1991 Mazda Truck, Strange Wheel Noise

Question From CosmicSunset on 1991 Mazda Truck, Strange Wheel Noise

I have a 1991 Mazda B2600i with 160k miles. Over the past few years, occasionally after the steering had been turned to its limit (only to the left I think) and then straightened out again there is a nasty sound coming from the front right wheel area. It sounds like metal on metal scraping and is just a short screech that seems to be happening once per revolution of the wheel. As I speed up the screeching gets faster and decreases in volume until it's gone. It usually goes away after I've driven only about a hundred feet, sometimes as little as two or three wheel revolutions.

Recently there have been a couple times when the sound occurs while braking and today there was one instance of the sound beginning during a left turn, before I'd even straightened the wheel. The sound comes and goes and sometimes I won't hear it for quite a while. It seems more likely to happen again if it's happened recently and the harder the turn the more likely the sound is to come back.

I took the wheel off to inspect things. There were no grooves or scratches on the wheel, the brake was mounted securely, the brake rotor does not appear warped, the pads are fairly new, and I was unable to find any resistance or reproduce the sound by manually spinning the part the wheel bolts to (not sure what that's called, a wheel hub perhaps).

Can anyone identify what might be causing this sound?

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Kris

Response From nickwarner

check for play in the bearings. With the wheel bolted on, grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to push in and out, wiggling the tire vertically. If you have anything other that a tight wheel you need to replace the bearing. A loose bearing can allow the rotor to slightly contact the steel dust shield behind it. Makes a nasty sound even with the slightest contact, like a kid running his nails on a chalkboard. Only takes a slight contact.

Response From CosmicSunset

It appears that there is some play in the bearings. I'll look into replacing them. Thank you so much for your advice!

no problem

Response From Hammer Time

If you have marks on the wheel, then you have a serious and dangerous problem and the car shouldn't be driven until the problem is found and resolve. All the front suspension and wheel bearings need to be inspected carefully by a professional.
