Dodge caravan can't remove axle

Showing 3 out of 3 Posts
Question From 3fingerrick on Dodge caravan can't remove axle

I am trying to remove the axle from the steering knuckle and I can't turn the knuckle far enough to remove the axle eventhough I have removed the ball joint. Do I have to pull the bottom ball joint as well and is there pressure on that joint from the front spring? Chilton's book does not tel me. I am trying to remove the engine and need to remove the axles to pull the transmission with the engine.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

Lorens right, you can lose 2 fingers doing that way.......lol There is alot of pressure require to pull the lower con arm down far enough to get the stud out of the knuckle (easy part) and then to put it back in ( hard part).
.
.
Another way would be to remove the 2 strut bolts & let the knuckle fall forward. The con to doing that way would be you would have to get an alignment afterwards

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

rick; Hope you didn't lose two fingers while you were doing this. Yes, seperate the lower ball joint. You'll need to remove the brake caliper and support it, first. (don't let it hang by the brake hose)

Question From bendover on 2005dodge dakota 6 cyinlinder 81000 miles

when I start up truck while in park I turn the wheel to the left and it makes a weird sound and back to the right.drive down the road and turn left and I hear that noise while im turning left.i had a mechanic look at it and he said that the ball joints had lost their greese packing and they are dried up and that's causing the noise, what do you think?

Response From Hammer Time

Typical Dodge truck............... Replace the ball joints.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

Very well possible, and if its making noise the ball joints likely need to be replaced. If they are left in there running metal on metal they will eventually come apart without much warning and you will lose all control over you steering and hit whatever is in front of you along with doing major damage to other suspension parts

2005 Dodge Magnum - Front end noise

Question From craigferris on 2005 Dodge Magnum - Front end noise

2005 Dodge Magnum se

A clunking noise occurs in the drivers side front wheel well when going over small bumps such as pot hole repairs. There is no other trouble, steering and alignment seem fine. There is no noise at all when going over smooth surfaces. I took off the left front wheel and inspected the area, nothing appears to be broke or loose.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

Have same problem with my 05 RT. i had a similar sound with my old explorer and that turned out to be the stab link. was fairly obvious as it had sheared in half. Had the tire off on the magnum and all seems fine. Suspecting something with the ball joints.
has anyone tried replacing the ball joints and did it work?

Response From Sidom

I've had some Chrysler's with bad sway bar mounting bushing. They didn't look oblonged, cracked or bad in any way but they were giving a clunking noise over bumps. To verfiy I took the bushing off, flipped it around backwards & put it back on the sway bar and the noise was gone.

It that is the case for you replace the bushings both of them, don't leave it that way.

No prob there Tom.... Loren's got my back on this one & explained to me the "procedure".

He said to just go in & order, they'll "pretend" to not know what i'm talking about. Then I do the secret code, I believe he said the chicken dance & bark, then they'll hook me up

Oh yea,,, double shot expresso, here I come.... You guys need anything????

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I can just picture Loren heading out to the parts store with his chicken suit!

2004 Stratus making ginding noises

Question From lmfallert on 2004 Stratus making ginding noises

We bought a 2004 Dodge Stratus a month and a half ago and now it's making grinding noises when we turn to the left. It sounds kind of like a creaky door hinge. It's a V-6 with 42840 miles. We brought it in and they said that the lower ball joint and control arm needed to be replaced. Is that true?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

There's nothing like being there to know for sure.
The assembly looks like this........

This could be the source of "creaking" noises but less likely
to cause "grinding" noises IMO. Grinding seems more like brake,
bearing or CV joint issues. All need to be known good,

Question From lazyrebel on 01 Dodge 2500 4x4 5.9l

Have a 01 Dodge 2500 4x4 with a bad steering problem. Have replaced steering box, and was told that ball joints were ok. Truck is hard to steer weaves alot. What do i need to check next?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

All front end parts need be known good. If a steering box is not put on properly and on center it would act weird. Can't say what happened in this case but this stuff needs be done with the tech know how which may be lacking??
