  • DENSO alternators are not only original equipment on many of the world's top production cars; they are a favorite in motorsports as well, where their light weight, high efficiency, and durability under the most demanding conditions make them the natural choice. Remanufactured DENSO alternators go through a grueling process. Stators and rectifiers are tested to 300 volts, while rotors are submitted to 600 volts, all to ensure reliable performance. Rotor slip rings are buffed to an 8 micron surface finish, with runout limited to 20 microns, minimizing brush wear and abrasion. Bearings are validated to OE standards and loaded with premium OE standard lubricants. New or remanufactured, a DENSO alternator is a quality component. Offered in versions from 40 to 160 amperes and beyond for hundreds of specific vehicle applications, all alternators meet DENSO's rigorous First Time Fit standards. Contemporary cars employ dozens of sophisticated electronic systems from bumper to bumper, placing heavy demands on the charging system. The alternator is no place to cut corners. DENSO First Time Fit alternators meet or exceed all manufacturer standards, mount properly with a minimum of installation issues, and provide years of reliable service. Features. Premium cores and precise OE assembly benchmarks; Design to meet the grueling heat and electrical requirements; First Time Fit provides perfect mounting with no belt/pulley alignment issues; Benefits. Service professionals preferred DENSO's alternators for a trouble free solution; OE quality fit, appearance, and durability; Full compatibility with sensitive electronics systems; Compact and lightweight design

Good chance the alternator is not putting out a charge. Good time to check the battery too,

2003 Ford Windstar: AC Compressor Too Big To Get Ou

Question From boru45 on 2003 Ford Windstar: AC Compressor Too Big To Get Ou

The AC compressor on my Windstar seized, ruining the serpentine belt . . . and now it's about to ruin me!

After much research, I found a refurbished compressor that comes with a warranty . . . and I thought I'd try to install it myself. I'm a fair mechanic, but nothing to write home about.

Anyway, after a shop drained the refrigerant, I started in on the compressor. On this van, it's attached to the front face of the engine, below the alternator, and it has very little room between the engine block and the front grill/radiator. Once I got it unbolted and disconnected, I had a bad surprise. The compressor is too large to remove going up or going down. I spent a good hour trying every angle, and found nothing: there is no way to remove it from the engine compartment without removing something else.

So that's my question: what might be the best thing to target for removal, if I'm looking for more space in-between the engine and the grill?

I looked at the radiator, and considered that -- but I won't proceed until I have expert input. Other candidates might be the manifold of pipes below the compressor -- and I'm just gone blank on what pipes these were. Exhaust?

So . . . any thoughts? I'd love to hear from anyone who can help!

TIA!

A/C is an entity unto itself. If compressor seized there's a high likelihood of system contamination and replacing it alone won't plain up and work. Most all warranties will be void if you don't do an accumulator at the same time. This should be a CCOT (clutch cycling Orifice Tube) system and the "O" tube if clogged - we call that "Black Death."

I'll find the link that's real helpful if you aren't too discouraged yet. This compressor is listed as in stock at NAPA - NEW and take the rebuilt back. They have such a high rate of failure you have to start over again!

Any mess found at "O" tube than system flush is required. You must measure what comes out for oil from old unit, put or know that much is in replacement plus an oz. Some condensers and this could be one won't flush well and will flush better if laid flat out of vehicle.

If no black death you take the gamble and it can work. You decide it's your $.

You MUST be able to hold a full vacuum for your altitude for at least 30 min and charge near exact known weight of refrigerant. Too much it will choke and too little it won't move oil and back to needing a compressor again.

This is why it's so expensive - can't overlook details or short cut.

To get the old one out very well may require taking lots out of the way. Some may get out thru a wheel well - dunno on this one. Before you disconnect you should have checked for leaks elsewhere in the system. If that was the root cause it will just happen again.

Stinks - hard work and know how to use equipment.

Here's a link for just "Charging Procedures" if everything was going well with replacements............

Rare to seize by clutch but could. Did just the clutch weld up on you?

You can do it but it's not real DIY friendly.

Take your time to do this right ONCE or it can be Pandora's box.

Good luck,

T

Here was the part shipped or at a local NAPA "NEW" others would have new also.............

Thanks for the long post. I apprediate all the warnings and tips, but I was just asking how to get it out. I know all the rest, down to the last detail . . . having watched a long video on the process.

So, anyway, I guess the next post said what I was looking for: how to get it out. Maybe someone will come along and confirm that the alternator needs to come off.

Thanks for the help!

Well, I guess you're a real expert now.......... Good luck with that .. You likely will be doing this job again..
Yes, the alternator has to be removed

I'm not sure why I would need to do it again. I'm just bypassing the failed compressor, using a working compressor instead of an AC bypass pulley.

Maybe I'm wrong, but a replacement compressor will spin just fine . . . and the system doesn't need to be charged or checked, because it won't be operational . . . other than as a pulley for the serpentine belt to spin on.

I've already bypassed the AC on a previous vehicle, but that one had a bypass pulley. Worked like a dream.

I don't see any mention of only using it just for an idler for belt routing in your previous post. If that's all your doing, fine. I wouldn't expect this system to work for any period of time in the end though.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

jesse - if all you wanted was a pulley there I wish you had said that first,

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Best I could find is alternator and brackets need to come out and likely brackets holding compressor then it can come out from the top.

Just notes: about 2/3rds of A/C not working is from a leak and subsequent low charge. Low charge will still operate but cycle more than needed at first and lack of lubrication takes out compressors. IMO 90% of compressors that seize could have been prevented when noise was heard the first time.

Hey - many vehicles are tight underhood and this is no exception. Tons of heat under there too - more than average IMO stresses things out,

T

Response From Sidom

I can't remember for sure but I believe the alternator & brackets have to come out on that one.

Tom has some very good points on how to go about this and what to do. Just stuffing a comp on this and you'll probably being doing this again rather shortly..... Hopefully you didn't add stop leak or any else but R134a to this system over the course of it's life and this isn't a case of black death. If it is.......everything in the system has to be changed or you will be dealing with premature failures for the rest of the vans life...

It there is a black, gooey, liquid type substance in there then that is a very bad sign.....

I need HLEP with my WINDSTAR

Question From no1halo on I need HLEP with my WINDSTAR

My 1998 Ford Windstar has just started shaking upon startup and also after idling a while. Is this enough information to give me some idea what the trouble might be?

I also have an old convertible I want to sell...Is there a place I can do that on here?

Response From way2old

Does the check engine light come on while the van is running? if it does take it to a major parts house and they will read the codes for free. If the codes are like a P0100 through P0306, a tune up is in order. Look down below this area and there are other forums in there to place your vehicle for sale. If you can't find where, just post the information and either another mod or myself will move it to the place we feel it needs to be.

Response From no1halo Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the quick response. A light flicks on briefly at startup but goes off fast. I am not even sure if it is check engine or alternator light it flashed off so fast.

Ok, I will gather the information on the car I have for sale and look for the proper place to post it. Thanks again.
I just found this place tonight and seems like a great place to get info. I don;t know much about cars and need to learn how to take care of my own car better.

Response From way2old

Well, welcome to our little place. Glad to have you here. We have fun here, but there are some really good automotive minds in here. The site pretty well covers everything from older cars (from some of our youthful days) to the latest technology in the industry. If you read some of the posts from the regulars, you will see what I am talking about. Again, on behalf of the other regulars, welcome to Carjunky. It becomes addictive here. See ya. way2old I am going to be away until late Sunday night. So someone else will jump in and help you if needed.

Response From no1halo

I submitted my car add in classifieds, but it is not showing, yet.

What should be included in a tune up?

Response From way2old

A complete tune up will include spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter. Possibly a bottle or two of fuel injector cleaner in the fuel tank will help the engine to run smoother. Let us know. You can search the web and find out how to change the items mentioned. These are easily replaced if you have some basic tools.

power window not working

Question From daw on power window not working

1998 ford windstar 198.000 6 cylinders 3.0 .... In 4/2011 I had the power window motor on passengers side replaced. A couple of months ago it quit again but after a few days it worked again. This happend a few times. This time it has not started working. Even the drivers side switch will not work it. I took the door panel off. There is no power going to the motor when I push the switch. Now I'll admit I try my best but not an expert at this. Also I do not have the $180 they charged before. I thank you for any help.

Response From Hammer Time

I can answer your question with 2 words...................... "Chinese Parts"

Response From meri343le

You are so right! I use couple of times shop name deleted Inc but I am very satisfied, Tony check every little detail and the parts are never Chinese!

Response From Hammer Time

Promote your shop somewhere else and if you think for one minute those aren't chinese parts, I have some swamp land for you too.

Sorry for that, I never meant to promote anything. I really apologize. I think I could help you, call me: personal info deleted, and we can arrange something... I really apologize again!

You really don't know when to quit man. Do you want everyone in the world that has a phone to call yours 24/7?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If so - Yup!

Check that master switch is alternating the wires from power to ground for up and down action. If not found may be wires in the door jam giving out with just the bending of opening and closing door(s) and at the miles guessing it gets opened and closed a lot but have found that with lower mile vehicles several times is the problem and not the motor itself,

T

Response From daw

thanks. i can't get to it right now but will let you know what i find out. thanks again

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It's fairly easy to check. If you find dead one it's hard to pull back the snorkel of wires but can check continuity by color of wire to inside wire. They can break inside insulation partly at first then totally and insulation may be intact. If you find this absolutely use fine stranded new wire if your way to repair meant to bend as not all wires need to bend of course so it's different wire.

Master switch an override other windows such that if a passenger is choosing up and you if driver choose down at the same time master wins
