Question From DjERA on Fuel Pump

Year of vehicle: 1997
Make of vehicle saturn
Model of vehicle SW
Engine size 1.9
Mileage/Kilometers unknown

Im trying to change the fuel pump, is it very difficult?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Djera; The electric fuel pump is inside the gas tank. The tank must be removed from the vehicle for access. Free advise: Replace only with factory Saturn pump. Failure rate for aftermarket pumps is VERY high. Also, replace the fuel filter at the same time, as a restricted filter can cause pump failure.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

thanks, everything was changed... even the injectors

Question From saturn on 1995 saturn sc1

Saturn is hard to start but gets started after a while. Just changed fuel pump and filter. What could it be?

Response From flgmtech1

Has the fuel pressure regulator been inspected?

Response From Guest

no

Response From flgmtech1 Top Rated Answer

I would recommend inspceting that first to see if the issue is a fuel bleed down in the rail when sitting due to failure of the regulator

Question From guy580 on 99 saturn shuts off while driving

1999
Saturn
SL
110,000 miles
It has happened three times in the last week. While driving at highway speeds for about 20-30 min, the engine just shuts off. It starts up again but one time could only get about 10 mph until it was shut off for a while. I had the fuel pump checked and they said it had good pressure. They also said that the fuel filter wouldn't make the car shut off. Any suggestions?

Response From Hammer Time

Unless they tested that fuel pressure during the failure, it doesn't mean anything. These tests have to be done at the exact moment the problem is occuring. I know this may seem inconvenient but it's the way it has to be done to find the problem.

Response From guy580 Top Rated Answer

So do you think it could possibly be the fuel pump or could it be an electrical issue?

Response From Sidom

Guy, like HT said with out a little bit of info it's tough to even guess.... Saturns are pretty good cars so there isn't a lot of pattern failures...

At the minimum you need to find out if you are losing spark or fuel to narrow down the field.....

While this isn't an exact test, normally when you lose fuel the engine will chug & sputter a little before shutting off. When it's an electrical problem, the engine just dies like you turned the key off, it just shuts off.......Thats not 100% but can point you in the right direction.....

Response From guy580

Thats why I asked about electrical problem. There was no chugging or sputtering, just shutdown. How is it tested if it only happens after being driven around for 20-30 minutes?

Response From Sidom

unfortunately those can be tough to diag and requires specialized equipment if you want to be as sure as possible to what the problem is....

If it always starts back up, you have to hook up & see what you're losing on the road....

I don't like guessing..........For this problem I would definitely be looking at the crank sensor on one trace........

Response From guy580

So I should leave it at the mechanic and have him drive it around for a couple days until it happens. Will they have gauges hooked up whil they drive it?

Response From Sidom

Every shop has there own routine for finding problems... But if it's an intermittent, then it's very possible they will need it for a few days. Yes more than likely they will have some type of equipment hooked up to it while they're driving it, it's the only way to see what you are losing.

I'll have to reread this post but I don't remember if there was any codes posted or not. A lot of times if it's a comp sensor or circuit fails and kills the engine it will set a code even if it doesn't turn the light on after the restart. That is a big help in tracking the problem down.

Sometimes there are no codes and then you're down to monitering as many ciruits as your equipment will allow and hope you've picked the right ones. It can be time consuming and get expensive. It can get frustrating for the customer and tech but with no other "clues" it's kinda what you are left with........

Response From Hammer Time

I don't think anything. As I told you, it has to be tested and until that is done, no one is going to have any idea what is happening.

2003 Saturn Vue Stalling and Dying

Question From Tyler13B on 2003 Saturn Vue Stalling and Dying

2003 Saturn Vue
V6 3.0L FWD
112,700miles. Hello, my name is Tyler. I've had problems with the vehicle listed above stalling and dying while driving down the road. If I put it in Neutral and turn the key it will start back up and I can continue to drive until it dies again, sometimes a few miles down the road, and other times it wont happen for a few days. I've replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump. This morning I actually drove it out of the dealership from having the fuel pump replaced and it died while I was on the way home. I'm certain the fuel system isn't the problem and I'm beginning to think its electrical. I only paid $500 for it so its still worth fixing. its in great shape, this is the only problem it has. It starting stalling on my grandpa and he sold it to me since I was driving a car older than I am. I appreciate any advice.

Response From GC

Why was the fuel pump replaced? Was it replaced because of this issue or a different problem?

Will it stall sitting and idling or only when driving?

Odds are good that this will require a high end scan tool and experience with driveability issues to get this sorted, but will help as much as possible.

Response From Tyler13B

We had it diagnosed and the code for the fuel pump came up. I replaced it thinking it was the fuel pump going out causing it to stall and die. But now the check engine light isnt on and its still stalling out on me. It will stall while idling and while driving. But always starts right back up.

Response From GC

What code NUMBER was found before pump was replaced?

Response From Tyler13B

P0171 I do believe

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

There is no code that tells you that you have a bad fuel pump or any other component for that matter. Codes merely recognize a specific situation that the tech needs to determine the cause of.

You had a lean code. All that code means is that the computer has reached it's adaptive limits to correct a lean issue. that's very rarely caused by a bad fuel pump. The first thing to look for is a vacuum or intake snorkel leak.

Saturn won't start like its starved for fuel.

Question From baffled on Saturn won't start like its starved for fuel.

I CHANGEDD OUT THE MODULE FROM THE IN-TANK FUEL PUMP IN MY 1997 SATURN SL2. AS SOON AS i GOT EVERYTHING BOLTED BACK TOGETHER i STARTED THE CAR NO PROBLEM AND DROVE HOME FROM MY FRIENDS WHERE I DID THE WORK. THE CAR SAT FOR ONE DAY AND WHEN I WENT TO START IT IT WOULDN'T START LIKE ITS BEING STARVED FOR FUEL. BUT WHEN I PULLED THE IN-LINE FUEL FILTER AND TURNED THE KEY IT SPIT OUT ALL KINDS OF GAS. ANY IDEAS WHY MY SATURN WONT START? AND/OR WHAT TO DO?
I checked the fuel pump fuse, Fuse was good.
Pulled in-line fuel filter to see if new module was working. it was.
Disconnected the battery to hopefully reset the computer. That did not work

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Fuel pressure must be up to spec not just volume,

T

Response From baffled Top Rated Answer

SO HOW DO I GET THE PRESSURE UP? DOES THE SYSTEM NEED TO BE CHARGED OR SOMETHING?

Response From Hammer Time

You need to start using a fuel pressure gauge to determine if you have a fuel problem or not. You can't simply rely on visual for that.
