Question From JAKALLANNA on 1999 DODGE DAKOTA SPORT

1999 DODGE DAKOTA SPORT 4 CYL NO POWER BAD FUEL MILEAGE

Response From steve cooper

pcm not holding codes what can i do

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This is a year and a half old not by OP. What is the exact vehicle and issue? This thread should be separated - T

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I didn't realize that when I posted. I'm locking it now and the poster needs to start his own thread.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Get a code reading - it has something to tell you no doubt,

T

Response From JAKALLANNA

WHERE DO I GET A CODE READING, SORRY MECH DUMMY HERE

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Many of the larger and others parts outlets are doing code readings for free! Since 1996 up, all vehicles made have on board diagnostics called OBDII which is monitoring tons of items and the code(s) don't necessarily say exactly what to do but should lead to the problem area.

Example might be an oxygen sensor saying it has enough fuel delivery and tell the vehicle to make adjustments to compensate or 100s of possible things. You may have a clogged converter and should know that performance of it is poor or below specs. Things like that save time in manual diagnosing or wasting time and money replacing things that are NOT the cause. Even if the check engine light is not staying on it's watching and in time if an engine isn't running well will throw a hard code and light will stay lit.

Still takes human judgement on what to do based on the info. If you are not one to fix this yourself then about all shops will do a code reading first with this complaint. Acting fast with an engine that isn't running properly can save a ton of bucks vs waiting,

Question From wh2311 on 1993 dodge dakota transmission shifting

1993 dodge dakota 4x4, 3.9, auto. takes along time to shift to drive. shifts fine first to second and drive to overdrive . i changed the filter but no change

Response From eric618 Top Rated Answer

Have the same problem with my 1994 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with automatic. Have to run the RPMs up high to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Is there an adjustment for this shift point and where is it on the trans. I don't see an TV cable on this truck going to the throttle. Did anyone else have this problem?

Response From Hammer Time

You need to start a new question of your own. Don't hijack someone else's.

Question From geliza on 95 dodge dakota truck won't start

95 Dodge Dakota Truck SLT 4WD v6 150000+miles. We just bought it. It ran a very short while and conked out. Replaced the fuel pump and DODGE DAKOTA Engine Computer / Powertrain Control Module ECM ECU PCM . Still doens't work. Can't figure out what's wrong. think electrical. Can you help?

(Deafeated hyperlink - not allowed)

Response From Discretesignals

Why did you replace the ECM?

You need to figure out what is missing:

What is the fuel pressure reading using a fuel pressure test gauge

Is there a spark on the coil output wire? Is there spark at the plugs?

Do you have injector pulse?

Response From geliza

fuel pressure reading 0
no spark at coil or the plugs
dont know what an injector pulse is
Thanks

Response From Discretesignals

Does the check engine light come on when you turn the ignition on? If so, are there any trouble codes stored?

Do you have a volt meter?

Response From geliza

It turnns over. No juice to the fuel pump.
The 'check engine' light doesn't come on.
Don't have a volt meter.

Response From Discretesignals

The check engine light not coming on when you turn the ignition on probably means the ECM isn't powered up. One thing the ECM does is turn on the ASD relay to supply power to the fuel injectors, ignition coil, fuel pump relay, etc.

You'll need to test for power and grounds to the ECM with a volt meter. The ECM will also shut down if the power supply circuits for various sensors is shorted to ground.

Question From davisblack on 1988 Dodge Dakota Fuel Pump

I have a 1988 Dodge Dakota V6 with 350,000 MI on it and i just replaced the fuel pump and now it starts just fine but stalls out after 5 min any advice?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

davis; Check to see if you are lacking spark and/or fuel at the time it dies. (you did replace the fuel filter at the same time, correct?)

Response From davisblack

davis; Check to see if you are lacking spark and/or fuel at the time it dies. (you did replace the fuel filter at the same time, correct?)

I checked all of that and I replaced the fuel filter as well.

Response From steve01832

You may either have an IAC problem or the SMEC is faulty. If you disconnected the battery, start the vehicle and feather the gas to keep it running. Unfortunately, you will need to do this until the engine reaches normal operating temp. If this doesn't fix it, and I'm not saying this is definitely the problem, only that I have seen this a lot, the SMEC could be the culprit. The SMEC is the black computer on the driver's side inner fender under the hood.

Steve

Response From davisblack

Well it will idle for 5 min or so before it stalls but when I try and feather the gas it starts ''gasping for fuel'' and stalls out immediatley.

Response From steve01832

Okay, two things to try. Put the fuel pressure guage back on the rail and double check the pressure. Could be a defective pump.
Next, could just be a computer relearn issue.

Steve

Response From davisblack

Thanks for all the help. I was also told I could need a new fuel pressure regulator.

Response From Sidom

In addition to the other advise, you may want to get the codes pulled to see if there is any help there. I believe on these you can cycle the key 3 times to get the SES light to flash the codes.

How long do you have to let it sit before it will start again? I've had a few of these with bad connector for the ECT (coolant temp) cause some warm running problems.............

Response From davisblack Top Rated Answer

It starts right up after it stalls.

Response From Sidom

Probably won't be an ECT issue then but still see if you can get the codes pulled to see if there's any direction there.

Response From steve01832

Does the engine start after it dies or does it need to sit for a while?

Steve

Response From davisblack

Does the engine start after it dies or does it need to sit for a while?

Steve

Yeah it starts right up just fine after it stalls.

Question From 56chevy on 98 dodge dakota

I have 98 dodge dakota sport with a 318 5.2 liter automatic 2 wheel drive that is getting no spark and no fuel. engine cranks but doesnt start. have replaced the crank position sensor, switched the fuel pump relay and auto shut down relay. i appreciate your help

Response From Guest

Replaced crankshaft sensor was replaced 2X, both times it ran for a block then wont restart again, what could it be?

Response From dave284

Have you had the pcm replaced?, what kinda codes are coming up?

Response From Double J

Hi

Possibly the cam Sensor (Hall effect switch) inside the distributor.

Jim

Edit:
P.S..Just thinking too..check to make sure the distributor shaft is turning....make sure it didn't jump time.

Response From 56chevy

what is a hall effect switch

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Read this...

I guess its the "points" on a 56 chevy...LOL

The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor provides camshaft position information which is used by the ECM for fuel and ignition system synchronization. The sensor is a Hall effect digital sensor. It has a metal pulse ring and a pickup assembly located inside the distributor. The CMP signal is a digital on/off type signal. When the pulse ring travels through the pickup, a permanent magnet inside the pickup creates magnetism, which induces voltage. The pulse ring has slots, or one large slot; as the slot(s) pass, the pickup loses its magnetism and voltage is lost, thereby generating the on/off signal. The CMP and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor let the ECM know the position of the camshaft and crankshaft, so the engine can be properly timed.

Fig. 1: Distributor with an integral Hall effect switch (CMP sensor)

Response From Double J

Looks like this removed...notice the pulse ring inside the distributor..that passes thru this...

Response From 56chevy

is this what would give the injectors there pulse

Response From Double J

This is what creates the spark....signals the coil...just like how old ignition points used to do...
If the PCM doesn't receive this signal,or crank shaft position sensor signal, the automatic shutdown relay (ASD) will shut off the fuel pump,injectors,02's,etc.
The PCM controls the injectors based on inputs from this and crank sensor and various sensors.

Hope that clears it up.

Jim

Response From 56chevy

yes thank you for all the info i have a few things to look at
