2003 Jeep Liberty stalls out

Question From Spanky on 2003 Jeep Liberty stalls out

Hi, have a 2003 jeep liberty 3.7 V6 Start up and then shuts down. Finally got it to stay running but runs rough now. Any solutions? Engine light won't go off either.

Response From Discretesignals

Was there any recent repair work done to this? Can you give us a little bit of history before this problem started or what lead up to it?

Response From Spanky Top Rated Answer

No there wasn't. Well yes, I did some hose replacements around the air filter and fuel injector. That's what I got from the code readout I got. Engine light still on. I haven't checked the hose yet around the fuel tank area. Nasty weather now and trying to wait for some good weather to lay under and check there.

Response From Hammer Time

There are no codes that tell you to replace or repair any specific component. They merely inform you of something that occurred in a specific circuit and it's up to the tech to determine what the cause was. You need to post the specific code numbers being set now.

Response From Spanky

Hi. I got the code. it's P0442. Help if you can thanks.

Response From Hammer Time

That code has nothing to do with vacuum leaks or even engine performance in any way.

Response From Spanky

So what does it mean? I read most things about it and it could be about anything to do with the emissions from the car. Including the gas cap. I replaced it and it still stays on.

Response From Hammer Time

The fuel tank and all it's lines are an air tight system to prevent fuel vapors from going into the atmosphere and yours has a small vapor leak

Response From Spanky

Ya, I know. But the thing is where? I'll try by the gas tank where the charcoal canister is and some lines. This is just blowing my mind trying to find a small vacuum leak! Kinda wish it was a big leak! then I could probably find it. Thanks Hammer Time. Hope santa was good to you and your family!! Happy New Year bro!

Response From Hammer Time

One more time...................

This is not a vacuum leak and it is not effecting the engine operation in any way so if you have a driveability problem, look elsewhere.

Response From Spanky

OK thanks. I'll check it again and give you the code. I don't have the jeep with me today at work. Thanks for your help.

Response From nickwarner

Get the codes read and post the exact code numbers. Thats the first step to figuring this one out.

Response From Spanky

Yes I did. Said it was a small vacuum leak problem. I checked some hose's around the intake and air filter. I found some dry rotted hoses and replaced them. The engine light still stay's on.

Question From mightybowl on 90 jeep cherokee

i have a 1990 jeep cherokee with the 4.0 inline six that will not start it has been sitting in my drive way for about six months i parked there it was running fine i have the battery out now charging it but i tryed to jump it and it was like it was not getting gas even know i know that there is gas in it (new air filter and gas filter right before i stopped driving it) i pulled the gas line off just past the filter and gas came out so i dont know

Response From dmac0923

does the engine crank and just not turn over?

if it cranks, are you getting spark? fuel?

try spraying a small amount of starter fuild in the intake while someone is trying to start the engine. it the engine catches and then dies, your not getting fuel.

im not sure if your year jeep is fuel injected or TBI. if its TBI you might have some gummed up remains of fuel blocking the passages.

Response From mightybowl Top Rated Answer

it tunes over but dosnt start. i did put starter fluid in the in take and it when then choked out so it is getting spark and i am pretty sure its fuel injec. but i have never heard of the other and it has fuel injectors so if that help

Response From dmac0923

TBI Throttle Body Injection. looks like a cross between a carburetor and the new models throttle body.

Response From mightybowl

no its fuel injection

Response From Tom Greenleaf

No matter what type of fuel injection for now it simply isn't getting fuel. Fuel pressure test would help. If this was left for six months with less than half a tank I'd worry about moisture in the gas now too.

Gas is not very stable IMO as I have pronounced problems with seasonal equipment that wasn't a problem many years ago. Strange additives being used now,

T

Response From Double J

Not a real Jeep guy but I do know and have fixed a couple a 4.0 L by replacing the Crankshaft position sensor..
These are very common failures...
And they do start the fuel pump /injector circuit..From what I understand....
Located on the bell housing of the trans ,drivers side....Pain in the *** to replace on 4x4 models...

Just a thought...Let us know.....

Question From tejas on 2005 jeep cherokee/stumbles

2005 jeep grand cherokee.....4.7 engine....engine stumbles after it comes to a stop.....i have to put in netural and keep it running for 10 seconds then its okay...I have no engine codes... Has new air filter, and i have cleaned the injection body...This car has only 30,000...miles and is in great shape. Can anybody give suggestions.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

tejas; The IAC controls the idle speed. Although it only has 30K miles on it, it is very possible that the injection system is dirty. In most cases, the IAC can be removed, and manually cleaned.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited HELP PLEASE!

Question From Guest on 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited HELP PLEASE!

Ever get that buzzing noise in your ear sometimes? Well thats what my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited sounds like when you step on the gas pedal...but when you let off the gas pedal it isnt as bad, it also does this on cruise control, a very annoying noise...I just got the vehicle too, PLEASE HELP! Thanks

Response From Guest

Does anyone know if this is related to the front wheel bearings? Right or left side? or both? Sounds like it is coming from the left side of the Jeep...what do u think?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Wheel bearings would usually give a growling sound or feeling. I wouldn't describe it as a buzzing noise. They tend to be sensitive steering more than acceleration. If worried about that get it checked.

If you feel safe I bet this noise is a problem with the air cleaner assembly but it's only a guess as about anything is without actually witnessing it, Give it a look for it's integrity and any splits that may act like a reed valve with air speed, T

Response From Guest

I might be able to describe the sound a little better and maybe you can help me...You know when you get new tires, and you get that feeling of the new tires on the road? thats what it sounds like...still think it may be the air cleaner assembly? and where is that located? Thanks.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

The air cleaner assembly as I called it is everything to do with the air intake including the air filter. Some snorkel way away from the actual engine intake of air.

The days of one wing nut is history. The air comes in thru lots of stuff now to maximise performance and reduce dirt to air filter if possible but they can have lots of duct work. Many even sense atmopheric pressure to inform the vehicle's computer as to what to do as far as fuel and timing etc. are concerned.

This Jeep may be simpler than I said but still it takes in air and does it faster upon accelleration. It also exhausts and that could be the noise. Less likely but it happens. Noises are funny and are hard to describe and locating them can be hard.

________________________________________________

Of interest: I spent hours with a limosine company car that made a buzz/whistle noise at a certain speed so obnoxious they almost couldn't use the car for customers! Found that one and it was an Asian windshield replacement that didn't fit well and made the noise. This on an American car.!! I don't have a problem with that but it didn't fit!! Hey, that was air speed NOT throttle but what a pill to figure out, T

Question From hate cars on jeep help

i have been trying to help a freind with his 98 jeep grand cheeroke with a code 1494 it has to do with a pump for the EVAP system and i cant find it. another friend has a tranny shop and he has alldate and it shows the pump too be on the l/f inner fender next to the air filler houseing its not there and doent look like it ever was..

Response From Double J

I searched and cannot find a decent component locator.
i know a call to the dealer parts dept can usually help.i have had success with this, cause the technicians are usually sitting in there and if the parts guy can't tell ya,he will ask a tech.

stupid question, vehicle wasn't in and or repaired from an accident was it....maybe part wasn't replaced....stupid i know ,but have ran across this with other parts....just throwing it out there...

good luck

JIM

Response From hate cars

see my posting i fix the can and i just want to thank you.

Response From way2old

Thank you for your fix post. We all learned something new with the 1 year thing. Thanks again for posting, now I know JIM N will sleep tonight.

Response From Double J

I'm nocturnal...

which is why i usually take jobs that i have to crawl under......
catch up on some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's

Response From way2old

Have you looked all over the left fender? The manufacturers have a way of hiding the parts. I have the same picture you describe and it just shows left front fender. It might be under the air box. Mine seems to show it to be close to the radiator cross support. Here is my location.

Response From hate cars

just to fill you in found the problem. the computer was changed i think with a 97 to 96 year. Those years have the pump 98 is a one year think lucky me. So i added the pump cheaper then the computer. So i want to thank you and Jim for the help.

Response From hate cars Top Rated Answer

way2old i followed the hoses from the gas tank to the sensor ( the top one in the picture) to the carcoal canaster
and at the intake so i don't think that i could be something under the air filter houseing but its true they do like to
hide parts in funny or should i say dumb spots. Thanks again for the help..

Response From hate cars

i was thinking the same. i had the jeep last week and am going to look at it again this week.
thanks for the idea am also going to the junk yard to check on another 98... why is it that
problem on certain cars are a one year only build. i always work on them. lol
i do this on the side i was a tech. at a garage long time ago and stopped doing
it cause it sucks good money but people and cars just suck. Now i just work on family
and friend cars to help them out great web page. Thanks again
