jJeep Wrangler low oil pressure

Showing 8 out of 8 Posts
Question From coolcat2020 on jJeep Wrangler low oil pressure

I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler with a 2.5 4cylinder motor with 135,000 miles. The compression on all cylinders was aroun 90-100 so I had the head rebuilt and the head surfaced. While doing this found the rings were also bad. I then put a new crank kit new pistons and rings, new oil pump, checked cam for size and it was ok, new cam bearings were installed by a reputable machine shop, the manifold was cracked so I replaced that with a new one. When the Jeep gets warm the oil pressure dropped to zero at idle, runs 40-50 psi when at travelling speed, I replaced the oil pump again, that didn't help.

Response From zmame

Did you or the machine shop put the crank in.. When you installed the crank did you use plastgauge to make sure the clearances where in spec.. You have to be loosing oil pressure somewhere.
Also is the pressure higher cold then hot?.
Is this on dummy gauge or actual mechancal gauge?

Response From coolcat2020

the macjhine shop replaced the cam, I am sure they used plastigauge, it only looses pressure when the engine warms up and is at an idle

Response From Hammer Time

He asks about a crank and you respond about a cam...................

Response From coolcat2020

Forgive me, I meant crank

Response From zmame

So did you install the cam or the crank?

Response From coolcat2020

I installed the cam, but the shop installed the cam bearings and miced the cam for me

Response From zmame Top Rated Answer

Lack of lubrication is one of the most common causes of camshaft failure during the initial start-up. If the camshaft and other valve train components are not properly pre-lubricated, they can be damaged within the first few camshaft revolutions. Very clean when building always keep your work area clean and all your components must be cleaned %100. DO NOT let it idle. It is essential to run the engine at 1500-2000 RPM for at least 20 minutes.

You will have to disassemble and see what has failed.

Engine Oil Pressure

Question From J Charlie Carr on Engine Oil Pressure

Jeep Wrangler 6 cy automatic oil pressure gauge light comes on when idling after engine water temp warms up. When cold the oil pressure is 55 and holds to 40+ while driving. When water temp builds to 210 degrees, and brought to idle, the light gauge comes on. After stopped at idle and return to driving, building speed back to 30 mph the light gauge goes off. Had the sensor changed and a new oil pump but the problem remains. Mystifying!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The top answer if the pressures are correct is engine bearings (bad news) are worn beyond specs. Usually the beginning of the end for that engine................ But..............

A couple other things could do this if pressure is accurate and should be checked with a gauge on engine not dash gauge.

1. Gasoline getting in oil can thin it out way too much and do that. Not good new if that either.
2. Totally wrong viscosity oil and of substandard oil way overdue too many times for changing it.

Verify it mechanically. If just common and worn to this point some fake junk can buy some time. If real it's in the fast lane to more and more problems till it croaks on you,

T

Response From J Charlie Carr

Engine oil pressure has been checked to hold at 9 lbs pressure when in idle

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Engine oil pressure has been checked to hold at 9 lbs pressure when in idle

Is that when the light is on?

Spec is 13 psi at idle. What year and how many miles? Any recent engine work done besides an oil pump? Engine overheated or ran without oil at any time?

Response From J Charlie Carr

Engine did over heat last summer. Mileage is 115,000. No other major engine repairs.

Response From Hammer Time

You might want tom try a different brand of oil and different brand of filter.

HELP! Issues with 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

Question From stins19 on HELP! Issues with 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited v8 Engine. Around 189,000 miles. Problems that I am having with it:

Engine makes constant ticking sound. Looks to be leaking antifreeze. Replaced water pump about a year ago. Check gauges light keeps coming on when oil pressure needle is on zero. Goes off after pressure needle rises. Noticed last week when I was driving that the needle had gone past the halfway point on the temperature gauge. A week ago, was driving on expressway and went to slowly brake. Vehicle rocked back and forth for a minute or two. How much damage to the car and wallet am I looking at for these problems? Any responses are greatly appreciated. Also, when going to accelerate, car revs up and then kicks into gear.

Thanks in advance!

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Nobody can give you any prices when you haven't even figured out what the problem is yet. You have more than one issue that will have to be tackled one at a time. Pressure test the cooling system to determine what your coolant leak is and repair it. Next you will have to get the oil pressure problem diagnosed. You may have a weak oil pump or other issues like a sludged up engine.

Question From highlander93 on jeep 4.0 wont run

we have a jeep cherokee, year 2000 ,4.0 automatic transmmision. ok we just recently rebuilt entire engine ,new pistons ,main and rod bearings ,oil pump, timing chain, cam lifters ,everthing..truck started right up ,ran great, drove for about 4 weeks ,devloped and oil leak in the rear of the engine,,thought it was the soft plugh on the cam ,so we pulled the tranny ,changed the soft plug ,put it back together, started it up still had an oil leak .so we pulled the pan .changed the rear main seal ,,,doesnt seem to leak except now it wont run!!!!!!!,this it what we have changed, crank position sensor, cam position sensor, coil rail, pcm unit,,,,took the tranny back out cleaned the ring on the flexplate ,put back together ,still same problem ,,,engine starts for about 5 seconds ,then quits, try to re start and it bucks and acts like the timing is way off ...i am stumpped...please jeep world help...this is my sons truck ,we have a fortune in it ,,,its lifted 9 inches ,has 35 s tires ,long arms everything a boys toy should have ,we would really like to get it running good again so he can enjoy it again,,,please thankyou

Response From Hammer Time

Make sure you don't have a security light on or flashing when this happens.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Response From highlander93 Top Rated Answer

really.we have checked al the vitals ,,,its has all ..it starts and then quits ,then will not restart ,when its tried ,its spits back threw the trottle plate ,like the timing is off ,but we know it not the motor ran great for a month

Response From Hammer Time

really.we have checked al the vitals ,,,its has all

Now, if that were true, your truck would be running and you wouldn't be here. It may be all there initially but something is dropping out and that's what you need to find out.
