04 Buick Lesabre cooling fans vs alternator

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From Ronnie2834 on 04 Buick Lesabre cooling fans vs alternator

I have a 2004 Buick Lesabre Custom with a 3.8 and about 130,000 miles. My issue is with the A/C turned on and engine temp at operating range the cooling fans with not cut on to cool the engine or cool the A/C. The A/C compressor is engaging. Once I disconnect the electrical plug from the alternator everything begins to work as it should. This is also a brand new alternator. Once I plug it back up cooling fans shut down again and the car begins to then overheat if left running. The car has been put on a garages scanner, had all relays and fuses checked, was showing a spike in voltage so the mechanic recomended I replace the alternator and I still have the same issue. Any Ideas on what else to check before it goes back to the shop??????

If you have a volt meter, what is the charging system voltage at the battery?

Question From wpowersii on 1995 buick park avenue battery light stays on on

my buick dash battery light will not go out it has voltage gauge plus red light for battery, replaced alternator, battery, and drive belt today. voltage gauge is reading normal but light will not go out please help driving me crazy also i made sure and had part store test alternator and it passed all three tests

Response From Double J

Check the fuses........Possibly could be a blown fuse.
Possibly could be fuse #6...or #5..but check 'em all..

Check with an external voltage meter as well.

Response From wpowersii Top Rated Answer

which fuse box one on drivers side or the one thats hard to get to that says in owners manual take to dealer if you need to access this fuse panel

Response From Double J

I'm not 100 % on the location of the fuse box where this fuse is..but probably check the one thats accessable...probably will be in there...

There are on some models at least 2 fuse boxes and more that that on some cars...
Check the one on the drivers side ,under dash?
Check underhood for one as well....
Because there is a fuse for the alternator indicator light...or should be...

Response From wpowersii

thanks will try

2000 Buick LeSabre oncoming starting problem

Question From Tim011 on 2000 Buick LeSabre oncoming starting problem

Thanks for help ahead of time.

2000 Buick LeSabre @ 95,000 miles

OK buick stalled on me when turning wheels hard to park. When restarting sounded like it wouldn't but caught. Parked it for night, in morning started right up. What seems to be happening is when run for short period of time, turned off and then restarted it sounds like it won't start but does - I assume this will soon change. If run for a time and left it appears to start as it should.

Does this sound like alternator or a battery? Can an alternator put out less than supposed to and therefore need a longer ride to charge the battery? Thank you for taking the time to help with this issue.

Tim

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Contrary to popular belief, alternators are not designed to recharge a dead battery.

They are designed to maintain a battery. Using them to recharge a dead battery will overload them and often cause them to fail.

Response From Hammer Time

All you have to do is test the battery and charging system and find out.

Response From timitaoe

it takes around usually 8-15 (depending on starter size alternator size and various other things) minutes of running for your alternator to put the juice back in he battery that it takes to start it. so if you start it to drive to the end of the driveway to check your mail 15 times a day or any other such short trips. you might have problems.

Question From iamthebuddy on 1984 buick lesabre

HI I have a 1984 buick with the 307 in it, the altenator was on the fritz, so i bought a reman one to put in
now when i test my system, its charging fine with no loads on but drops to low 12v's with loads on
is this normal

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Is the replacement alternator of the proper amperage (output) for this car’s accessory options? Back then there were three or four different alt’s that all looked the same and would bolt up. But internally the windings were different; more windings more amperage output.
What rpm are you testing this at; it should be at a minimum of 1500 rpm. If at 1500 rpm, with all accessories on and the voltage is above 12.5 you should be ok?
Last thing, have the battery tested; if the battery is beginning to sulphate, it may not except a “full” charge and make the alternator seem week. I’ve seen many batteries be the cause of an alternator failure. The alternator is constantly running full tilt, trying to get the battery voltage to stabilize.

Question From dog45us on 94 buick century

94; Buick century. I was driving at night and all of sudden my lights would get bright then dim, my volt meter would pulsate real bad go way up then way down. the volts on the meter have always ran right below the red, I had the alternator tested they said it ran a 10 but periodically made a funny sound. do you recommend changing it or is there another problem?

Response From kev2

it ran a 10- 10 what...this is a 12v system and alt will put out up to 14v so 10 cannot be voltage..
also check output amps and diode leakage..

any on going issues- as always check for codes even if light is off

Response From Tom Greenleaf

? Get codes as Kev suggested but limited info for a 1994. Diode 'trio' is what I call the thing inside you could buy separately still no doubt but think if you tested out 10VOLTS one is going or gone. Check plain connection from smaller plug and the spade terminals they connect to at alternator. If bad I don't think a rebuilt is that much and probably done once or more already - some don't replace all parts but clean up the old cores real good and usually just brushes?

Charge your battery with a charger just because before installing any replacement parts. It's no doubt low and if not at full charge may work a new alternator way too hard and blow that one too or harm it. You can tell because if safe to touch while charging up normally if so they get too hot to touch in a couple minutes - too much on them,

T

Response From dog45us

that's what orileys told me it ran a ten it was fine. now should I just change it and hope for the best? cause idk what else to do

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just a note - you need an explanation of what a "10" means from the test machine. I can't know what the heck they are doing or using and don't let places touch parts of mine thank you but understand.

For $10 bucks you can still get a cheap voltmeter and see what it says yourself and again with everything on, at idle like blower full blast, headlights high beams, RWD a big draw and should stay over 13V assertively or find out why? Bad alternator if it can fluctuate or connections as said. Belt has to be properly tight as well - some don't screech if slipping.

Guess you get my drift - not thrilled with some places usually FREE testing,

T

Response From dog45us

also how to you get the belt back on? the altnator dosnt swivel where you can put the belt back on. had to damn near pry it off

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

I don't think this person is going to be able to pull trouble codes off that one. Its the in between year and you need an enhanced scan tool that Orilley won't have. Alternator isn't computer controlled anyway, so there are no codes for charging system problems.

Orilley diagnoses an alternator as good when it is outputting only 10 volts? That doesn't make sense.

If the funny noise is coming from the alternator and it is showing only 10 volts on the output lug, I'd say the alternator is bad.

Before you start up your vehicle after installing the new alternator, you should have your battery tested. If the battery is good, charge it fully off board. You sure don't want your new alternator frying itself trying to charge a junk battery. Also make sure your battery connections are free of corrosion and tight.

Response From Hammer Time

According to Alldata there was mixed use in this year. Some vehicles still had the 12 pin connector and those could get flash codes but others had the 16 pin and those required a professional OBD1 scan tool.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You release tension on the belt tensioner! Checked for a 3.1 V6 if not will check the 4 banger engine but from either the front or back there will be a square hole to turn to release belt. If you forced belt off or other trick you probably hurt the belt which may be fine now for testing but take a good look at it.
Tensioners (automatic ones) show a range where belt stretch over time has reaches. Look for plain marks for extremes of travel and see where it is when installed properly with belt.
One looks like this the 3/8ths square is handy as it's the same as a breaker bar or ratchet whichever works for you..........
/
Another showed the front with square I didn't show this is the back side not in quick view unless you look or feel for it,
