I am thinking about attempting to replace the alternator in my 1984 Ford LTD. I have very little experience. Is this job something your average person can handle? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Also, can anyone recommend a replacement alternator/brand that would be good to use? It seems a bit confusing trying to find the right one.

I just had a look in my repair manual and it doesn’t list a removal procedure for this job. That usually means it’s quite obvious/simple has how it comes off.
That being said we don’t know your abilities or access too tools?
Then there’s always a chance of seized bolts, on an older vehicle. Break a bolt off and you won’t be a happy do it yourselfer.
As for who’s alternator to use; all I can say there, is go too one of the larger chain parts suppliers. Don’t buy the replacement only looking at the cost of the unit; check the warranty that goes with it. In my experience the longer the warranty, usually means a better unit.

Thanks for the advice Dan. It appears to be a job I can handle just from visually inspection. I have the Chilton's guide for this car too and it makes the procedure seem pretty straightforward. Wish me luck!

i dont know for your particular application for the t reg ford mondeo 2.0 l zetec. but from my experience when a bolt is longer then the space given, it usually takes alot of cursing and busted knuckles to find the right combination of angle and position of the alternator to take it out together. your not going to remove the bolt itself. your going to remove the alternator and bolt together at the same time. hence finding the right angle and positionong of the alternator.

Battery light came, few miles later car died, alternator bad... replaced alternator (voltage reg.) @ starter solenoid, still drawing power somewhere...runs till battery is drained. Pulled alternator, starter and battery...had tested. all tested good.

Tom's test doesn't much now. You have a new alternator and regulator so they are all one unit and under warranty.

Check for power on the yellow with white wire all the time and the light green with red when the key is on.

What worries me with these type parts if remanufactured is I've seen just cleaned up stuff - nice shiny finish but not really redone in full. Zero failures on new but of course you pay tons more but so do the failures,

That's entirely possible but we have to verify the correct inputs to the alternator before going after the parts house.

If at idle as Hammer suggested that isn't charging anything - just using up what is there till dead. If the grey voltage regulator external it should or may have marks to "ground here to test" with a voltmeter on battery would spike up volts - just do that quickly and not allow high voltage if it will.

See if pic shows.....

If not look for it. Plug end of YOUR harness could be the trouble - how does it look? Burnt? Was common on some - premade w solder fittings used to be available if so or messed up right there. Just a maybe for these,

I have a 2003 Ford Focus Se sedan with 97,000 miles and a 4cyl engine & automatic transmission. I have had the battery, alternator, & belt replaced on this vehicle because the engine light randomly comes on sometimes. Sometimes the alternator is overcharging the system, maybe causing the light. I had it at the Ford house yesterday and they spent all day trying to get the light to come on and trying to get it to do something abnormal. I think the new alternator quit the overcharging, but I can't seem to shake the light which is very annoying when it randomly comes on. Any ideas why or what could be done. Is there any fuse I can pull that will turn the light off? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have this exact same problem. Dealership can't find anything wrong. However, today was driving and my entire dash went dead. Something electrical definitely wrong on my 03 Focus. Waiting for a tow truck right now. Let me know if you found out what was wrong,

I'm having the same problem also. I was told that the computer regulates all charging. And it decides when the alternator is bad. When the red battery light comes on, it is an indicator, followed by the check engine light. I had my alternator bench tested and it showed 14.5v under a load. I was also told that the wire going from the starter to the alternator acts as a fuse. as long as it shows less than 5 ohms it is good. I have to decide if I will replace the alternator anyway or let the dealer search for a problem. I think I will start by changing the alternator and hoping for a refund if it is something else. Good Luck...

Check the wiring connections on the alternator. A loose wire can cause your problem

The wiring looks good, and has a good connection. My mechanic also said that the regulators on these vehicles are not with the alternator, but are controlled by the computer? I believe, some sort of computer anyways. Do you think flashing the computer would do anything? He was lead to believe that the regulator was not working properly, but had no way to adjust it because it was run by the computer.

The voltage regulator is internal to the alternator. If the light comes on randomly, there is more than likely a wiring issue somewhere. It is hard to pinpoint where the problem may be since it is intermittent.

Wiring diagram, multimeter and wiggling wires. If this comes through for you, it is directly from Ford's manual.


PINPOINT TEST A: THE CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS ON WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING
Test Step Result / Action to Take A1 CHECK THE BATTERY

  • Carry out the Battery — Condition Test to determine if the battery can hold a charge and is OK for use. REFER to Section 414-01.
  • Is the battery OK?
  • Yes
    GO to A2.

    No
    INSTALL a new battery. REFER to Section 414-01. TEST the system for normal operation. A2 CHECK FUSE 10 (10A) (All except PZEV), (1A) (PZEV)
  • Check fuse: Fuse 10 (10A) (All except PZEV), (1A) PZEV) in the Battery Junction Box.
  • Is the fuse 10 (10A) (All except PZEV), (1A) (PZEV) OK?
  • Yes
    GO to A3.

    No
    INSTALL a new fuse. TEST the system for normal operation. If the problem persists, check for a short to ground. A3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM
  • Carry out the Load Test using the diagnostic tool.
  • Is the generator output OK?
  • Yes
    DIAGNOSE the charging system warning indicator. REFER to Section 413-01.

    No
    GO to A4. A4 CHECK THE GROUND INTEGRITY
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between the generator housing and the negative battery terminal.
  • Is the voltage less than 0.5 volt?
  • Yes
    GO to A5.

    No
    CLEAN and TIGHTEN the generator mounting, engine-to-body ground strap, and battery ground cable. TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern persists, INSTALL a new battery ground cable. REFER to Section 414-01. A5 CHECK BATTERY CABLE
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between the generator C102c B+ terminal circuit 30-BA6 (RD) and the positive battery terminal.
  • Is the voltage less than 0.5 volts?
  • Yes
    GO to A6.

    No
    CLEAN and TIGHTEN the positive battery cable connections. TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern persists, INSTALL a new positive battery cable. REFER to Section 414-01. A6 CHECK BATTERY FEED TO THE GENERATOR
  • Measure the voltage between the generator C102c B+ terminal, circuit 30-BA6 (RD), harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage equal to the battery voltage?
  • Yes
    GO to A7.

    No
    REPAIR circuit 30-BA6 (RD) or circuit 30-BB10 (RD). TEST the system for normal operation. A7 CHECK POWER TO THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Generator C102a.
  • Measure the voltage between the generator C102a pin 3, circuit 30-BA10 (RD), harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
  • Yes
    GO to A8.

    No
    If fuse 10 (10A) (All except PZEV), (1A) (PZEV), is OK; REPAIR circuit 30-BA10 (RD). TEST the system for normal operation. A8 CHECK POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND COMMUNICATIONS LINK WITH GENERATOR
  • Connect: Generator C102a.
  • Connect the diagnostic tool.
  • Key in ON position.
  • Retrieve PCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Are any DTCs retrieved?
  • Yes
    Use the diagnostic tool to diagnose the PCM and communications.

    No
    INSTALL a new generator. REFER to Section 414-02. TEST the system for normal operation.
