Question From (:ksk:) on 1994 chevrolet giving me problems

I have a 94 chevy silverado stepside with the 4.3L vortech. It started acting funny a month or two ago, it would randomly die while idling or when getting on it. After it dies, it wont crank for about 10 minutes, then when it cranks u have too stay on the gas too keep it running. I changed the fuel filter, ran good for 2 days and started again, changed fuel pump, ran good for a week and is doing it again. Im stumped, i have people saying its sensors, relays, timing, idk what to think. it dies the most when you let off the gas to come to a stop sign, i just need her running right again so I can get to work.

Response From Hammer Time

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

the plugs and wires ar fairly new (3 months?) my older bro also pointed out something, in a streak of dumbness, i cut my muffler off and ran straights, it wasnt but a month after that the problems started, he said it could be the wrong amount of backpressure on my heads or something? I know nothing about this stuff, so i sound like an idiot.

Response From awall9891

If you crank the truck will it stay running at idle if it is in park/neutral and only shut off at idle when it's in drive/reverse?

Response From (:ksk:)

sort of, half the time it will crank and idle funny, and when i put it in gear it dies, then sometimes it will drive okay and when i let off at a stop sign or something it will die, then it wont start again.

failed emissions?

Question From netminderone on failed emissions?

I have a 1998 chevrolet 1/2ton pick-up with a 4.3 engine. my inspection failed emmisions with a 420 code. I bought a new cat. from parts america on 3-30-2007. it's a walker #50409. The warranty is 5 yr.. Parts America is out of business. My ? is, how can I get a replacement? I have all the receipts. thanks john

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Johnny; Once you get this warranty issue out of the way, you'll need to deal with what caused the cat to go bad in the first place. Cats don't die. They are killed.

Response From netminderone

Hi Loren, I'll tell you about the truck and tell me what you think. I bought it new, alway's took care of it,change oil every 2-3000 miles. It's a 4.3 4X4. I drive and work on the road so i pyle up the mileage. Only major problems was 3 fuel pumps went. It failed emmision's two years ago with 126,000 miles on her so I bought the new cat and passed. I think 3 times this winter, I got stuck plowing and it took a while to get out but got real hot like 250-260 then went back to normal. Could that do it? Also this winter when it snowed and when I went to start it, it wouldn't start. I thought it was the fuel pump again so had it towed to my mechanic. 3 day's he had it and couldn't find any problems but still didn't start. the forth day he went to work on it and it started right up so i drove it for about a month and the same thing happened. It was the wires-rotor-cap. I wanted plugs put in,he wouldn't do it because he said they would probably break. Truck runs great but could it be the plugs? truck has 195,000. put new plugs in with 66,000 7 yrs. ago. What do you think? have you ever heard of them breaking while taking them out? What do you do if one does break? Any help or suggestions?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

netmind; Yes, I'd replace the plugs. I don't live in a climate that we have to deal with rust and have never broken a spark plug off in the head, yet....If you are concerned, you could spray some lubricant around the base of the plugs with the engine cool, let it sit for an hour or two, then try removing them. Be sure to use dielectric grease on the spark plug boots when you go back together.
Now...the cat. The catalytic coverter is there to burn up unburned fuel coming from the engine if it is running poorly.
A good running engine doesn't need a cat to pass emissions. Any misfire, over or under fueling will take it's toll on the cat. That's why it is so important to address engine management problems immediately. You can take a poor running engine, put on a new cat, and it will more than likely pass, but the life of the cat is questionable at best.
It sounds like you've taken care of your truck or it wouldn't have lasted this long. One of the most common problems that I see with the 4.3s are running too cool. It is imperative that the engine runs at temp (200-220F). They are designed that way. It burns the fuel better, evaporates moisture in the crankcase, will actually get better mileage and the engine will last longer because it is more efficient.
Have a great weekend.

You can find the closest Walker distributor to get it taken care of.

Response From netminderone Top Rated Answer

Hi, thanks for the response. I looked up walker suppliers like you said and there all service stations or repair shops, not auto parts suppliers. All I want is to buy another cat., pay for it, then return the defective one from the store i bought the new one and get a credit. I am a delivery contractor for a major Automotive parts Co. in MA.. I can get the cat. from them but they are not a dealer on the list of distributers, Why does walker make you have to go to a service station? My Co. has major account's with direct-tire, meineke muffler, sear's,Midas ect.. I deliver walker cats. to all of them, all the time. Why can't they replace it and I'll pay for the labor? What can I do?

Response From Sidom

Talk to one of the shops on the list & see if they can warranty the cat if they do the install. You said you were ok with paying labor..... Some shops won't warranty a suppliers part unless they sell it but some might... You said you have the reciepts & if ya catch em on a slow day...............

Like I said, I deal with 50-60 garages a day. Labor ain't much anyway. Should I have one of them call walker warrenty to get a replacement?? I have all the receipts

Response From Sidom

Yea, that's kinda what I was getting at....If they deal with Walker, they might be able to warranty the cat for you & pay the install of course you would need your reciepts but you already have those. Keep in mind some shops even if though they sell Walker products might not warranty it unless they were the ones to sell it. But dealing with 50 to 60 shops I'm sure you could find one that would be able to help you out.......

Response From netminderone

Thanks Guy's. Monday I'll deal with it and let you guy's know what happened. Johnny

Response From Hammer Time

Nobody is going to pay you for any labor. Any labor warranty you had died wiith the company you bought it from. Find an auto parts store that deals with walker and they should be able to exchange it for you. If it's not Walkers policy to handle to warranty through wholesalers, then you'll just be out of luck.

1989 Chevrolet 1500 5.7 Running Rough, dies

Question From JesterzLaf on 1989 Chevrolet 1500 5.7 Running Rough, dies

1989 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado
Engine: 5.7
Mileage: 148k miles showing

Where do I start on fixing this. I haven't replaced anything yet, figured I'd get advice first rather than simply throwing possible parts at it to fix it.

Truck runs great driving normally. When I start it, sometimes it dies, and I have to give the gas pedal a pump to keep it running and it smokes alot at startup (seen smoke when pulling away from a light too). Then when I put it in gear, I have to give it gas to keep it running. At idle or at a light/stop sign, I can feel it running a little rough. I looked under the hood, and the EGR was bypassed, the firewall plugs for the heater hoses were bypassed, the a/c unit was removed (just bought truck yesterday). I didnt hear any obvious air leaking from vaccuum lines. It does have a small chrome breather I know I need to replace. I had parked it today at the revenue office and was in there about 30 minutes. I came outside and popped the hood when it wouldn't start, under the hood seems to be very hot (more than normal) but my temp gauge says I run between 160-210. 210 being the max it got to but dropped quickly and stayed down since. I covered the radiator with a rag and opened it, water wanted to spew out. Once I had it open, I dunno if it was because I slowly opened or if was really something else, but there were bubbles in the coolant. Best way to describe them would be like suds from soap lol. I put the radiator cap back on and it started after a couple cranks. It starts when cold, but after it is warm, it has a hard time starting. Being a new vehicle to me, I'll obviously be switching out spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, breather, oil, transmission fluid, trans filter, and flushing the radiator. Dropped by a friends shop and he said it could be the fuel relay. Then he seen the smoke when I started it and he said it might be something worse. The truck wasnt driven much lately before I bought it. It does have good power and take off. Runs smooth while driving. Thanks in advance for any assistance. If I need to give more info, lemme know and I'll get it to you asap. I looked through other threads and will certainly give a response as to the problems once resolved for others future problems.

Response From JesterzLaf Top Rated Answer

Update: did all those I mentioned before, plugs/wires/fuel pump relay/etc and still having problems. I followed the vacuum diagram and reconnected all the vacuum lines to where they need to go. The EGR diaphram is good. One new thing I noticed, the muffler looks like the pipe was shoved in in the front. When running, smoke comes out of both the muffler front and the end of the tailpipe. Maybe the exhaust is choking it? Friend is going to work that problem at the shop. When I started it up today, the truck idled kind of like with a lope, then leveled out and idled perfect. After a few minutes, it started loping again and eventually stalled after a few minutes of it loping. There is also a vacuum tree with one inelt behind the throttle body that was blocked off at the end of the hose. I looked at another truck, and instead of having the vacuum tree, it had a plug in that place.

Sorry, trying to be detailed as possible so I could get some help. I would just take it to a shop but I'm disabled veteran still fighting the VA for my benefits and barely staying afloat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Response From Hammer Time

First make sure you have no vacuum leaks, the EGR isn't sticking open from carbon and the EGR base plate isn't rotted out. Once all that is eliminated and you still have a problem, you may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Which 2?:the 87 chevrolet sprint turbo compared to a 92 GTI 16v and 87 Honda Civic DX

Question From Guest on Which 2?:the 87 chevrolet sprint turbo compared to a 92 GTI 16v and 87 Honda Civic DX

I have an option to buy back a car I sold just a month ago. I have been very regretful (OK, extremely) about selling it. I sold my 87 sprint Turbo that I had since 92. It had 188k but man did it run strong, never burned oil, and was not only a hoot to drive but easy to park and sipped gas.

It needed a switch for the headlights as they would occasionally shut off and I would need to switch them on again as they went out. The other thing is a new temp gauge switch as it no longer read temp. Seems they are pretty sheap repairs ot have done before I drive it out state though?

Trouble is, it is in San Jose CA where I used to live and I will need to registar it here in PDX OR where I live now. Not too big but I have a 92 GTI and a low mileage Civic DX from 87 to registar as well. New titles in OR will run $150 a car. 2 cars are fine. 2 are OK by the fiance as well. She is part of my wanting to tone it down to 2.

What 2 cars would you recommend holding onto? The Fun reliable 87 Turbo Chevy Sprint, a very well taken care of 92 VW GTI 16v that is also fun, or a rather dull but low mileage due to being towed behind my Grampa's motorhome 87 Carburated (I need to warm it up in the colder climate more than I did in CA) and Auto trans (read; SLOW) DX model Civic?

I already have a plane ticket for San Jose to get the Sprint on the 29th of NOv just next week and have arranged a payment to buy the Chevrolet Sprint back from the owner, a guy that bought 2 other Sprint Turbos he is fixing up (so he can cope with it going back to me).
I would need to drop it off to get the 2 switches at a mechanic, and I might want a basic tune up and possibly a general looking over before the 600 mile trip.

I could just visit. I have a lot of nervousness that it might be a car I will never find again. The turbos are very rare. They are also quite reliable. I had this one since 92 so I know a lot about where it has been in life.

Some history:
87 Sprint Turbo- New turbo, shocks, and clutch and distributor around 125k. Has functioing cc. New muffler, tires, front rotors, and cat converter all within last 6 months.
Needs: light and temp switches, r defrost doesnt work, a/c went (compressor) but I dont care.
What I like: Fun to fling around, steering is nice and light and tossable. The MPG. Fast. Tires cost little to replace. It is a neat and unique car and I find the exterior attractive.
Always 3k oil change.

87 Honda Civic DX-Automatic, A/C, 88k on car and over half those miles motorhome tow mileage, grampa bought it new in 87 and I received it last yr. A little knocking of steering wheel at stops tells me it might need brakes soon. The horn is inopperable and the fuse didnt seem to help.
What I like: history of one family owner that took good care of it. Runs very well. Doesnt need much to make nice.

92 VW GTI 16v- 167k. Had since 2000. New motor mounts, tune up, gear bushings, falken low profile tires and just about the whole cooling system (hoses, radiator, doghouse cooler). Has had the distributor recently replaced, axle, and wheel bearings. High performance TT exhaust. Neuspeed cam. Shift kit and Momo wheel are some of upgrades.
Needs: Buzz in stereo that matches idle (??), the headliner is drooping and needs to be replaced.
Always 3k oil change and has excellent compression

Question From DennyD on 2006 Uplander w/heavy clunk in rear passenger

2006 Chevy Uplander, 2.5l engine, 160k KMs

I have a heavy metal-on-metal clunk (sounds like a dead shock) in my rear of my 06 Chevy Uplander. Even the smallest of bumps cause the clunk. I put on new shocks and a new trackbar (both of which I was told was the problem). There are no struts on this model, just springs and shocks. There's nothing broken on the springs.

The only other thing I could think of are the control arm bushings but there's no play in them at all. I removed the spare tire and my storage area is empty. Also checked for play in the side and rear doors - all good. Any idea what is causing the sound, and more importantly, how to stop it?

Response From ebbbs

i had loud clunking noise left rear 06 uplander changed shocks didnt help changed control arm(trailing arm) bushings whalaa no more clunk!! bushing looked fine pre removal. old bushing was like butter in a vise compared to new one. used a 3/8 extension thru busing bolt hole could move old one around so easy new one barely moved 1/8 of an inch!!

Response From Hammer Time

Please read the FORUM RULES before posting. This question is nearly a year old.

Response From Hammer Time

This isn't the kind of problem that you are going to find on a forum. You are going to find it on a drive on ramp lift with someone listening while someone else works the car up and down.

Response From DennyD

Thanks for the reply. Sadly we've done that and we can't hear squat. Just thought that maybe someone here might have had the same issue or is a known problem.

Response From DennyD

Just as the 2nd TSB said to do, I loaded the back of the van (with my wife and 4 kids - 600lbs easy) and the problem was still there, loud as ever so it's not the 2nd TSB. They say the 1st one should be ignored now but it's the last thing I've not checked.

Imagine driving on a dirt road with no shocks. That's the sound I get. I think I bought a lemon...

Response From Hammer Time

These are the kind of things that we deal with every day and it's not rocket science to find the noise if it is load and consistent enough. Any decent tech should be able to pinpoint the noise.

Response From Hammer Time

It really shouldn't be that difficult to pinpoint if the noise is consistent. A set of chassis ears would be a lot of help.
