1994 Toyota Corolla lights won't turn off!

Question From seattlehiker on 1994 Toyota Corolla lights won't turn off!

I have a 1994 Toyota Corolla and when I turn the engine off the front side lights and the tail lights stay on.

I can't turn them off with the light switch and when I pull the fuses that should (I think) control those lights they still don't go off.

I have to disconnect the battery to get them to turn off.

What is the most likely problem? Is it a faulty switch on the control column or a short somewhere else?

The fuses that should result in the headlamps turning off do work. The light switch does work for turning off the headlamps as well.

Neither of those work to turn off the tail light and front side lights however.

Response From Discretesignals

Any aftermarket modifications done that are tied in the the exterior lighting system?

Response From seattlehiker

Not that I know of. I had an aftermarket auto alarm installed years ago. I don't think it affects the lights.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Did you remove the 15 amp tail lamp fuse in J/B (junction block) 1 to see if they go off?

J/B 1 is located left side of the dash

Response From seattlehiker

I did and they didn't go off.

Response From Discretesignals

Dash and gauge illumination lamps on too?

Response From Discretesignals

You do have a short to power somewhere after that fuse. You might want to start by checking that alarm system. Sometimes they tie the alarm system into the parking lamp system, so the alarm can flash the lamps when it is tripped. Unplug the alarm module. If the module uses an external relay to trigger lighting, unplug that too. See if your lamps go off.

Response From seattlehiker

No, just the tail lights and the side front lights.

Tail light problems on a 91 Toyota camry le

Question From pugs on Tail light problems on a 91 Toyota camry le

im having a problem getting my tail lights to worki have changed the bulbs many times , my brake lights work and so do my rear blinkers but the tails lights wont come on . I have also checked all fuses and thy all seem good

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

How did you check them? A visual inspection will not necessarily tell you if the fuse is blown or not. A test light or a multimeter are the surest way to test. If you don't have a test light, go buy one. They are really inexpensive and very valuable for troubleshooting. Remove a bulb and see iof you are getting current to the light socket. If not, first try grounding the socket. If still no current, go to the head light switch to see if there is current coming from the switch to the lights. If no---replace switch. If yes, it is either a broken wire or a bad ground.

1994 Toyota Camry Brake Lights Work Tail Lights Don't Please Help!

Question From Kelliherj on 1994 Toyota Camry Brake Lights Work Tail Lights Don't Please Help!

My name is Jennifer, I am a younger girl who knows nothing about car's besides the basic changing light bulbs, fuses, fluids....I just moved cross country and have no money but tail lights stopped working on my 94 Camry with a million miles on it. It's 2 wheel drive, 4 cyl, automatic, 200,000 miles. I want to try everything I can to fix it before I have to bring it to the shop. I checked all the fuses in the inside panel and replaced the tail light fuse, even though it looked fine. I replaced all the bulbs in the back of the car and checked for corrosion. The back side marker, signal, top brakes, brakes, and license plate lights work fine. All front lights including high beams work fine as well. Tail lights will not turn on when the lights are on, or at all. Had the dimmer switch replaced a year ago working fine. If anyone could explain to a novice anything else I could try to solve this, I would REALLY appreciate it : ) Thanks so much!

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

If you have confirmed that the side marker and number plate lights are working, then you have isolated your problem to that general area. Check all the wiring in the area using a testlight so you can determine where you are losing either power or ground. You may also have a bad "light failure sensor" which monitors the rear lighting.

Tail Lights Won't Turn Off :(

Question From boogsmurf on Tail Lights Won't Turn Off :(

Hello all! I just bought an 1988 Toyota Corolla. The one problem I've noticed so far is that the brakelights wont go off no matter what I do. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Under the dash at the brake light switch, there is supposed to be a rubber bumper for the switch to push on and they fall off. You'll have to get another one if it's missing.

Tail Lights Keep Going Off

Question From susay on Tail Lights Keep Going Off

Hi, A newbie here-

I have a Toyota Highlander 2006- Miles 48K, the tails lights keep going off.

All the other lights work just fine- brake lights, headlights, signal lights, but the tail lights.

I have taken the car to Toyota twice and they can’t seem to find the problem.

They fix the fuse and send me back home, two days later the tails lights are out again.

The car is due back to Toyota on Friday since I don’t have tail lights again!

It does not seem like they know what they are doing and I’m tried of taking the car back to them.

Any suggestion..... Please help

Sue

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Susay; You mentioned that they replaced the fuse? Electrical problems can be just a plain nightmare, sometimes, to find because the problem has to be happening at the time of testing. If the fuse has blown again, I'd request that they check the combination switch. This switch has the turn signals, headlamps, sometimes wiper and cruise controls going through it. I'd be surprised if that new of a vehicle has this problem, but I think I'd start looking there. Give them as much info as you can...how long you are driving before the fuse blows...Does it take 10 seconds, or an hour and a half? Electrical parts are very heat sensitive. May be just fine with the car 'sitting' there...

Response From susay Top Rated Answer

Hi Loren-

Thank you for your reply and input... Update I took the car back to Toyota on Friday 11/7/09. I told them exactly what you mentioned check the combination switch.

They said they checked everything and the only thing they could find was burnt bulb and they replaced all. I picked up the car on Saturday and all was well until last night when the tail lights went out again.

People on the freeway kept honking at me to turn my lights on, but my headlights were on but on tail lights…. I’m at the end of my wits don’t know what to do.

I’m taking the car back tomorrow…
