The original DENSO gear-reduction starter is an industry benchmark, so rugged and powerful that it is often adapted for racing use. DENSO remanufactured starters are subjected to a rigorous test and replacement routine that produces the lowest return rates in the replacement aftermarket. Armatures and field coils are high-voltage tested; commutators are refinished and performance-validated; terminals and fasteners are replaced with high-quality copper components. And every starter is exactingly bench-tested to ensure factory-original performance. Remanufactured components offer tremendous value to consumers, and by recycling valuable parts and precious raw materials to be used again, they're the environmentally responsible choice as well. For distributors, retailers, and consumers alike, DENSO First Time Fit® remanufactured starters are the ideal choice. Features: High-voltage tested armature and field coils to ensure reliable performance; Premium copper terminals to ensure a clean source of electrical current; All-new bearings, brushes, and seals; Benefits: Maximum cranking torque under all conditions; Class leaders in size and weight; Environmentally designed to start in cold and hot weather conditions

I have a 1996 Nissan Altima that wont start. When I turn the ignition al power goes on, chimes and headlights work but there is no sound from the starter, and the headlights don't dim. I can't get to the starter to jump the solenoid. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

If you cannot jump it at the starter......
Sounds like you have a faulty starter to me.

Response From DanD

I know that we’ve all done what Jim has advised you to try.
try giving the starter a couple of whacks with a hammer
And I still do, when I know that I have a bad starter and I’m trying to get one last start out of it; while out on a service call.
But there’s a good chance that if the starter isn’t the problem and you hit it with a hammer; you’ve just made it one.
Most of today’s starters use permanent magnet pole shoes, rather then electromagnetic, steel shoes.
Permanent magnets have a tendency to crack, if they are hit or dropped while being installed.
Believe me, I can have butter finger at times and I dropped one while installing it. The thing barely had enough power to turn itself, let alone an engine.

Sorry Jim I don’t mean to contradict you; but I hated buying a second starter for that customer’s vehicle; man the old starters, you could drop kick them across the shop and they’d still work with out a problem.

But hey, if I ever needed a starter whacked; you is daa hit man I’ll call. LOL

Dan.

Response From Double J

As you can see,I edited that portion out of my answer...
I will have to choose my words more carefully next time...
I re-read that and i know what i meant but I guess some would not and by saying give it a couple whacks with a hammer paints the picture to someone to go and grab a sledgehammer or a large maul and commence to beating the S**t out of your starter in hopes of bringing it back to life .If any thing ,I should have said a light tap or two...
That was certainly bad advice on my part and I stand corrected.I do not recommend doing this .
Never ever do this ...
Thankfully ,i have been lucky as to never have damaged a starter this way and even luckier that i have never dropped one..
I have worked with a couple guys who did drop starters.
As Dan stated, the old ones could take a beating.
This one country gent i worked with had a starter fall on the head .The starter was broken but he was no worse for wear...
I guess those Canuck boys dont know their own strength...LOL
So if you need a starter "whacked"..just call old alley mechanic Jim out to help ya...

Jim

Response From DanD

Again sorry Jim and I'm glad I didn't piss you off to much with my post. LOL
I know you didn't mean beat the shit out of the starter but you know people if a tap doesn't do it maybe a good old whack will. LOL

'09 Nissan Rogue Starter Issue?

Question From danthemon on '09 Nissan Rogue Starter Issue?

2009 Nissan Rogue AWD 90,000 Miles

For a few days when starting this car, It would whirr or whine after starting it. This would last for about 1minute then would go away and sound normal. However, now it will not start at all. Outside Temp is ~40F. I have a video showing the associated indications when trying to start it.

If you listen closely it sounds like something is spinning while attempting to start and RPM meter seems to have slight deflection. Also, the battery has been verified to be in good working order.
There is another probably unrelated issue but I will include the details in the event it may be related. The key did not need to be in the ignition to start the car. instead there was a proximity sensor that allowed starting the car as long as the key was within ~15ft. For the last 4 months, this feature has stopped working and now the key has to be inserted into the ignition. (I suspect it's a battery thing for the key and am not worried about getting this issue fixed)

Response From Discretesignals

Watching the gauges, I'd guess you have a battery or battery connection issue. How did you test the battery?

Response From danthemon Top Rated Answer

The vehicle was unable to be jump started with a different battery. Then the battery was removed and fully charged up, and the voltage verified to be adequate. So it was then re-installed back in the car.

Response From Discretesignals

Using a volt meter, what is the voltage at the battery terminals while attempting to crank the engine?

Response From kev2

your description sounds to me like a STARTER issue,
Basically the starter is spinning BUT not engaging the engine... a possible ring gear or starter drive pinion issue.

THe proximity issue is secondary and should be addressed after we gwet this started.

Question From aaron7 on nissan sentra ignition issues

A friend of mine is working on his 1997ish nissan sentra.
The starter turns and sounds good but engine won't start. The spark plugs were replaced but no go.
So it isn't the battery, starter, or spark plugs...which means the problem is past my mechanical skills. :) any ideas as to what the problem is or how to isolate the problem?
Thanks

Response From Discretesignals

The starter is cranking the engine?

If the engine is cranking, but won't start, you need to check for spark, fuel pressure, and injector pulse. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to see if there are any trouble codes being stored in the ECU. Write down any numbers you get.

Response From aaron7 Top Rated Answer

That's correct, the starter is cranking the engine but it won't start.
Thanks for the advice... I'll check on those three items

Response From aaron7

Ok, it isn't getting a spark... and like I said, the spark plugs have been replaced... distributor cap maybe?

Response From Hammer Time

Is it getting injector pulse?

What is the fuel pressure?

Do you have power supply to the + side of the coil and the injector?

Question From strodden on Nissan D21 Won't Start

I have a 1988 Nissan D21 with 124k miles. It's been well taken care of and generally starts first try. Occasionally, I go to start it and the starter just spins, motor turns but nothing happens. The battery is relatively new and there is nothing to indicate that the starter is failing to do its job.

I am new to car repair but am very keen to learn how to do this stuff and would prefer not to take this to the garage. Happy to answer any clarifying questions!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Exact car not known to be sold to the US but not a problem. By description you need a "STARTER DRIVE" which with a look can be done on a good starter or whole rebuilt starter. This also could be teeth missing badly from the flywheel. If a standard shift those if so put in say 2nd gear and push the car just a few inches till engine turns and it should start. If automatic trans that "flywheel" is called a ring gear and either if the problem require removal of the transmission.
Sample pic of what a starter drive looks like.........

Idea is it will freespin if you engage starter while engine is running and grab the opposite direction firmly. Most failed ones begin as intermittent with "hmmmmm" sound of just starter but not turning the engine then quit for good and just hummm.
Not always that easy to do just these without some practice and may cost more than a rebuilt starter?

Response From strodden

Thanks very much for the speedy reply! As far as the model goes, I did have to root around until I found what I think it is - Nissan didn't put any badges on it :(

Anyway, yes it is a manual and I am up for the challenge/learning opportunity. You think it might be better to replace the whole starter?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

You really need to know the exact car and engine. Datsun was the original name that became Nissan only. YOU must be sure it's really anything to do with the starter as well! I'm guessing based on what you said and described.
So. If not sure have a mechanic diagnose the problem could be in seconds? Easiest and fastest if declared a problem with the starter is a whole starter. I mentioned a part of a starter the rebuilding shops would do that most people don't deal with directly or even know that those are parts THEY buy but many people do not or not aware of it.
So - be sure a newly rebuilt starter would in fact be the fix and yes that would be the fastest way to be done with this,

Response From strodden

Okay, thanks again. I'll have it checked out!
