disc brake caliper removal

Question From revolver693 on disc brake caliper removal

Hi, I own a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a 3.1 liter V-6 with 77.000 miles. I understand this problem is not unique

Response From revolver693

The problem is in the right rear disc brake.

Response From Hammer Time

I suspect the problem is retracting the piston in the caliper.

It doesn't just push in. It has to be threaded in while applying pressure. They make a number of tools to help do this. Here are a couple of them.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Doesn't this also have a parking brake cable that's a DIY total PITA also?

T

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

It's time for the poster to elaborate on the problem some more. We can speculate all day. Until he helps a little, we are just spinning our wheels.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Revolver; Okay, the problem is in the RR caliper. There are two bolts that hold the caliper to the mount. Two bolts that hold the mount to the spindle. Both must be removed to remove the rotor. But, you still haven't told us what kind of problem you are having.

Response From Hammer Time

That doesn't help any. What are you trying to do and what is the problem?

Response From Hammer Time

Your going to have to explain a little better than that. What is it your trying to do?
Front or rear?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

You took the words right out of his mouth. Left him speechless!

1985 Olds 98 brake caliper sticking

Question From crpowell67 on 1985 Olds 98 brake caliper sticking

Year = 1985
Make = Oldsmobile
Model = Ninety Eight
Trim = Regency Brougham
Engine = 3.8L V6 OHV 12V
driveline = front-wheel drive

I have a problem with the front drivers side caliper sticking it will work itself free after sitting for a bit, I just replaced the caliper and brake pads and it still is doing the same thing. I am thinking maybe I have a line collapsing but am looking for other opinions of something that I might be overlooking. I locks up to where it will start smoking from the caliper/wheel area.

Response From Discretesignals

You might have a brake hose acting as a check valve and keeping pressure in the caliper from returning back to the master. Usually it is a good idea to replace the hoses when you replaced a caliper that was hanging.

Response From crpowell67 Top Rated Answer

Going to replace them On Friday (payday) and will keep you posted to whether it solves the problem or not.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

IMO high chance of a flex hose as DS suggested. If this is smoking hot now hope you can NOT drive it till Friday!

You can test for that by hitting brakes so they do pull or are stuck on that side. Hoist both fronts, feel the dragging then just a quick open of bleeder if it releases that hose is almost the certain problem.

Do yourself a favor on a 1985 and spray the flare nut connections to both (or any you find anywhere) with PB now and have a much better chance at those coming apart for you later without making up brake lines unless they stink too anyway.

If the car is worth a damn do the whole job, both sides equally,
