Contemporary cars employ dozens of sophisticated electronic systems from bumper to bumper, placing heavy demands on the charging system. The alternator is no place to cut corners. DENSO First Time Fit alternators meet or exceed all manufacturer standards, mount properly with a minimum of installation issues, and provide years of reliable service. Features. Premium cores and precise OE assembly benchmarks; Design to meet the grueling heat and electrical requirements; First Time Fit provides perfect mounting with no belt/pulley alignment issues; Benefits. Service professionals preferred DENSO's alternators for a trouble free solution; OE quality fit, appearance, and durability; Full compatibility with sensitive electronics systems; Compact and lightweight design

1995 Dodge Dakota

Question From rodknee1 on 1995 Dodge Dakota

I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9 engine. I drove about 20 miles the other day and when I got home it would start back up. It would turn over and the fuel pump was running, but it would not start. I poured a little gas in the throtle body and it ran for just second. The next day it started right up and everything was fine until about 5 minutes of running the headlights. What happened was the headlights started flashing on and off and my oil pressure gauge started bouncing around. Could this be a short or a bad ground and could all of these problems be related? If it could be a short or a bad ground where should I start looking?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

?? Check condition of battery, alternator and all the battery cable connections at battery and engine ends too. Begin with that,

Alternator Over Charging

Question From joejet26404 on Alternator Over Charging

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota that has a 6 cylinder motor and has 75K miles. The problem I'm having is that my truck's alternator is over charging. I was driving the truck yesterday and a warning light came on that said "CHECK GAUGES". The charging system gauge was all the way to the right at 18 volts. Can someone tell me what the problem is. I'm thinking about simply changing the Alternator, but I'm not sure if that's what's causing the problem. I talked to a person at Auto Zone and they said that if I keep driving the truck, I can damage the battery.
If somebody has any idea what is causing this problem, your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Joe

Response From Sidom

As HT said.....You probably want to check this one out or get it checked out before you start throwing parts at it.....

1st you would want to make sure that it is fact overcharging......Dash gauges are informational only.....

Start with getting the battery tested to make sure it's good and then take a voltage reading at the battery and make sure there is a problem......The voltage regulator is part of the comp (isn't that such a great idea) and the whole computer would need to be replaced or repaired if it is a regulator problem....

I know on some of the older Chry's, there was an external voltage regulater kit you could install that would bypass the one in the comp saving have to change it out.....But I don't know.....With Chrys track record with problems with their PCMs in that era, might not be a bad idea to change the whole comp if it is a regulator problem...

Response From joejet26404

Thanks guys for the feedback. Looks like I'll be taking it in and have it checked out. If it is the PCM that needs to be replaced, hopefully its not to expensive.
Thanks again,
Joe

As said get the real voltage. If for a split second you see even a credible 16V+ don't run it till fixed or blow things all over it. Bulbs, the least of the troubles. By 18V+ any thing could blow - monster bucks not just a battery at risk as well,

Response From Hammer Time

The voltage regulator is incorporated into the PCM on that vehicle and could be the cause of the problem. It could also be an issue with the related wiring too so it needs to be diagnosed properly.

1995 Dodge Dakota won't start

Question From djdickhauswyo on 1995 Dodge Dakota won't start

I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota SLT that was running fine when I parked it. Its has a 318 engine and about 138,000 miles on it. Its been serviced every 2500 miles since new. A retired mechanic next door to me took off a valve cap like thing on the top of the engine and had me cycle the ignition key. He said the fuel pump was shot. My mechanic, who I've gone to and trusted for years, ran the same test and told me the same thing. I had him replace the fuel pump and it still wouldn't start. He hooked up his scanner and the computer would not communicate with it. I got THREE computers from the local salvage yard and none of them would communicate either and it still won't start. He also checked the relays in the fuse box under the hood and said they were all good. He said he had to give up on it and only charged me the cost of the new fuel pump and didn't charge me for labor(pulling the pickup bed off) because he couldn't get it running. What next folks? I'm getting desperate!

Response From MobileMechanic

Have you solved your problem?

Response From Hammer Time

This thred is over a year old.

Response From Hammer Time

Sounds like it's time to stop guessing and do some testing.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Response From Discretesignals

He hooked up his scanner and the computer would not communicate with it.

You try the key dance(on,off,on, off, on) and see if the check engine light would flash any codes?

Your not going to have fuel pump relay or ASD relay activation if the PCM doesn't come on. You need to pinout the PCM connectors and check the circuits that supply bat/ignition power and ground to the PCM.

Rule #1: Always check for powers and grounds to the PCM, engine controller, igniter, or any electrical component before condemning that component.

Response From Hammer Time

I would first do all the basic testing. Just because it won't communicate with a scan tool doesn't automatically point to an ASD issue.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

True. But if you can't communicate with the PCM even with the key dance, that could mean the PCM is down which won't activate the ASD relay making your spark and injector tests fail.

Without the ASD relay you won't have have power to the ignition coil, injectors, or alternator field.

You could check for primary power at the ignition coil while cranking to confirm if the ASD isn't energized.

Check Guages/Voltage drop 2000 Dakota Water Pump Bearing

Question From gldavison on Check Guages/Voltage drop 2000 Dakota Water Pump Bearing

2000 Dodge Dakota 5.9l v8 108k miles: Changed Alternator thus far.
Symptoms: Back a few months my truck began squealing like a belt slipping and it would come and go. This progressed to the "check gauges" light coming on, which then progressed to the voltage meter dropping to zero.
I changed the alternator but that did not make the problem go away.

I can sometimes drive for a day or two without it acting up but once it starts I have to turn of the ignition and restart to have the light go out and the volt meter to regain 15 amps/volts? This is very frustrating and I am afraid of the computer being at fault $$. The belt tension is good and the tensioner pulley has good spring tension.

I did notice while trying to resolve why, that the serpintene belt seemed to walk towards the block on the fan pulley every so often. After looking closer it seems that the belt is not walking but the fan/crank itself is moving forward towards radiator, just a little? Now I am really scared!!! could someone please help me out?

Thank you very much.

Greg
Sturgeon Bay, WI

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Is this using a water pump driven fan clutch like in the pic above? With engine off you could probably just wobble or carefully encourage that motion you noticed and see if the clutch or the water pump is causing that. If the belt can't stay on track all bets are off for it working for the other assories. HEY - that can fall right off and cause a ton of damage so get after that!

T

Response From gldavison

Tom,

Thanks for the reply. I am glad for any advice. Today I checked again under the hood and there was anti freeze being misted about by the fan. This is new as of today. Although I have noticed the hot smell, sort of anti freeze smell when I exit the truck but could not figure out where it was leaking.

So Tom is this my water pump that has/is going out? I can wobble the fan and yes it is on a clutch. What do I need to do? I am guessing a bearing is shot?

Thank you for the reply and any further help you can be. The weekend is here and now is the time when I can work on the old horse.

Best Regards,
Greg

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Ok: The wobble with a leak IS the water pump with almost no doubt. May be hard to tell but the clutch could be bad too or even wobbled itself and think seriously about replacing both.

I don't have the software for a diagram of this job so take a look - I'll try as best I can if you want to tackle this. Just say so - I'll do some digging for info. I don't know this engine specifically. Do you have the sockets and wrenches for this?

Just say if you want to do this and we'll kick in,

Good luck,

T

Response From gldavison

Thanks so much Tom. I picked up a pump yesterday at Napa so this afternoon I will work on the bugger. I have a Chilton book for my truck so I am pretty sure I should be ok from here out. I sure do appreciate your help.

I wonder if I did not need to replace the alternator after all?

I will let you know how things go. Thanks again. Good helpful people like yourself are out there it is just finding them. Thanks

Greg

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Ok: Good luck. I did move the whole thread to "engine troubles" so if it confuses you join the club as it confuses me to do that sometimes. Also changed your first subject line to state what it is now for surfers

Tom- Thanks so much for your help in diagnosing and then the tips on replacing the water pump on my Dodge p/u. Saturday afternoon I began around 5:00 pm and finished at 10:00 not bad for me.... Everything seems OK and my heater is even performing better! Needed it here yesterday and today -8* F. Brrrrr

There is still a squeal when the truck warms up and the rpm's are raised not sure what is making that yet but I also have yet to investigate.

Thanks again and God bless you for your kindness.

Best Regards,
Greg Davison
Sturgeon Bay, WI

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Good for you for getting that job done. For the squeel: It could be anti-freeze on the belt, belt itself may have sustained some trauma from the wobbling pump, belt tension not enough due to tensioner or stretched belt?? If it is in proper track and seems ok just try some spray like WD-40 on it - if that shuts it right up for a while and everything else is fine just do that a few times or seek out a belt made to be quiet. They made them and it isn't to cover a problem but some vehicles just get fussy about that.

Good luck - stay warm!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

: That should be the pump. I'm just searching parts at Autozone for pics. No repair guide there for this but that pump doesn't look too hard - famous last words!

Question From Gerrym on 02 dakota will not start

Hi,
2002 Dodge Dakota
3.9 L Engine, 4 wheel drive
177,000 kilometers, or approx. 105,000 miles
I bought a plow 2 years ago and an 02 Dakota came with it.
It originally ran erratically and I had to replace the coil and crank position sensor to get it to run smooth. It is not licensed for the road so it sits a lot. I have since replaced the alternator and starter. The oil was changed this spring. I ran it up this summer and changed out all the brake lines as they were ripe. Had it ready for winter and running fine, put it in the garage to wait for snow. Snow flew, truck won't start. Checked a few things but found the engine sump full of fuel before I got too far. Have seen this on Medium speed diesels before but not on a gas engine....any thoughts? I'm a Marine engineer so I do most of my own work...cause I like it:)

Response From Hammer Time

I would put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see if it's holding rest pressure. You could have an injector stuck open.

Response From Gerrym Top Rated Answer

ill put the pressure tester on it and check the rest pressure.
Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

The pump is supposed to come on for 2 seconds when the key is first turned on and doesn't resume until the computer sees a cranking signal.

Response From Gerrym

Makes sense.
I checked the pump and it(the pump) does cut out and does not cut back in.
