Question From unit on Mechanics Opinion

Hello everyone,

I have always bought my wife new cars. We own them for three or four years and inevitably trade it in for a huge loss, I'm done with that.

It seems to me there are plenty of nice used cars on the market as long as you do research and understand what you are buying.

Now my wife will only drive a car max four years before she's tired of it. I on the other hand like to keep a car and take care of it. My current car is 12 years old with 128,00 miles on it. So now I'm looking for a good used car.

I would like to buy one of these three year models between 08-10, Cadillac CTS-V, BMW 535, Mercedes Benz E 350

I'm looking for some expert advice on these three?? or do you think there is a comparable car that would be better?

Response From Sidom

Those are all good cars, I think it would really come down to what your wife likes to drive.....The Euro stuff is going to be more expensive to maintain but could have a better resale when it's time to up grade. The CTS is a very nice ride, definitely not a stereotypical Caddy...

Since you're going from new to used, I'd let her pick to try to keep as much peace as possible in the house and if there was anyway you could get her to think this was her idea, that would be a huge plus.....

Response From re-tired Top Rated Answer

If your going to go with high end stuff I would want to keep it under warrenty . A water pump on a benz can cost you the same as a few payments on a chevy. I think (ouch) the best way to go in your case would be to lease . You dont have to worry about resale or trade in headaches . Just drive in every four years and drive out with a fresh warranty and that new car smell . Besides unless you have buckets of cash for the used yuppy mobile your going to be making payments for four years anyway.

Response From Hammer Time

I wish we only had to keep a wife for 4 years and then get a new one.............

Response From Tom Greenleaf

HT - You do have some good ones!

Used cars: The cars listed are VERY expensive to both plain service or insane repair costs. If you have $$ for this that's fine just be prepared.

Personal choice and specific budgets for any as always. For me, I find handling and speed pointless where I am and try to choose more mainstream cars and keep them as long as practical.

Almost none are investments which equates to how much you'll lose vs another perhaps. For high end cars I find more repeat buyers of Lexus if longevity is the goal with less than average surprise problems but nobody avoids some at some point if kept long enough.

No matter what used vehicle you want or buy I suggest paying for an independent and thorough check - professionally - complete with collision history if any. One owner garaged and low miles with a good history counts a lot,
