2000 dodge neon oil pan trouble

Showing 7 out of 7 Posts
Question From dodg3n3on on 2000 dodge neon oil pan trouble

I have 2000 dodge neon and the oil plug leaks due to brittle cast aluminum threads stripped. I want go back with a steel pan and have one off a 96 . Just want know if this will fit and work fine.

Response From Hammer Time

You could also install a heli-coil to repair the threads in the one you have.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just curios - how did this problem happen? Never overtighten item like that for starters,

Response From nickwarner

Please tell me you don't get oil changes at WalMart.

Response From dodg3n3on

Yeah thats where i been getting it changed lol. And this last oil change they said they couldnt change it again until i got a new pan. They need turn the psi down on those tools or something. Guess its what i get trying save money . May have go back changing oil myself.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

I'm not alive to bash any place but know that any super price cutting place is also price cutting the skills of their employees and that scares me!

If you know your sh*t with this stuff even basic maintenance you have years of experience and or full blown training and the fast and quickie places don't! AYOR and can be expensive! Uncounted corrections for such places even cross threading stupid drain plugs!

T

Response From Discretesignals

I would say that is a no. You have nothing to bolt the transaxle lateral brace to with the steel pan. You can get the Dorman oil pan for around $60 bucks.

Can't Open My Oil Pan Drain PLug!?

Showing 3 out of 6 Posts | Show 3 Hidden Posts
Question From Jwiz88 on Can't Open My Oil Pan Drain PLug!?

Well I searched a lot on Google, but I can't seem to find how to open my oil pan drain plug. I own a 2001 Dodge Stratus and I need to do an oil change but I can't figure out how to get the damn oil pan drain plug open. It says on the bolt that it is metric but I have used every metric and non-metric socket I can find and none of them seem to fit it right. A 13mm is just a little to small (almost fits but not quite), and 14mm is to large to get a slug fit. I don't know what the problem is. I was thinking maybe a star bit or something similar might be the answer the my problem but I don't want to go and dish out the money for a socket bit that might not even fit. If anyone can help me in figuring out how to bust my nut I would appreciate it. ;) ty much.

Response From Jeff Norfolk

Try a 1/2 wrench or socket. That is the correct size. My advise is to have someone do it for you. This is the basic of basic DIY. If you are having trouble just fix it with your wallet and pay someone to do it.

Response From Jwiz88

Jeff:

That was the first thing I tried was using a 1/2 in socket. It was a cheaper socket set and didn't fit the nut quite right but I gave it hell and ended up breaking the socket bit... And a 1/2 wrench doesn't fit the nut, just a little too small. I got right up close to the nut and it says "metric D" right on it but like I said, no normal metric socket bits will fit it. I was thinking maybe a special metric bit like a star bit would work. Any advise?

Response From Sidom

Some of the cheap sets don't fit as well as a Snap on or similar quality set. I've had some plugs where obviously the guy who put it on figured the tighter the better.......

If the 13 won't quite go on, then the plug is probably rounded due to wear. Best bet would be to get a 1/2 drive 13mm, tap the socket all the way on with a hammer & use a breaker bar and then replace the plug...

If you've already got it off.............then..... nevermind......

Response From Jeff Norfolk Top Rated Answer

If you broke a socket....even a cheap one, you may have more problems then just not having the correct tools for the job. My advise is the same as above. Fix it with your wallet, take it in some place.

Response From hardliquor

...well you gotta start somewhere and I remember not knowing crap about cars...I still don't know a lot, but each little thing you do builds on itself.

Oil change is pretty hard to mess up. Just don't overtighten the drain bolt when you put it back in, don't overtighten the filter, and put in the correct amount of oil. And make sure you take your old oil to a recycling spot. Don't dump it on the ground or in a storm drain.

You might consider having a friend help you out.

Question From teri on flywheel help

I replaced a engine on my 05 dodge Durango 4.7l, with a 05 dodge ram 1500 4.7, but engine wont turn over I replaced the starter with ram 1500 starter while I have it torn apart do I need to replace the flywheel also with a dodge ram flywheel . I really need help on this one.

Response From Discretesignals

Which transmission did the Ram have? Is the Ram 4wd or 2wd? Is the Durango 4wd or 2wd? Did you compare the flywheels to be sure they are the same? They should be, of course.

When you mean turn over, do you mean the starter isn't activating or the starter is activated, but doesn't spin the crank?

I don't think the starter from the Ram will work on the Durango because it is bolted to the passenger side on the Durango and on the driver's side on the Ram and they both have different drive gears.

Durango starter clocking and gear:

Ram 1500 Auto starter:

Response From teri

Update-e advices -- I wish to thank all for their in put it was helpful , I was finally informed there is no way for that engine to work since the starters are opposite sides so I have to return it and request one for the durnago. Again thanks or your help

Response From teri

thanks for the help to answer your question they are both 2WD, and the starter activates but dosen"t spin the crank. The clerk at the part store recommended I put on the ram starter since I am in putting the ram eng. I hope he is right

Response From Discretesignals

I have a feeling the Ram's starter on the Durrango isn't going to work.

Response From teri Top Rated Answer

I need help with this problem as I stated before replaced an engine in a 05 dodge Durango with a 05 dodge ram 1500 same engine 4.7 all that was changed was the oil pan a suction pump and bolted to the trans ok now the starter activates but wont turn engine over tried switching starter from Durango to dodge ram it wont fit. hot battery and new starter applied

Response From kev2

you installed the 05 ram engine did the starter come with the engine?
you have NOT switched flywheels have you?

hopefully replacement engine was NOT a junk yard find-
I would confirm the dodge ram is what it was claimed to be- year model etc...

Response From teri

the dodge ram engine was purchases used on line they confirmed the year, model etc. it didn't come with a starter, I am using my old flywheel since it didn't come with one

Response From nickwarner

Before you play musical starters, have you tried putting a breaker bar on the crank pulley and seeing if this engine is locked up? Online can be a great place for deals but its also a great place for scammers to unload junk on people and take their money.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

So right Mr. Nick. Seller confirmed the thing so it must be right. Guess not huh?

T

Response From Discretesignals

Just curious, but what happened to the original engine? Did you have the same issue with the starter on the old engine?

Response From teri

the starter worked fine in old engine
