Question From perry on oil leak 1996 ram 1500

1996 dodge ram 1500 5.2L oil leak. Replaced rear mainseal, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket still have leak , that looks like a rear main seal leak, need help

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Have a look across the back of the intake manifold; I've seen where the manifold is sealed with silicone between the two heads leak from there. The oil will run between the block and the transmission’s bell housing and it will look like a main seal leak?
Dan.

Response From perry

DanD,

Thanks for the advise. I won't have time to look at it until Fri. I'll keep you posted

Question From teri on flywheel help

I replaced a engine on my 05 dodge Durango 4.7l, with a 05 dodge ram 1500 4.7, but engine wont turn over I replaced the starter with ram 1500 starter while I have it torn apart do I need to replace the flywheel also with a dodge ram flywheel . I really need help on this one.

Response From Discretesignals

Which transmission did the Ram have? Is the Ram 4wd or 2wd? Is the Durango 4wd or 2wd? Did you compare the flywheels to be sure they are the same? They should be, of course.

When you mean turn over, do you mean the starter isn't activating or the starter is activated, but doesn't spin the crank?

I don't think the starter from the Ram will work on the Durango because it is bolted to the passenger side on the Durango and on the driver's side on the Ram and they both have different drive gears.

Response From teri

Update-e advices -- I wish to thank all for their in put it was helpful , I was finally informed there is no way for that engine to work since the starters are opposite sides so I have to return it and request one for the durnago. Again thanks or your help

Response From teri

thanks for the help to answer your question they are both 2WD, and the starter activates but dosen"t spin the crank. The clerk at the part store recommended I put on the ram starter since I am in putting the ram eng. I hope he is right

Response From Discretesignals

I have a feeling the Ram's starter on the Durrango isn't going to work.

Response From teri Top Rated Answer

I need help with this problem as I stated before replaced an engine in a 05 dodge Durango with a 05 dodge ram 1500 same engine 4.7 all that was changed was the oil pan a suction pump and bolted to the trans ok now the starter activates but wont turn engine over tried switching starter from Durango to dodge ram it wont fit. hot battery and new starter applied

Response From kev2

you installed the 05 ram engine did the starter come with the engine?
you have NOT switched flywheels have you?

hopefully replacement engine was NOT a junk yard find-
I would confirm the dodge ram is what it was claimed to be- year model etc...

Response From teri

the dodge ram engine was purchases used on line they confirmed the year, model etc. it didn't come with a starter, I am using my old flywheel since it didn't come with one

Response From nickwarner

Before you play musical starters, have you tried putting a breaker bar on the crank pulley and seeing if this engine is locked up? Online can be a great place for deals but its also a great place for scammers to unload junk on people and take their money.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

So right Mr. Nick. Seller confirmed the thing so it must be right. Guess not huh?

T

Response From Discretesignals

Just curious, but what happened to the original engine? Did you have the same issue with the starter on the old engine?

Response From teri

the starter worked fine in old engine

Steering Gear Box

Question From smcvey on Steering Gear Box

HELP! Don't ask me how (but I do have a 17 year old son) but I need a new steering gear box on my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup. I have a friend that would be willing to tackle the job but he isn't sure whether the frame needs to be lifted for this. Anyone know the answer...I can't afford the $500 the shop wants to charge for it. My husband just lost his job and we have very little coming in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Response From re-tired

Here ya go . We're dying to know how he managed to destroy one.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Ram

  1. Place the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect the fluid hoses from the steering gear and cap the lines.
  3. Remove the coupler pinch bolt and slide the shaft off the gear.
  4. Matchmark the pitman shaft and arm and remove the arm.
  5. Remove the steering gear fasteners and remove the gear.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal.

NOTE The use of new mounting hardware is recommended. Alternately, use a medium strength thread-locking compound on the mounting hardware.
  1. Be sure to tighten all hardware to the proper specification.
  2. After adding fluid, carry out the power steering pump "Initial Operation" procedure.

Response From smcvey Top Rated Answer

He's not talking BUT the guy at the shop where I have it showed me where there was something that was bent and rammed into the gear box and when they pulled that out it left a hole. The mechanic said he must have hit something low that bent, whatever it was, and rammed it into the gear box. And I quote, "Mom, I didn't hit anything. I have no idea how that could have happened." WHATEVER! Like I wasn't 17 once. I cracked an oil pan and claimed I had no idea how. Running over a barricade will do that you know. Thanks for your help. I think my friend will be able to do it

2004 Dodge Ram 1500 - 5.7 Hemi Repair Advice

Showing 5 out of 7 Posts | Show 2 Hidden Posts
Question From Rom0no on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 - 5.7 Hemi Repair Advice

My 2004 Dodge Ram 5.7 Hemi originally had two broken bolts on the exhaust manifold. A mechanic "friend" owes me quite a bit of money in unpaid back rent for the shop he leases from me and offered to do the repair for the money owed. It took him over a month to fix the original problem (the broken bolts) then he came back and said he "discovered" coolant in the oil pan and he needed to tear it down again to replace the head gasket. Another month went by for that repair. Now the truck won't idle and he diagnosed the problem as bad fuel injectors. Another month goes by. After installing new fuel injectors the truck still won't idle. After scratching his head for two weeks he decided it must be a stuck valve and he has to tear the engine down a third time. So, three and a half months have gone by and he still isn't any closer to finishing. I've spent about $1,700 in parts and he has accumulated another $3,000 in unpaid back rent since he started the job and he doesn't seem to be any closer to fixing a problem the truck didn't have until he "fixed" the original problem.

I guess I'm asking could a stuck valve be the issue? To me it seems like a vacuum problem such as a hose installed incorrectly or bad gasket is a more reasonable explanation. Also, he assures me that three, four or even five months is a reasonable amount of time to spend on an issue like this. Any advice is appreciated.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

"Also, he assures me that three, four or even five months is a reasonable amount of time to spend on an issue like this. Any advice is appreciated."

What a mess! This is near impossible to put any credibility to mechanically. Friends, biz, the time extremes are plain messed up.

IDK - Doesn't seem it's going to be fixed by this person at all - right?
I think your option for fixing this is taking it some other place qualified and in biz ready to fix problems of the sort up to and including finding out what may have been really messed up tearing into it for a problem I'm not convinced it had??
Sure doesn't seem like there's a lot of motivation to hurry or fix this for you at all so probably cut loses and take it elsewhere and deal with $$ issues separately,

T

Response From kev2

I agree " so probably cut loses and take it elsewhere and deal with $$ issues separately"

Response From Hammer Time

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

You think your helping someone out because they are back on their rent. Must have been unable to pay his rent for some reason. Maybe because he stinks as a mechanic? He didn't pay his rent and then he screwed up your truck. You got it put in real deep.

All I can say is lesson learned on this one.

Here is a video on removing those broken exhaust bolts...little too late now, but maybe good for someone out there.
