Question From Guest on Ceramic brake pads

Hello all, I have a 1999 Ford Taurus that I am going to change the brake pads on. I was told that I should switch from semi-metallic to ceramic that they would last longer. Is there any truth to this.? I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Response From Hammer Time

I don't know about the claim of lasting longer for Ceramic pads. That hasn't been my experience but the major benefits are less noise, less brake dust on the wheel, good friction.

Response From Guest

Appreciate the info!

Wonder what ceramic pads would do on cyrogenic rotors? We did a test on the rotors and our pad life extended by approximately 1/3. The rotors did not warp and had absolutely no brake fade. We tried them on our hardest drivers and told them to tear them up.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

>>cyrogenic rotors<< Are those the ones that are frozen for 50 years, then brought back to life?

Real close

Response From Guest

Sounds like it's a good deal all the way around. Thanks, you all have alot of great information!

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Just to add to Tom's post; The premium ceramic pads are guaranteed to be quiet, no annoying brake dust on the wheels, last longer, and don't wear the rotors like the semi-metallic pads. They are a bit spendier than semi-metallic, but IMO, worth it.

Response From Guest

Thanks all for the info!

?? I have a set in a different vehicle. The claim is long lasting, and quiet. So far so good. There MAY be legal issues state to state about them so make sure they are up to the specs for the vehicle AND local rules,

Response From Guest

I certainly appreciate the info, and I probably will stick with semi-metallic since ceramic seems to be more of a bother. Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf

There many types that are going to do just fine. I just tried the "Centric" brand ceramics on one of my own (97 C/K Chev truck) - can't recall if costs were much different now but they worked fine. Any should fit in the same way.

There other brands I've liked over the years for brake parts. Bendix to name one other. Not sure of the brand but NAPA's top parts for brakes are excellent as well. I think they still make a pad that little to no "break" in period with tiny bumps on the surface that would dissappear with the first few stops and those stayed quiet too.

Many were guaranteed for life but that was a trick IMO - as they wanted them so worn down it bothered me to wait that long. Personally I like the feel and performance of the first 1/2 of pad's life NOT the last. They transfer of tolerate heat better and the piston(s) are further retracted into bores when newer or thicker too - a benefit!
