2007 Ford Fusion Rear Brake Rotors

Question From mikercfly on 2007 Ford Fusion Rear Brake Rotors

I have a 2007 Ford Fusion. Original rear and front rotors have two mounting screws to mount it to the hub. The new rotors also have the same two mounting holes but only one hole lines up with the hub screw locations on the rear. The front rotors all line up perfectly. Can I get away with using just the one mounting screw to scure the rear rotor to the hub so I can get on with assembling the caliper with new pads? It appears that the rotor mounting screws are just so you can have the rotor scure while mounting the caliper with new pads. The wheel seems that it would be the main factor holding the rotor in place. What do you folks think?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Don't worry about it. You could get away with no mounting screws if you needed to. The lugnuts hold everything tightly together.

Response From mikercfly

Thanks Hammer!

Just wanting to make sure.

Question From jfl72170 on front suspencion

I have 2000 ford taurus with a 3.0 dohc. when I hit the brakes the front end shakes and wobbles. What could be wrong, warped rotors, ball joints or tie rods. Thanks in advance

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The root cause of your problem is distorted brake rotors so at the very least you need to replace the pads and both rotors. Along with inspecting the rest of the brake system, check all the tie rod ends closely because the hammering of the brake rotors tends to wear out tie rod ends which will exaggerate the brake pulsation.

Do I Really Need New Brake Rotors?

Question From gigirl on Do I Really Need New Brake Rotors?

02 Ford Explorer 4x4

Took for inspection said I need brake pads for it to pass. They said I need new rotors too (even though the ones I have still pass inspection)
So, do I need new rotors or not?

Was also told I have a broken rear coil spring and leaking strut. Not sure why the vehicle hasn't handled poorly with this problem but I guess I should replace it. Is this common on this vehicle. Seems like this vehicle has a lot of common problems?

Thanks for you input.

Response From Sidom

They need to give you a reason you need rotors.....Rotors have a minimum spec they can be machined to. If they will go below that spec when turned then you would need new ones, if not then they can be machined & reused.

That has frt shocks not struts. It's possible it just has a small leak, that you might not notice. One of the coils on the spring may have collapsed. Does the vehicle sit unevenly? (slightly from side to side)

Response From gigirl

The guy said the rotors would pass inspection, that's why I'm wondering if I really need them. If I do, then I want to make sure I get them, I mean they are brakes so I would like to be sure they're safe.

The "broken" coil and strut are in the rear and no it doesn't seem to sit crooked. It seems to handle ok.

I think I'll have it checked out by another garage and see what they have to say.

Response From Hammer Time

There could be different reasons for changing them. Simply meeting the minimum legal requirements might get you through inspection but that could still leave you with performance and noise issues in the brakes that just don't rise to the level of "unsafe"

Response From gigirl Top Rated Answer

Got a second opinion from a dealer who said I did NOT need rotors or a new strut. I did however, need brake pads and a new coil spring (which was broken all the way at the top) they said they never saw one like it. Anyway, all is taken care of now.

Response From Sidom

A 2nd opinion can't hurt..... I would be curious as to the reason for the rotors... Normally when suggesting parts there is usaully a reason for the suggestion.

While not required if one is serverly warp and will get close to min specs after machining, I could see suggesting one. Once a rotor gets warped there is a good chance the warpage will return even after machining so in that case it would be a better idea to put the money towards a new one....

Ford Econoline Braking Problem

Question From Guest on Ford Econoline Braking Problem

2001 Econoline xlt van....95K miles...steering wheel vibrates slightly when I apply the brakes and at times seems to 'pulsate' while braking as if ABS is being activated. Brake pads 35K old may be worn but no metal-to-metal sound. Did have one ball joint and tie rod replaced at 65K. Still on first set of tires - most highway driven.

Response From steve01832

If you step on the brake and you feel you could mix a cocktail on the dashboard, the rotors are warped. Never have a rotor machined, it only makes them thinner and they warp again twice as fast. Replace front pads and rotors. Make sure you adjust the rear brakes so the fronts aren't doing all the work. If the rear brakes aren't adjusted properly, the fronts do more than they should, the rotors overheat, warp, and you have another brake pulse.

Steve

Response From Guest

Thanks Steve.....but the rotors are fairly new. Had them both replaced at 65K miles along with a new ball joint and tie rod and front pads. The miles ( 95K ) are almost ALL highway!

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

The brake rotors likely need to be machined or replaced; due to rust deterioration or warpage.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The days of making rotors and drums thick enough to machine them seems gone. They feel fine right away but come back way to quickly with warpage, T
