1988 dodge dakota V6 truck head gasket

Question From nikkifisher on 1988 dodge dakota V6 truck head gasket

I have a 1988 dodge dakota V6 2 wheel drive pickup truck. It is leajing water from just above the starter. (quit a bit I may add) is this caused by a blown head gasket or this the location of the freeze plug? if so could this leak be caused by a worn freeze plug? or is it a blown head gasket? I checked my oil after wiping the stick off and the oil appears to be fine.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

There are lot's of those so called "Freeze Plugs" and yes they can leak. You gotta see it to know. Dry off area, pressure test - whatever it takes.

Those plugs are NOT there for freeze protection but making the block when new. If you haven't used antifreeze the chances are higher they rust out. They rust 100 times more often then pop from freezing,

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

A head gasket is quite unlikely.
There are freeze plugs behind the starter and also on the back of the head which can be leaking. It can also be a leaking intake manifold gasket or a heater hose leaking on top of the manifold.
The best bet is to pressure test the cooling system so you can follow the leak to it's source. Use a small mirror if necessary.
Here's what the pressure tester looks like. Many of the discount parts stores will loan or rent one to you.

thanx to all of you who had replied to my problem. You have all been a great help and again thank you.

UH Hammer-----you forgot the picture.

Response From Hammer Time

Thanks Tom,
I didn't forget. I posted it as an attachment because I hadn't figured out how to get it into the body yet.
OK, I think I figured it out

It appears it still didn't take though

hard to say. I generally follow a leak to its highest point. The use of a black light helps here as well.

Question From 56spikes on 2000 ford V-8 van

Hi folks, I have a 2000 tritan v8 ford van with a leaking head gasket,Im no rookie I am 25 years in Jeep+ Dodge and a ASE master tech but I would like to know on a scale of 1 to 10 what kind of a job is this head gasket? Thanks for any help.

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Probably close to the same as a Dodge van with a V8. You should have no problems. Just remember to replace the head bolts. They are torque to yield.

Response From 56spikes

Hay-Way2,thanks for that info.this van belongs to a relative and 2 shops have turned it down so I was a bit gunshy.I did'n'tthink it looked that bad but you never know! All the brands have there little quirks ya know. And remember the thing that comes with age is the ultimate satisfaction of knowledge and sharing it with others! Thanks again,Paul T.

2002 dodge caravan cooling system

Question From darlayoung on 2002 dodge caravan cooling system

My 2002 Dodge Caravan started having cooling problems about 2 years ago. I changed the thermostat first...seemed to fix it, then about a year ago, it started overheating again. In the past year, I have replaced the water pump, the radiator, 2 thermostats, the top radiator hose, and a head gasket and I am STILL loosing coolant out of the overflow when it's filled to normal levels. I can drive it without it overheating because I check the fluid level almost daily, but I am loosing about a 1/2 a gallon of coolant every time I drive it for more than 30 minutes...what could be causing the pressure to push the fluid out of the overflow ?

Response From Hammer Time

You need to pressure test the cooling system to find where the coolant is going. You may still have head gasket issues. I don't know if the first job was done correctly.

Response From nickwarner

Has anyone bothered to pressure test the radiator cap to be sure it isn't blowing off early? HT is likely on the right track but sometime the little details are what gets overlooked and turn a mountain into a molehill.

Response From darlayoung

Thanks, guys...I'll try the radiator cap again...(I put a new one on it with a pressure release on it but maybe it is letting the fluid go too soon....on the original cap, the seal was torn up pretty badly when I replaced it...maybe it's as simple as that....if that doesn't work, I'll go have it pressure tested again....yehaw!

Response From nickwarner

If its as simple as a bad cap you should be happy for such a cheap fix. If the cap is fine I hope you've been putting in overtime. Thats the reality of your situation and unfortunately I'm with HT on this not fixing the issue unless proven otherwise by proper testing. I don't know what kind of shop you go to, but remember that the cheapest fix is almost never the least expensive one.

Response From darlayoung

I did the work on it (except for the head gasket) myself so I know everything but that was done right....some one told me that there is something to do with the transmission cooling system on the passenger side that MIGHT be causing the problem but I can't find anything on line or when I'm under it to check....any ideas on that one?
I'm off to the parts store to get a new radiator cap, right now.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The head gasket job is the part we are questioning. If the head wasn't checked out properly by a machine shop, they likely put it back together with issues.

I also notice you are referring to head gasket in singular. Unless this is a 4 cylinder engine, 2 heads should have been done.
