Question From Guest on brakes rotors (1999 kia sophia)

can someone please tell me how to take off front rotors
any help would be greatly appreciated!
and thanks for the help with the 1993 pontiac grand prix blower heater it worked out great!!

thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Looks like it's held on with a #3 phillips head bolt and should use an impact driver which will help it not stripping or breaking it. See this link where I just found that info.... http://www.autozone.com/N,14400854//shopping/partTypeResultSet.htm

wheels

Question From Rdpuchall on wheels

I have a 99 pontiac sunfire. I had the front brakes done on May 29th. Only drove the car on local roads at fairly low speeds until three weeks ago when I started a new job and started traveling on Parkways and turnpikes at higher speeds. On July 2 while driving 55 miles per hour my right front wheel just rolled off. Dealer says it is not his fault. There is some rust on the rotor.

Please advise.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

I’m not going to take sides on this one because things like this are usually a no win situation for all that are involved.
All I will say is that the dealer’s choice of excuse is not a valid one. If there were dirt, rust, corrosion anything on the mating surfaces of the rim and brake rotor. Why wasn’t it cleaned during the course of the repair???
Like what Tom said they may have properly tightened the wheel but if there were foreign material on the mating surfaces it will allow the wheel to eventually work itself loose. It has happened to me.
On the other hand your vehicle has not been under lock and key for the last month now has it.
Some people will attempt to steel the pennies off of a dead mans eyes. Who’s to say that this wasn’t what happened; that someone was attempting to steel your wheel didn’t succeed but left the wheel nuts loose???
I know it sounds far fetched but it happens and if you decide to take this further; you are going to have to prove that it didn’t.
Like I said no win situation; just be thankful that no one got hurt. Go and talk to the dealership again and see if they’ll help with any of the damages. Shake hands and add this to one of your life’s experiences.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Scary!! If front rotors and hubs have rust then tightening the wheel could be against rust flakes and NOT truly tightened but that about always makes the brakes shake when applied. I'm guessing that the lug nuts fell off but you didn't say.

It's a mechanic's nightmare to make sure things are right before you get the car back. Generally right side wheels don't fall off as the rotation of the wheels tends to make the lug nuts tighten. The used to make reversed threaded lug nuts for the left side of many cars for just that reason.

It's not impossible for a right to fall off but much less likely. The problem probably belongs to the last person to have the wheel off but near impossible to prove.

I do know of someone who did win in court over something like this.

Certainly check all wheels now if you are running again, T

sqeaking and clicking

Question From Pyrcide on sqeaking and clicking

1998
Pontiac Grand Prix SE
3.8
170k

Well It's been awhile, I'm back. For those of you who don't remember I had the bad intake manifold, and thanks for the help diagnosing. Turns out not long after that, my engine threw a rod bearing (not surprising after all the coolant it burned). So after It sat it my garage for 8 months, I finally had a used engine put in it.
On to the new. I just replaced the both front tie rods and brakes pads last weekend. My rotors are shot, bad. I'm going to do them this weekend. Anyway, I made a sharp corner a couple days ago, and heard a loud thump front passenger side. Ever since then, the front passenger side area (wheel area) makes a hard clicking (or thumping) when turning and a sporatic sqeal just when driving straight. Everything I can think of points to the CV axle. I pushed up and down on the front to test the struts, and no sqeaking. Anybody disagree with the CV axle being the issue. Let me know thanks.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Welcome back

Hmmm? Just doing pads on bad rotors may account for the squeaking noise. IDK about this loud thump? Were brake pads securely in place and the caliper? Enough miles for some more than just the rotors and carefully inspect your new pads as they don't like it not being done together.

CV joints frequently make a crackle, or like pop corn popping when you turn and accelerate from a stop is a good clue that they are bad but don't usually make noise straight ahead at first. If a boot is torn and spewing grease the shaft really should go and even if not CV joint life is unknown to me. Some go, some go on forever. I've seen one without warning just snap too.

After you are convinced of the noise and do or have the work done do get a real alignment which should include a complete check of all the parts that could wear out or disallow a proper alignment. Do your best to check wheel bearings too. Good luck,

T

Response From Pyrcide Top Rated Answer

Thank you for the advice, but I can assure you this noise is not the brake rotors. Yes they are are shot, they have been for some time, yet this noise is quite severe. I just bought rotors for my car 3 hours ago, they will be put on by saturday evening. I had an 89 grand prix, in which, the axle collapsed into the rim, ruined both. I'm just checking all my points, before I go sinking money into the wrong problem, and once again your advice is very much appreciated, thats why I post here, I hope any advice I can give, will do the same... Thanks again

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This is tough to know exactly what by a web forum so it needs everything inspected at the age and miles. If need be get a shop to diagnose it and you can still do the work,

Car steering shakes when using breaks

Question From greencandyjane on Car steering shakes when using breaks

-2005 grand am Pontiac

2 months ago my front drivers side wheel came off while I was driving. There was no body damage but I skidded into mud and the threads where the wheel attaches were trashed. So I had a mechanic replace the part that has the threads that holds the tire on, I think its called a hub but i honestly have no idea. So It drives fine now but I noticed that it was acting weird when I took it on the highway. When I slow down you can feel the breaks in the steering wheel. The steering wheel rattles back and forth a little when I use the breaks. It feels as if all the breaks are working except the one that had the wheel problem in the past but I have no idea.

I was wondering if maybe it was just dirt stuck in the breaks still or if something is just really messed up. Also Im very paranoid about the wheel flying off again while I drive. Is there a possibility this will happen again?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

I hope I never know of leaving a wheel loose. You must have bent or damaged the brake rotor and only a new set (set both sides done equally) is the fix.

What ever situation left you with a loose wheel needs to be addressed. Mistakes happen, that one needs full attention,

T

Response From greencandyjane

thank you so much for your help!!! The reason the wheel came off was fixed but I will get the rotors and breaks looked at and replaced.
