Fuel Pump and PCM on 2008 Pontiac Porrent

Showing 3 out of 3 Posts
Question From Torrent_owner on Fuel Pump and PCM on 2008 Pontiac Porrent

If the computer/power-train control module/PCM is shorted out, can that damage the fuel pump?

While the heater core on the vehicle was being repaired, the PCM was touched with a hot wire that fried out the computer.

The computer was replaced and the vehicle started several times after that.

Within 2 days the fuel pump went out.

Can that be related to the initial damage to the PCM?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

I agree. Shorting out the engine controller, how ever that was done, would cause damage to the delicate circuits on the PCB and not the fuel pump.

Curious..how was the fuel pump determined to be faulty?

Response From Hammer Time

Not likely at all.

Has anyone ever changed a fuel pump on a 2002 Pontiac?

Question From mark129 on Has anyone ever changed a fuel pump on a 2002 Pontiac?

I've read online that some cars you're able to change the fuel pump without dropping tha gas tank. They say that sometimes under the rear seats or under the trunk rug there is an acess panel and you can change the fuel sender without dropping the gas tank, has anyone ever heard of this? I don't have the car yet but I have to change the fuel pump on a 2002 Pontiac Starfire. Wasn't sure if that model car has a acess panel or if I'm going to have to pull the gas tank off......

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

My labor guide is showing 1.8 hrs, which means you'll have to drop the tank. Just my opinion, but I would advise you use a GM or Bosch fuel pump. The generic ones you can get at the discount parts stores just don't last.
Also, replace the fuel filter at the same time. (most warranties require this, anyway, but a plugged filter will cause a pump to burn up, as well as low fuel levels). Good luck.

Response From way2old

Yep, you gotta drop the tamk. Also ask about a new connector for the pump. GM had a TSB on certain models for the connector.

Question From stacie09 on 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix SE Starts then Dies?

Year of vehicle 2000, Pontiac grand prix se, engine size 3800, 150000 milage

Engine starts but then dies over and over, after letting sitt for a couple hours it will stay running for 3 mins then dies and will start and die immediately. Is this the fuel pump and if so does it need to be professonaly depresserized to replace?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Stacie; I'd want to do a bit more diagnosing prior to replacing the fuel pump. Have the fuel pressure tested. Any trouble codes stored? Check engine or service engine soon lamp illuminated?

Response From Hammer Time

Let me add one more thing to look at here.........

Is the security light on or flashing when this happens?

Question From troubledohc on 65 pontiac Startchief (young ricer owner needs help)

Besides from a lawn mower i don't mess with carburators to often. my grand pop bought this car in 65 he died in 1990. last time the car ran and was taged was in 96 . i got the car towed to me for my birthday .i slaped a battery in her tried to crank it (prolly a bad idea ) but i know im not getting gas .i can't find any information on this car where is the fuel pump located ? where is the filter located ? should the fuel pump buzz ? im going to throw fresh oil in her soon, but i need some kind of manual or a guru to help me out a bit. the car is a 65 pontiac starchief 389 2 jet rodchester carburator everything is original and im trying to avoid aftermarket (trying)

Response From Hammer Time

The fuel pump is mechanical and on the engine. You will likely have to replace the fuel lines from the tank as they get porous and the fuel pump will suck air. You may also have serious issues inside the fuel tank. You will have to remove it to find out.

Response From troubledohc

yikes i thought gas would keep everything clean .. what exactly is bad gas ? is it gas with moister ? or does it get gel like ? i was thinking seafoam but worried about seals ..

i wasn't getting anykind of gas going in the carburtator, so i dumped some fresh gas in the carburator seems like i was on the right track (wanted to fire up instead of just cranking over ).

tested for spark im getting spark from the distributor .is there like a .pdf or a manual anyone can pull for me ? i need some kind of mechanical map so i kno my way around this thing lol. and i can't find the fuel pump (unless it's under the car or in the tank)

and im not sure if it helps but i think they ran out the gas from the 90s it was stored in a garage sometimes under a tarp ..

im used to f/i 4 cylinders (it tells me what is wrong instead of goose hunting ) i need to just get it to start for now befor the restore (will be minor restore) and definitly having a fuel issue

Response From Hammer Time

The car hasn't run in 16 years. You can expect some serious deterioration to the fuel system

Response From re-tired Top Rated Answer

The price of GURU's has gone out of sight , so i found a source for manuals ....Pontiac Repair Manuals | Haynes, Chilton | The Motor Bookstore

I also ran across a freebee wiring diagram.....Pontiac wiring 1957-1965

Response From Discretesignals

You probably going to have to put a set of valve springs in it and make sure the valves aren't stuck in their guides.

Response From troubledohc

valves move good like i said it's in decent shape.. just bin sitting.. for the gas tank and fuel lines i should really look at.. it i guess i'll soak the carburator .new vaccumme lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, belts, what else u guys think ?

Response From Hammer Time

Soak the carburetor???????

Response From re-tired

"Soak the carb" You and the other "youngsters" havent heard of this procedure . You strip a carb down, removing all gaskets and soft parts. It is then placed in a tank of concentrated carb cleaner , about a hour it comes out spic and span . reassemble with new parts. And its ready to go.

Response From Hammer Time

Yeah, along with complete adjustment and setup during reassembly.

Response From re-tired

How hard could it be . you've seen one briggs&stratton ................Course this is a car so ya got to deal with tps and mixture control solenoid .

Response From Hammer Time

ya got to deal with tps and mixture control solenoid .

That wasn't more than a wet dream in '65

Response From Discretesignals

All it needs after you get it running is a sail. I wonder how many kids were conceived in the back of that car?

Response From re-tired

Tps ,mixture control , all mentioned in jest. Cutting edge technology in '65 was the 8 track and 16 channel CB. IF you were a wiz kid you had a linear amp and could skip all the way to NY.

Response From Hammer Time

115 ft tower with Moonraker 4 beam on rotary and 20w kicker.

Response From re-tired

HT , your a CB'er .Nice base unit .We ,my dad and I had a moonbraker 8 . The main problem with such a system was its size ,its huge . And the fact it was directional which a 40ft crank up tower and a rotory head solved both problems . We also ran a BIG STICK I think it was about 10-15 ft.

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, I had a Big Stick on top of the beam also.

Response From Discretesignals

How did this thread go from a Poncho sitting around in some barn somewhere to rednecks on CB radios? For some reason I can picture a 120 ft radio tower sitting on top of HT's house.

Redneck hedge trimmer...lol

Response From Hammer Time

Is that guy in the picture cutting the hedge? Now, that's imagination!

Yes, and the best part is we stood it up by hand all in one piece. The antenna itself was 40 feet across. We had about 10 guys and some guy wire and walked it upright from the roof of my house and set it into it's base. When I think about it now, we were crazy. There were poles and electric wires in front of my house.

1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question From tacmale on 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix that used to stall after driving for a while or if left idling. Replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, Ignition Control Module, plugs, wires, and fuel pump relay. Now it will start for about 3 seconds then just dies. Was wondering if it could be either the crankshaft or the camshaft position sensors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need to add when i run an obd check no codes show up.

I realized i did not give very good info, here is a list of things i have replaced or tested on the motor. It is a 3100 SFI I have to work in the open and live in Washington and have to do this between rain stroms.
Fuel pressure-good
Fuel pump relay-replaced
fuel pump-replaced
fuel pressure regulator-replaced
ICM-replaced
Plugs and wires-replaced
engine has spark and fuel or so it appears it wants to start afetr disconnecting the battery and leaving it sit to clear the memeory. Starts for just a few seconds then acts like the timing is off tries to start but backfires once in a while. But just cranks over, battery has full charge.

Response From steve01832

You should start with checking the fuel pressure with a guage. It is possible that the fuel pump relay is pulling in during key on engine off but may not be getting a signal after the engine fires causing it to die. Key on engine off fuel reading should be around 35 psi. If this is ok then start the engine and let it stall. Check the guage. If it is holding at 35 psi the fuel delivery is ok. If the guage is way down, check for spark at the plugs and check for injector pulse by installing a noid light into one of the injector connectors. If there is no spark and no injector pulse, replace crank sensor. If there are different symptoms, post back with the results and we can go further.

finally got some dry weather to work in i got no fuel pressure when it placed my gague on it. I have replaced the fuel pump relay and the fuel pressure regulator and a new fuel pump. Still no pressure reading. I tried squirting gas in thru the throttle body but even that didnt start it.

Response From tacmale

Went to check the crankshaft position sensor which on the 3100 sfi v-6 is located on the firewall side of the engine. I noticed the wire way down looked burned. Got a light and sure enough the clip holding it had come loose and the wire had fallen on the exhaust and burned thru. Simple fix, just had to rotate the motor and get at the sensor from the front of the engine. Thanks for all the help guys got me going in the right direction.

Response From whitey79

i assume its a quad 4? my lil sister had one and i had to replace the cps, and the plug wire assembly(sorry i forgot what the deal is called the holds the plug boots. i cleaned it also). the camshaft position sensor was a real pain in the rear to replace. i would reccomend doing it in a garage. if you have to.
