Remanufactured DENSO alternators go through a grueling process. Stators and rectifiers are tested to 300 volts, while rotors are submitted to 600 volts, all to ensure reliable performance. Rotor slip rings are buffed to an 8 micron surface finish, with runout limited to 20 microns, minimizing brush wear and abrasion. Bearings are validated to OE standards and loaded with premium OE standard lubricants. New or remanufactured, a DENSO alternator is a quality component. Offered in versions from 40 to 160 amperes and beyond for hundreds of specific vehicle applications, all alternators meet DENSO's rigorous First Time Fit standards. Contemporary cars employ dozens of sophisticated electronic systems from bumper to bumper, placing heavy demands on the charging system. The alternator is no place to cut corners. DENSO First Time Fit alternators meet or exceed all manufacturer standards, mount properly with a minimum of installation issues, and provide years of reliable service. Features. Premium cores and precise OE assembly benchmarks; Design to meet the grueling heat and electrical requirements; First Time Fit provides perfect mounting with no belt/pulley alignment issues; Benefits. Service professionals preferred DENSO's alternators for a trouble free solution; OE quality fit, appearance, and durability; Full compatibility with sensitive electronics systems; Compact and lightweight design

rough low RPM idle . . . alternator?

Question From mbrezin on rough low RPM idle . . . alternator?

2005 Subaru Forester, manual trans. I left a ceiling light on and the battery died over 8 days in airport parking. I got the car jumped. It started OK, but on the second try. Car seems to run OK, but frequently stalls out in low RPM. Alternator light is not on, but a friend tells me it's probably the alternator. Car ran fine up until battery death. Any thoughts on next steps? Thanks

???????????

Maybe it was a Savannah sparrow buzzing in my ear, but I did get motivated to check my battery and the test came back that it was pretty close to dead. I did buy a new one and after 5 miles or so of city driving the rough engine at low RPM was gone. Car drives fine now. Thanks for the advice!

Response From Hammer Time

No, the alternator is likely fine. The battery may have problems holding a charge if it was brought down that low. The stalling is due to the engine computer losing it's stored memory with the dead battery. It should relearn the idle strategy after a short period of normal driving. If it doesn't, try disconnecting the battery again and let it start over.

Response From mbrezin

Thanks very much. I have the original battery in the car so I think I'll replace that and then see if that makes the computer happy.

Bright lights working weird on '95 Subaru Legacy

Question From falluper on Bright lights working weird on '95 Subaru Legacy

There's actually a couple things happening with this ol' car, and maybe they're related. First, the interior light sometimes refuses to come on -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This has been going on for a few weeks. Then yesterday the bright lights started acting weird. They will work if I pull the switch towards me (in the position where you have to keep it held), but if I push the switch away (for them to stay on without me holding it) they do not come on at all. Does this scream "alternator problem"? I'm really hoping it doesn't!

Response From dave284 Top Rated Answer

NO, it screams bad switch and interior light bad button or bulb

Response From falluper

Ah, thanks for that reply. Now, being an intrepid sort but one who doesn't know a whole lot about cars, is the switch the kind of thing I can fix easily myself? Or should I leave it for the mechanic?

Response From dave284

If the site Jim gave don't help buy a haynes repair manual lots of step by step w/ illustrations personally I think you can do it but you have to rent a steering wheel puller both these items are at Autozone and if decide to diy post your progress will help on the steps you are unsure about

Response From Double J

Here is the steering wheel removal process....

Response From DrElectrics

Your interior light - Remove the globe, and squeeze the 2 metal contacts that held it a little closer. ONe at a time of course. This should increase the hold on the bulb when you put it back (should be hard to put back) that should help you. The lights thing is already taken care of.

Response From falluper

Hey, thanks all for the valuable info (although my mechanic's not going to thank you, I'm sure). I'm tackling it this weekend and will duly report back my progress. Cheers!

Distributor on Subaru snapped. Help!

Question From lozza on Distributor on Subaru snapped. Help!

Make SUBARU
Body Type SEDAN
Year 1986
Primary Colour SILVER
Kms 241,000

Bought the car second hand, and was informed that it was recently serviced and A1 mechanically. However not even 48hrs of owning it, i drove to the shop and then that was the end. The distributor has snapped, i don't know how or what would cause that, and because it was serviced late Jan which mentions supply and fit of a new alternator, wouldn't they have noticed an issue with the distributor? or do you think the prior owners sold the car knowing about the problems. (especially as i didn't get to see the repairs/service invoice that they had until after they left and was found in the car? Any thoughts would be much appreciated

Response From kev2

Caveat emptor -- old as Latin.

Well there is not much to do except have the technician try to determine the cause and replace the damaged component.
Sorry no money saving insight.

Response From nickwarner

A distributor failing like that would give no warning. It controls your spark, so when it fails the car is dead in the water. Nobody would have anything to notice before since it was fine up until it wasn't. Thats the downside of buying a car, especially an old one with a bunch of miles on it.

Wonder what is meant by snapped?

Response From nickwarner

Guessing the shaft inside it, but I don't know anymore than what was posted

Subaru forester vibrates on start up and while idling

Question From bluejaycreek on Subaru forester vibrates on start up and while idling

Hi, I have a 2002 Subaru forester, L series with 78,000 miles, that vibrates when you first start the vehicle and also while it is in drive and the brake is pressed. It only started doing this after I took my car in for inspection in September and paid 2000.00 for repairs. The main repairs they did were new struts and changed the belts. When I first picked it up and turned it on, the engine made a terrible noise that I had never heard before. I've taken it back to the mechanic and he said it was the new belt. He adjusted it and said drive it for awhile to see if it gets better. It's been 3000 miles and it still is the same. Anyone have any ideas what they did to cause this problem? The car drove smoothly the entire time I have owned it before these repairs were done. Thanks

Response From Discretesignals

Which belts were replaced?

Response From bluejaycreek Top Rated Answer

On the reciept here is what was replaced:
Alternator drive belt
A/c compressor drive belt
Axle shaft
Front strut assemblys

Response From Discretesignals

You should take it back there and explain the problem is still there. There is something they probably missed, damaged, or installed improperly.

Subaru issue

Question From Stbear on Subaru issue

2006
Subaru
TriBeCa

Hi. While driving home last night I had an issue with my vehicle. As I was driving I lost the power steering and my battery light came on with my rear differential temp and brake light. I did smell something burning but that went away and it wasn't that strong. The engine still ran and the transmission still worked. I had to get home as it was late and had no other option. As I got closer to home I lost more power to my engine and lost more lights inside and out. My lights got really dim and then my hazard lights stopped all together. I finally made it home safely but my truck died as I was trying to get it in my driv way. My boyfriend and I tried to jump it but it wouldn't turn over. We have checked the fuses and nothing is blown. Do you have any ideas?

Response From Discretesignals

Did you see if the drive belt is still there that drives the accessories? Probably laying on the side of the road somewhere...lol

Response From Stbear Top Rated Answer

It was a thought but I will look more into this. I was thinking it may have been the battery first but then maybe the alternator. Thank you for your input. I will come back and let you know what happens

Response From Discretesignals

If the belt isn't there that would explain your loss of power steering and your charging light coming on. Without the belt turning the alternator, the electrical system will rely on the battery for power. When the battery discharges all kind of electrical issues will occur before the engine dies. The engine dies because there is no electrical power or enough of it to run the ignition, computer, and electronic fuel injection.

If the belt is broken, there has to be a reason why. The belt could have broke because it was old and cracked. The belt could have burned up and broke from an accessory or pulley that locked up too. Cause and effect. Make sure you determine why the belt broke because you don't want to stick another on there and have the same thing occur again.

You should remove the battery and have it charged and tested because it is probably heavily discharged.

Your also lucky because the belt, if it is broken, doesn't drive the water pump. If it did, you would have overheated the engine and caused major damage.
