstall it. Turn the key and no noise, no clicking...nothing. Electrical components come on but does not start. I've checked the battery terminals and termination to the chasis to ensure the ground is tight. My next move is the starter and celenoid. Am I on the right path?

Response From Discretesignals

Did you actually clean the battery terminals with a terminal cleaning tool or wire brush. I've seen terminals that looked good, but where corroded enough to create a large voltage drop. Do you have a volt meter and know how to use it? Does this have an aftermarket alarm system?

Response From jromano624

There was no corrosion on the terminals however, I did remove them, clean them and reinstalled. My next move was to remove the starter and take it to the local autopart store but I could not turn the front drive shaft to remove the bolts. I just cannot afford to take it to a shop and spend hundreds on it. No aftermarket alarm system. Thanks for your reply.

Response From Discretesignals

Before you remove the starter get hold of a volt meter and do some voltage checks first. I've seen starters that get removed from vehicles work when they are tested, but won't work on the vehicle just because they were banged around. Doing some voltage measurements may save you from having to remove the starter or going on a wild goose chase trying to isolate the problem.

Another simple test you can do before breaking out the volt meter is to have someone hold the key in the start position while you tap on the starter motor housing. If the starter operates after you tap on it, starter needs changing. Don't smack it too hard or you can damage the magnets inside. If tapping on the starter doesn't work, do some measurements.

edit: one step I didn't add to that was to check for battery voltage on the solenoid terminal where the small wire is connected while having the key in the start position. If there is no power on the small wire at the solenoid terminal with the ignition in the start position, let us know.

Response From jromano624 Top Rated Answer

Great tip about tapping on the starter. When the key is turned and you tap on the starter, it starts. Now that I know it truely is the starter, my next item is to get the front drive shaft to turn. When I attempt to turn it by hand it moves about an eighth of a turn and stops. Any suggestions?

Response From Discretesignals

The front axle doesn't have a central disconnect or locking hubs to disconnect the front CV axles from the wheels. That means the front driveshaft spins while the vehicle is in motion no matter what mode you have the transfer case in. You won't be able to turn the front drive shaft by hand unless you have the front wheels off the ground.

Question From Traci K on My 2007 Jeep Liberty will not start, could it be the starter???

My jeep will not start! 2007 Jeep Liberty, V6, 62,000.

My battery died 2 weeks ago, took it in to be charged and jeep started. Today :( It did not start again, bought new battery, put it in...jeep started then died, two more times it did this, now it will not even turn over. all lights work, no sound when trying to start. I am new to Arizona from Nebraska and worried about looking for a new mechanic with out at least having an idea of what my problem is.

Response From GC Top Rated Answer

Need to get that battery charged and tested. Often, they do not have a good charge straight off the shelf, especially if theyve been sitting there a while without being maintained.

Response From Traci K

Thank you for the reply...tried this, the battery is good.

Response From nickwarner

Have you taken the connections off and cleaned them nice and shiny? If the connection isn't good it won't matter how good your battery is. A top post terminal cleaner is only a couple bucks at any parts store.

When you move to a new area and don't know who is good to take your car to, a site like angie'slist might be a good idea to try out. Its sorted by area and you can see reviews about shops, plumbers, carpenters, pretty much everything in service industry.

86 JEEP COMANCHE 2.5L NO START GREEN WIRE???

Question From dragtime92 on 86 JEEP COMANCHE 2.5L NO START GREEN WIRE???

SORRY this green wire which doesnt run to the starter looked under truck and doesnt seem to go to it.... so could anyone tell me what this green wire is it will turn over the starter if touched with positive.... all i can find out on it at the moment

Response From DanD

Does the truck start (crank) normally when you use the key?
If so; this green wire, may not need to be connected anywhere for your application.
Many times the manufacturers will use the same wiring harness with different configurations of the same vehicle and just not use all of the wires.
Looking at a wiring diagram for this vehicle; it shows two green wires coming off of the ignition switches start terminal. One of these two wires goes to the starter relay on the firewall; to engage the starter motor. The other would go to the glow plug timer relay, if this were a diesel engine application.
Usually these extra wires are taped out of the way, to the outside of the wiring harness. Over the years the tape my have come off allowing this wire to hang.

Response From dragtime92

all i get is a single click until i try turning the ignition again there is also a red wire that i couldn't seem to find wear it went but i no its a constant 12v wire and the green one will turn the starter over cranking the motor

Response From DanD

Not sure what to tell you without seeing this, in person; but here’s a couple of diagrams that may help?

Response From dragtime92

thanxs and another question i pulled off the main harness switch and there are a bunch of connectors but there is a bunch of black grease type stuff its really sticky to and its laying over theses connectors could this have any effect on the conection

Response From DanD

Not sure what you mean by “main switch” but that black stuff is either old die-electric grease to help keep the connection good or it’s a form of insulating tar to keep Mother Nature out of the connection; either way it is suppose to be there.

and i believe this is a 87 jeep Comanche not 86 are they they same in wiring and this green wire runs to the starter either im following the wrong wire or keep mixing them up

Response From DanD

If my diagrams are correct; they almost look the same?

Dan.

Response From dragtime92

hmmmmm... looked under truck at the starter too... notices a bare wire there was a coating over it... bare in a spot what would this mean both terminals wee touched one day by someone sittin on my hood and started smoking....

Response From Hammer Time

Go to that bare wire and give it a tug. If it stretches, that means it's a melted fusible link that will have to be replaced. They act as fuses for problems like that.

If you replace it, make sure you only use fuse wire and not regular wire.

Response From DanD

There's two different treads going for this same vehicle; sorry but i'm backing away and letting you guys have at it.

Man I’ve been in the trade working on peoples vehicles and listening to their description of what’s happening with their vehicles, for over thirty years. You my friend; have just joined the select few that have me completely confused, as to what you’re trying to say. LOL
Now don’t take offence; but you are doing to have to go into a little more detail if you still want our help. Remember we can’t see what you’re seeing and there are a lot of different wires under the hood of any vehicle.
The person sitting on your hood smoking; are they OK. LOL

Dan.

Response From dragtime92

ok well ill just start from the very beginning of the story one day a buddy of mine was sitting on my hood
of the truck. then smoke came rolling out from underneath the truck which im guess that the hood was
touching the batt terminals. my guessing is that he fried a couple of wires or something would you have any
guess on what happened???

When you turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump hum for 2 seconds and then turn off. That is the best place to start. Let us know.
