I have a 1991 GMC Jimmy that I need to put a new starter on. My question is will it drop straight down or do I need to remove the crossover exhaust pipe or jack the motor up a little. It is a 4.3 v6 4 wheel drive 2 door vehicle. I have been both by friends and was just wondering if anyone knows for sure before I start. Thanks Chip

It will come out with out removing exhaust. It takes a bit of fanagiling but it will come out.

Just a side not: Be sure to disconnect the battery before you start the job.

1984 GMC Pickup backfires when i left off the gas on the freeway. Even in my driveway the pickup backfire when i rev it up. It backfires so bad that my catalitic converter blew.

The truck backfired and blew the catalitic converter and the muffler expanded them. The sound that the truck makes is that of a canon going off. On the freeway, when I let go of the gas you can hear a big boom and feel like a big firecracker just blew under your ass.

if you have a large enough exhaust leak it will back fire

Start with a compression test across the board. If it is low on all cylinders, check the timing chain to see if it jumped or has excessive slack in it. If your vehicle has an air pump and it is operational, make sure the solenoid is diverting the air in closed loop. If it is sending the air downstream you will have the makings for heavy combustion in the converter. One way to check this is to pinch off the hose at the air pump that goes to the converter and drive the truck. If the backfire stops, you know which system has failed. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

I cannot find, after exhaustive searching, the EST connector, on my 95 GMC 7.4L, in order to check the timing, can I jump the ADL link, instead, if so, which pins, Thank You.

Put the IC system in the bypass mode by disconnecting the "set timing" connector. This is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead. This connector breaks out of the wiring harness below the heater case in the passenger compartment.

Base timing is 4 degrees BTDC.

Jumping the ALDL won't put the ignition control module into base mode.

I have a 2000 gmc jimmy that wants to start sometimes and others it wont. When it is running it idles and drives fine untill about 55mph. I did a solid tune up so cap rotor, pcv, airflow sensor. fuel pump seems to be working fine but i lose power and can hear the engine missing at about 55, HELP...

Check it for restriction in the exhaust and test the fuel pressure.

Hi. I have a '91 GMC 1500 w/5.7 It starts no problem, but when excellerating it will pop, like a back fire, then runs like it fouled a plug. I've changed the injecters in the TBI, checked vacuum lines, tested the EGR valve the old fassioned way...rev the motor and see if the diaphram moves. Plugs are new. Good wires...etc. Any idea? It almost seems like vacuum advance isn't funtioning properly, but not sure how to check.

Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure, but thinking intake. It's more of a sputter, pop, like it wants to die thing.

It might be a lean back fire on acceleration. Have you watched your fuel pressure when you accelerate to see if it drops out from lack of volume?

If you have a scan tool or volt meter, you can watch the O2 sensor voltage with the O2 hot and working. The voltage should peg at .9 volts (rich), when you get on it. If the O2 voltage doesn't peg, you don't have enough fuel getting into the combustion chambers.

You could have an ignition problem, but most the time ignition problems cause a backfire out the exhaust.

Another possibility is a leaking intake or exhaust valve under high pressure. Pressure in the cylinders is really high under WOT (wide open throttle) acceleration.

It only does it while driving, not while in neutral, so I don't know if I can test the O2 censor. I do hear a ticking. Sounds like a valve or lifter. I thought it was the header leaking, but thinking the former now. Thanks for the help and for spelling acceleration. I thought I was spelling that wrong.
