buffing out headlights

Showing 6 out of 6 Posts
Question From pantherman on buffing out headlights

I had a friend go to college for fabrication and customization at wyotech and one day he noticed my blue headlight housing on my car where cloudy and he simply grabbed a his mini sander and sanded or buffed out the cloudiness. Come to find out u dont need to go buy new headlights for the clouding problem...My questions if anyone knows is what bit count did he use, can I just use a sanding block or do I need a sander?

Response From Hammer Time

There are numerous kits and services out there for that purpose. Buffing is actually the harder way of bringing the clarity back. They have chemicals now that when painted on, brings back clarity. In my area there are people that will come out and do it at your location for $40 to $50 for both lights. Looks like brand new. Just Google Headlamp restoration and you will find all kinds.

Response From Jeff Norfolk

Here is a tip I have used a lot.......It sounds stupid but it works. Deep woods off with deet and a terry towel. Don't get it on your paint. It works like a champ!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

When I can I want some broken junk ones to see what works best. I literally don't own a vehicle that doesn't have sealed glass beam headlights but that problem with the plastic ones is so common it's nuts.

IDK: Bought a Meguirs product just for that that plain didn't work! I like their products in general and it may have been just that one car. Think it's named "GlassX" or similar.

More: I should own stock in them. Amazing what real WD-40 can do sometimes and so far it doesn't hurt anything. Hard to find the info but it's mostly fish oil!

Off the exact topic: Turtle wax tire shine for about anything black - underhood and all is proving to me to be one of the best. It doesn't just wash off fast like others that work well too.........

An old military stand-by Brasso. Will not scratch brass, ans will remove haze from the lens.

Alternator Issue?

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From GUYPOWERUP on Alternator Issue?

Yikes! Symptoms- Static on A.M. radio, Headlights have "strobe effect",battery reads 11.4 volts. Replaced alternator, checked cable connections,Replaced belt tensioner,Checked all mini fuses. 2000 Ford F250,5.4L Triton,2 wheel drive, no a.c. Owners manual does not specify a fuse for the alternator in terms that I can understand. Was having problem with dome light staying on during damp weather - Ford dealer and two independent shops could not find problem with dome light situation. I Love and Miss my old truck! Can someone help me fix her?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

What was going on before the alternator replacement?

Truck may think door is open by switch at door jam or in latch on doors. Also the delay for interior light turning off could be faulty.

This may be a body control module problem. See what the guys say on that. In the mean time make certain all battery cable connections are clean and snug all the way to the starter and engine block. Don't forget block to body straps. Leave neg at battery disconnected while checking and cleaning all others. First off, last back on,

T

Ps: They sell "memory savers" that you put in power port/lighter" to save items stored in radio and other throughout while battery is disconnected. A good idea to always use those........

Hot Wired Nissan Pick

Question From Frontier1 on Hot Wired Nissan Pick

I lost my keys while while walking a Trout stream in a remote area of Wisconsin. No cell phone service and no one home at the nearest farms 2 miles in either direction, and no spare keys.
My Nissan Pick Up is a 2001 Frontier XE with small 4 cyl. engine and over a 100K miles on the truck. No cruise control No tilt wheel just a basic truck.
I worked my way into the cab and removed the left side of the ignition wiring harness and was able to start the engine by inserting a screwdriver and giving it a turn. Then the steering wheel locked in position and I DESTROYED the streering wheel locking device / ignition with a screwdriver and an old pair of vise grips. I bought a replacement steering wheel locking device / ignition from the Nissan dealer at a reasonable price and am ready to install.
The screwdriver in the ignition wiring harness worked fine for a couple days, however at this point there is NO POWER to the ignition. Headlights OK, Horn OK, Brake lights OK, dash lights OK. No power to the ignition, wipers, fan,or radio.
All fuses OK at the dash and under the hood. At least the truck is home in the garage, but I would like to get it running again. Can anyone help???

Response From Discretesignals

Did you use a volt meter and check for power to the ignition switch on the green wire. Should see battery voltage on that wire all the time?

Does this have an aftermarket alarm system or remote start installed?

Response From Frontier1

No after market alarm, no remote start, no bells or whistles. I will try the volt meter in the morning. There is a RELAY in the secondary fuse box under the hood marked Anti Theft H/lamp, I don't what that is but I have a feeling that relay has something to do with the power being cut off before it reaches the ignition. Thanks for the help, I will get back to you as things progress.

Response From Discretesignals

Power for those items don't go directly through the ignition switch. The ignition switch is used to turn on an ignition relay in the fuse box that allows power to go to those things. Just have to systematically diagnose this to find out what is going on, starting out by checking for power to the switch first.

Response From Frontier1 Top Rated Answer

After installing all the new parts I still had no power at the steering wheel ignition. I went back to the fuse box under the hood and found a MINI-FEMALE TERMINAL 40 Amp fuse that was blown. I did not recognize this as a fuse due to its unusual shape. $2.39 @ Pep Boys and Zoom-Zoom. Thanks for the help.

Response From Discretesignals

The circuit may have shorted to something under the dash when you were ripping the column apart. Thanks for the follow up

Issues With Starting And Keeping Car Running

Question From Jmills3191 on Issues With Starting And Keeping Car Running

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a 4 cylinder engine. Recently my headlight multi-function switch went out, so my dash lights and running lights stayed on. This happened overnight, without a good reason. I'm waiting on payday to get the part, so for the time being I have been unplugging the positive battery cable when the vehicle will not be in use for more than a few hours. This is not my big problem however. Today after dropping my fiance off at home, I was attempting to leave my driveway, but apparently my car had other plans. It died on me, and would not restart. I was thinking maybe my new battery terminal had made a hole into the hood's insulation and grounded out. I checked some of the fuses and one of my engine fuses, as well as my A/C fuses were blown (Both are 20A mini fuses). I replaced the engine fuse and the car started. I went inside to tell my fiance I was leaving and when I came back out, the car had blown the fuse and cut the engine off again. I pulled fuses from other places to replace the engine fuse for troubleshooting, but have had no luck. I am yet to completely replace all the fuses with the corresponding Amped fuses. Any ideas on what could be causing this issue? Hopefully it;s nothing to big. Is there a major underlying issue that I should check out? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Response From Hammer Time

You have an electrical overload/short on that circuit and someone with electrical knowledge is going to have to locate the cause.

Response From Jmills3191 Top Rated Answer

I replaced all my fuses and removed my multi-control switch. I tried jumping my car, but could not get enough juice to the battery to jump it. Possibly have fried my battery?

Response From Hammer Time

That wouldn't blow a fuse but it should be tested anyway and replaced if it's bad.
