Question From Guest on 1996 mercury sometimes starts sometimes not

96 mercury cougar has starting problems?
The car sometimes will not start. After about 2 minutes it would start. When it didn't start there was no turnover or any sound at all. The lights and radio did work however. Took it to a mechanic that scraped corrosion off of the starter. The car ran well for a week. Last night it once again did not start. Called a tow truck and waited. About 1 and a half hours later jiggled the spark plug wires and the battery cables. The car did not start. No sound at all. Right before the driver got there 20 minutes later, decided to just try just turning the key one last time. It started. It still starts and runs. What does this sound like the problem could be?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Long shot, but neutral safety switch? Try starting in neutral?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

That's not such a long shot Loren - good idea. With this intermittent crap guess you just have to try several times when it doesn't start and have that correct it to know - huh?

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

That's still consistant IMO with just what you already did - the connections at the starter. I'd re-do that with starter removed and consider a new solonoid too. Check the rest of the battery cable connections as well first if you want to try those first but I find the starter the more likely spot for the problem described,

Question From woodbrew09 on p0301 keeps coming up

I have a 2001 mercury sable with a 3.0 24 valve engine with 110000 miles on it. I keep getting the code p0301 which is a miss fire on cylinder #1. I have had a compression test ran on cylinder #1 and its reading in the 120s, I had the coil pack check and its firing on all 6, and I had spark plugs and spark plug wires changed on it. Can you please tell me if there is any other easy repair that it could possibly be? I have heard that it could be with the air flow through the air filter. Does this seem plausable?

Response From Hammer Time

Exactly how did you have the coil pack checked?

Response From woodbrew09 Top Rated Answer

the nmechanic did this thing with it to make sure all ports were sparking through and they were

Response From Hammer Time

That type of test really does not clear the coil. Your miss is likely very intermittent and only occurring under load so that test won't show anything. I would compare the color of the spark plug in that cylinder to the other cylinders and see if it is any darker or lighter. Darker would mean ignition miss, lighter would indicate lack of fuel. I'm not saying it's the coil but you haven't ruled it out yet.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

woodbrew; You can have it tested with an exhaust analyzer to see if that cylinder is getting fuel. You can also ohm check the injector, listen with a stethescope to hear if it is clicking with the engine running. (if it is clicking, that doesn't mean it's not plugged). (If it isn't clicking, check the circuit with a noid light to be sure you are getting voltage and ground).

2003 mercury sable GS wont start

Question From GU on 2003 mercury sable GS wont start

(2003 Mercury Sable GS Acting strange). It has been acting very strange. It will stall for a second and restart its self while going down the road.
It also has had the ABS and anti-theft light come on and the flicker off while driving. It also have had the fuel warning light come on with a half of a tank of gas. And now it takes spells not starting and shutters until warm. Have replaced fuel filter. And now it is at a shop because it would not start at all, they though it had jumped timing and found out the timing is fine. It has started ruff for them every once in a while. Very Frustrated

Response From car1104

The running and restarting issue is tricky. First check the ground on the distributor. Put a voltohm meter on milli-volts, Not ohms, and put the positive on the distributor hold down. put the negative on the negative terminal. You should get less then 2 milli-volts. Anything more say 0.005 or 0.006 volts and it is a bad distributor ground, you would need a jump cable from the dirtributor holddown to the negative battery terminal.

I don't know where you even came up with this nonsense on a motor that doesn't even have a distributor. What modern dist even requires a ground through the mounting?

Response From Discretesignals

Are there any trouble codes stored in the PCM or the ABS modules? If so, what are the numbers?

What is missing when it doesn't want to start?

Response From GU

Just talked to mechanic. It is throwing a variety codes and they check it out and it is not it. It is also throwing codes that do not even exist. They are trying my other keys out to see if it is the transponder in the key is bad. Every time they reset and try again it gives them something else.

Response From Discretesignals

Just curious, but if you have this in a repair shop and professional automotive technician is diagnosing it, why are you here asking us for troubleshooting tips? If the tech isn't able to figure it out, they either need to call for an experienced drive-ability specialist or send it down the road. You aren't there to diag the vehicle yourself and since your playing middle man, we don't know if communications are being twisted.

Response From GU

Because I need my car and although he has been in business for year he has never seen anything like this and is as baffled as to what is wrong. I was hoping some one else might have encountered something simlar and would be able to direct us in a general direction as to what it might be. Sorry to trouble you.

Response From Discretesignals

I'm sorry and understand what you mean by being frustrated when it comes to repairing problems such as the one you have. We run into problems like that all the time, but not every one of them have the same culprit. It would be nice to know what trouble code numbers keep popping up after they are cleared out.

Response From GU

Never could get them to give me the codes. There was one on the invoice PO 316. They ended up replacing the ECM and reprogrammed ECM with latest update. Thus eliminating a multiple list of problems. I had been trying to get rid of a miss by replacing spark plugs, wires, and coil pack 5 years ago to no avail. MPG drop from 28 mpg to 22 mpg. Turning itself off while going down the road at 70 mph, and then turning itself back on. Have had it back for about 2 weeks now . I waiting a little while longer before I say well done. I waiting to see if any of the other oddities that where happening come back. Like the radio turning itself on an off, and the left blinker running fast and then it would be OK for a period then act up again.

Are you saying that you have been driving this thing with a miss for 5 years?

Response From GU

It would come and go. But towards the end you could feel the car cough when driving. It was like a small jerk when it would miss.

Response From kev2

post any and all codes - esp the ones that do not exist

1993 Mercury Cougar car accelerates strangley after it warm

Question From adam035827 on 1993 Mercury Cougar car accelerates strangley after it warm

after about 20 minutes of driving my car the check engine light turns on. the car then begins to shake and accelerate much slower than it usually does, and after about 2 seconds it accelerates quickly again. the car only shakes when my foot is on the gas. it doesnt do this constantly but it does it every time i drive it longer than 20 minutes. the check engine light also turns on for a short time then off and back on again. there does not seem to be a correlation to the light and the symptoms, but they both always happen around the same time. ive replaced the spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, and the transmission. ive also had my entire fuel system cleaned. any help would be appreciated. this is driving me nuts.

Response From nickwarner

The engine light is coming on, therefore there are codes that tell what system is acting up. Get the codes read, post back with them and we can see what we are dealing with. Not much else we can do without that.

Response From adam035827

the car was made before the code thing came out :(

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

93's had codes but used OBDI system not the '96 and newer OBDII which is more comprehensive,

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Agree with nick - get the code(s) but for now I'd ignore a likely code for O2 sensor in a '93 as running lousy would fool it. I'm thinking more likely (still check) the TPS or connection to it is trouble. Don't just replace it on just that or be throwing parts at random as that's a waste. Some stuff will last forever and some is subject to wear,
