94 Cadillac Turns Over but wont start

Question From MrMustang93 on 94 Cadillac Turns Over but wont start

Im trying to help my grandfarther sell his cadillac its a 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 5.7L 170k Miles. Its been sitting up at least a year. It wasn't nothing wrong with it when he parked it he just bought a new car and parked this one. so now were having a hard time starting it. We've replaced the Fuel Pump Relay and Fuel Filter and it still wont start. The car will crank and run if you spray starter fluid in the intake. If you do that it will crank right up on the first turn and will run until the starter fluid runs out and once it runs out it just turns over. We thinking it might be the fuel pump but i was wondering if there are other things we can diagnosis before we go dropping the tank. any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

You may have a bad fuel pump but you need to verify power and ground arriving at it first while monitoring a fuel pressure gauge.

Response From MrMustang93

there is some wires that coming from the top of the tank. the wires from the tank has a male plug type thing on it and the other has a female type plug on it. I unplugged and I was wondering if I took a test light and stuck it in the female plug will that tell me if im getting power or not?? I can't tell if the wires are actually coming from the pump itself unless I drop the tank but it looks like tey are

Response From autojoe

leave connector connected and hook test light to a good ground......i run a jumper from negative battery terminal then touch test light to positive battery terminal to test and light should light.....now pierce the gray wire or unplug connector and touch the terminal where the gray wire goes and turn key to on position the test light should light for 2 seconds and then go out the have soneone crank engine and test light should light while cranking.

Thanks for all the help guys I know alot of people don't get back on here and say if your suggestions is what fixed the problem so I thought I would. It turned out to be the fuel pump, I took the test light and touch one of the wires I forgot which one and it lit up I went and bought a new pump spent all day puttin it in and just cranked it for the first time about 15 mins ago and it started and ran on the 2nd attempt. I sit there and let it run for about 10 mins so everything seems to be fine. Thanks again.

Response From Hammer Time

Thanks for the feedback.

Response From MrMustang93

how do I check to see if the power and ground is good?

Response From Hammer Time

Use a test light at the tank with a helper to operate the key.

Cadillac fuel sending unit wiring diagram

Question From Cadillac_Man on Cadillac fuel sending unit wiring diagram

I have a 1990 Cadillac Sedan Deville with a 4.5L V8. I recently pulled the gas tank to clean the fuel pump and in the excitement of gas pouring everywhere forgot to unplug the sending unit from the wiring harness. It pulled all the wires out of the plug, now i cant figure which wire goes where in the plug. Any help will be appreciated preferably a wiring diagram for the sending unit.

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

I can only find a partial diagram for this. Terminal b houses the gray wire. G houses the black wire. These are for the fuel pump.

Please don't create another thread on the same subject. That just creates confusion in the forum. Respond in your original thread:

my service engine and service car soon light comes on and off.and when they do my car strarts backfiring then missing even cut off but.but when the light cuts off its run smooth again.i just put a new fuel pump and even had a tune up done on it and a new fuel injector put on it can u tell me what the problem is?

Response From micahharlow

Im having the same problem, I was told it was a PROM CHIP and ECD. I bought one but it had three hookups and the one I took out from behind the glove box only had 2. There was another small box right next to the main one but the insert didnt fit into the the third slot of the new one. Not sure when I buy one from autozone, the ecd should be taken care of .....is the prom chip in that small box? HELP

Response From Double J

Stop at Autozone and have the computer scanned for the trouble codes.
They do it for free.
Then post them and someone should be able to help from there

Response From smilocc

they said they have to be 97 on up to put on the computer they was my first option

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Ok: Count the pins in the connector. Caddies can be funky. It could be either a 12 pin or 16 pin connector. If 12 pin I have a chart for the codes you can get yourself with a paperclip - AYOR. I don't have the one or chart for 16 pin job.

12 pin jobs was just counting blinks of the check engine light which went in series of three times each the first was indicating that the puter was ok to talk to you or not. Don't be jumping things quite yet - let's get some info from these guys especially as it's a Caddy! Some of those you could hit certain buttons for assorted controls you already have and get codes I think??

Response From Double J

Thats too bad..my Autozone has both type scanners and will pull codes for these too.
Try this procedure...see if it works......

A.) Turn the ignition switch on ( B) Depress the OFF and WARMER buttons on the climate control panel at the same time until the segment check appears on the instrument panel.(C) Once the service mode is entered , any trouble codes that are stored in the computer memory will be displayed. Write down everything that appears...
TO CLEAR CODES A. Press the HI button on the climate control panel, this will cause the display to read ECM DATA. B. Press the LO button on the climate control panel until the display reads ECM CLEAR CODES. C. Now press the high button on the climate control panel and the display should read ECM CODES CLEAR. C. After 3 seconds all stored ECM codes will be erased.

Let us know if it works.
