Question From SatanicMechanic on honda turn signals

I just wanted to post a public service announcement lol
so last month in the shop I had 3 seperate early 90's honda accords come in with turn signals inop and a loud buzzing noise coming from the drivers kick panel. Since I don't have access to identifix, usually before I start an electrical diagnosis I turn to google.
Upon googling the symptoms I found a wealth of bad information, hence my PSA. All 3 cars had a voltage drop in the hazard switch, causing the solid state relay to buzz loudly, and intermittent turn signal operation. The hazards all worked normally however. Was an easy fix to trace with a multimeter, but since I didn't see any mention of it online anywhere I thought if I could post it in a forum it might help someone somewhere. If google can be belived, there's a lot of people pulling their hair out in frustration over this problem lol

Response From Hammer Time

usually before I start an electrical diagnosis I turn to google.

If that's your diagnostic method, you're in deep trouble.

There were no solid state relays in a 90 Honda. What you heard was the flasher buzzing. That's a 5 minute fix for most techs.

Response From SatanicMechanic

Honestly, first time I saw it, first thing I did was throw a flasher at it. The problem persisted. I took apart the old flasher to inspect for burning/mechanical damage and it definitely was not a run of the mill bimetallic flasher. Had a circuit board in it. All of that looked ok so I pulled a diagram off of mitchell, and began to check voltages in and out. The hazard switch had 12v in and 7v out. So I installed a jumper harness to bypass the switch for testing purrposes and everything started to work. And I've found more TSBs on google than in michell. If I had alldata or any other reliable source id use it I assure you :) I may be some dumb but im not plumb dumb, as the saying goes.

Response From Hammer Time

Yep, here's the TSB from Alldata

Bulletin No.: 91-008
Model : 1990-94 ACCORD
Applicable To: ALL
File Under: ELECTRICAL
Issue Date: JAN 7, 1994
Buzzing Noise During Turn Signal Lever Operation (Supersedes 91-008, dated March 1, 1991)
PROBLEM
The turn signal relay makes a buzzing noise when the turn signal lever is operated. This noise does not affect the turn signal's operation. The noise may vary and be intermittent.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the turn signal/hazard relay with the new unit listed under PARTS INFORMATION.

1. Remove the turn signal/hazard relay from the under-dash fuse box by inserting a small screwdriver underthe holding tab on each side of the relay. Pull the relay straight out. 2. Install the new relay in the fuse box.
PARTS INFORMATION
turn signal relay : P/N 38300-SE3-003, H/C 2177863
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
In warranty: The normal warranty applies.
Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Service Manager or your Zone Off ice. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work. Operation number: 730125 Flat rate time: 0.3 hour Failed part: P/N 38300-SE3-004H/C 2177871 Defect code: 042 Contention code: B07

Response From SatanicMechanic

I stand corrected. It appears perhaps these hondas in question suffer from multiple problems. The main complaint was not the noise, but the lack of turn signal operation. Connecting the two into a single problem was an error on my part :)

Response From Hammer Time

There may be a TSB for a common issue with the flasher but that doesn't mean other things like the turn signal switch can't fail also. Any of them can prevent the signals from working but the buzzing noise is the flasher chattering.

Response From SpencerJ

Thanks for posting this info. I am going through this issue with my 96 Accord right now. I was about to swap out the hazard switch which costs me about 60 bucks. I think I'll try the relay first since it's buzzing there. Hopefully this will restore my turn and hazard signals to working order.

Now if I could only find where it is.

Response From SpencerJ Top Rated Answer

Update:

I replaced the relay and the sound has changed from a loud buzzing to a lower clicking sound. This happens only when the hazard is engaged and stops when it is not. Still no turn signals.

1996 Honda Accord LX Turn Signal Stutter

Showing 6 out of 8 Posts | Show 2 Hidden Posts
Question From klynt on 1996 Honda Accord LX Turn Signal Stutter

Year of vehicle - 1996
Make of vehicle - Honda
Model of vehicle Accord LX
Engine size - 2.2 litres
Mileage/Kilometers - 160k

I have an issue with my turn signal that has been getting steadily worse over the past year or so. It seems when the car is cold the turn signal has a hard time coming on. When I activate the signal it stutters for a while then finally turns on. I have noticed that once the car has been driven or the signal has been applied so many times that it "warms up?" and ceases to be an issue until the car is cold again. After a little bit of searching it seems that I may have a faulty flasher but I wanted to make a post here just to get any additional input.

Thanks!

Clint

Response From Hammer Time

Could you define what you mean by "stutter".

Response From klynt Top Rated Answer

Let me clarify. When I use the turn signal and it malfunctions it either produces no sound or a very erratic turning signal sound. Instead of the usual, click-click-click-click it's more like click....clickclick......clickclickclick. While this is going on the interior signal light is not activated and more importantly the outside is not as well. Once it stutters for about 20-30 seconds it starts behaving normally. The next time the signal is activated it will only stutter for around 0-5 seconds and will get progressively better the more times the turning signal is used.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

Response From Hammer Time

If this is happening universally with both sides, then yes, I would say the flasher is the likely culprit. If it's only happening on one side, then you need to look for a problem in one of the lights on that side.

Response From klynt

Yes, sorry, it is happening on both sides. Thanks for the help guys!

Response From Hammer Time

No problem. Let us know how it turns out.

Response From klynt

Hmm...after trying to price Flash Relays I stumbled upon this post http://groups.google.com/group/rec.autos.makers.honda/browse_thread/thread/21f21bd17d50dfbd in Google Groups. It's pretty old but the symptoms sound exactly like the ones I'm having. Could this be a possibility? Obviously I'd rather secure the grounds and save myself 20 bucks if I can.

Thanks!

edit: forgot the link

Response From Hammer Time

They are referring to the ground for the flasher. Obviously any problem effecting the flasher can be caused by the flasher itself or the related wiring. You can just manually jump that wire to ground to determine if it's the problem or not.

Question From Guest on 1995 Honda Accord

My turn signals aren't working. we already replaced the control arm and all the fuses and bulbs are good, But the hazards are still working...Anyone out there have any advice??? Please........

Response From DrElectrics

I agree with Guest #2. Have you checked yoru flasher cans? Do your hazard lights work? The flasher cans are situated under the hood of the car, in the fuse box there. Check the lid of the box for a map of what does what.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

anybody check the turn signal flasher?
also could be the multifunction switch.

Response From Guest

The only thing that you didn't mention as being OK was the wiring. Could be your foot got tangled up with the wiring under the dash. Hope it's under the dash anyway. If it's in the column with the airbag, it'll be expensive to repair. Better practice your arm signals.

Question From Guest on 05 Honda CBR 125 turn signals

Hi all, the problem I am having is with the turn signals (as stated above).

Every time I signal left, the front light does nothing (it stays off at all times) and the rear one comes on... But doesn't blink (it comes on as a constant light)

Unfortunatly I don't know much about bikes but I was/am thinking its a simple case of 2 wires being the wrong way round however any help would be appreciated

Bonus points to whoever can tell me how to fix it as well =D

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The problem is in the front turn signal. It may be a bad bulb or something wrong with the socket. It will have to be checked.

Response From Guest

Aye, I found out it was simply the bulb, changed it in 5 minutes and its all fine... I feel like a right tit =P Thanks anyway though =)

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Guest; Good for you! I've always felt like a left tit, myself.
