Question From richbopp on 2004 Acura MDX - Air Filter

Where is the air filter on my 2004 Acura MDX V6? How do I get at it to change the filter?

Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I can't know every car ever made but it's basic. Follow any snorkling from intake and there should be a square or maybe round item that will come apart and house the filter. Some need to have something else moved to get at it but most are straight forward.

I will suggest to really try to not unplug electrical stuff if at all possible, You'll find it, T

Response From richbopp Top Rated Answer

This is driving me nuts. I've been working on cars for my whole life. Have a vintage Vette in my shop and was raised by my auto mechanic Dad. So I'm not new to the under the hood stuff..... but this thing is no where to be found. Off to the dealer tomorrow to see where they hid it.

Tom, thanks for the info. I'll post the location when I find it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Thanks for posting what you find. We are all in this together and some cars like to hide things.

I was shocked to find a car's battery under its back seat once!! -- and nothing other than a Rolls put it in the trunk?? It could go on forever, spare tires put in the engine compartment by Fiat, and things like that. T

Response From Guest

I just remembered that a neighbor works for Acura dealer and drove over to his house. He gave me that look, like I was crazy and lifted the hood, opened the filter compartment and went....."Holly sxxx..... there's no air cleaner in there.:

I was sure that the box with the screws on it as part of the in line air intake was supposed to be where it was found, but guess what. This car has no air filter in it. We bought it new, have had dealer service from day one. Looks like a factory slip up....

I was first to open the box becasue it has a factory seal (kind of a sticker) at the seam that I had to break to get ito the box earlier today.

Oh well, at least I know it's "supposed" to be.

Thanks.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Thanks for the report. I've never seen a car without an air filter. Silly lawn mowers even have them. Boats do NOT but use spark arrestors that would still stop a leaf or large item.

If somehow a car can be made without one on purpose I'm confused. Good grief a car may live in Shangri La but many still have to deal with dusty roads and the makers all know that.

I'm shocked about this and Acura is NOT some no name car. Please let us and the world know what happens with this, T

Question From Guest on acura integra gas mileage

Hello. My 1999 Acura Integra should get at least 30 mpg highway. I have only been getting 21 mpg since I purchased it a couple years ago. What could be the reasons for such drastic difference in mpg? Air filter, tire pressure, fuel injector cleaner, have all been considered. Thanks for any help.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

According to fueleconomy.gov 21 mpg is your average city mileage 29mpg highway. Your will only get 29 mpg if you drive under 60 mph. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and hard braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/1999_Acura_Integra.shtml

1996 Acura TL not getting gas when started

Question From offray on 1996 Acura TL not getting gas when started

1996 Acura 2.5 TL
180k miles

When trying to start the car it isn't pumping the gas through like it is clogged, and is quickly getting worse. It starts off only lasting a couple seconds, and after fiddling with it from anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour you can finally get the car to stay on. If you can manage to start the car enough and get gas pumping, it eventually runs perfectly fine. The problem only occurs when the car has sat for a few hours. This last time a friend only got the car to stay on at all to get gas pumping by periodically pouring a little gas into the air filter and running the cars on the fumes.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Test for proper fuel pressure and that it holds first. Code reading could be helpful too,

1988 Acura Legend won't start! Help!!!!

Question From kindermom on 1988 Acura Legend won't start! Help!!!!

I'm so frustrated! I have a 1988 Acura Legend V6 2.7 with no start. It is cranking with the starter clicking, but no start. We have checked battery and terminals, new plugs and wires and checked for spark. Fuel pump is working, no visible air clogging and air filter is good. all the fuses look good and test out fine. Prior to this we had some trouble starting it, but as long as we kept the gas pedal down it would usually start with some black smoke out the back. We had an overheating issue and fixed a leak in the radiator and we were in the process of finding the solution to the cooling fans not working, but now it won't start at all and that is now the problem at hand. I'm out of ideas and money to spend on this car, so any suggestions are welcome. I have had 4 mechanics advice to get this far and now running out of ideas! Please help!!!!!!!!!

Response From Hammer Time

It is cranking with the starter clicking, but no start.

That is a conflicting statement. Is the starter cranking the engine over or not?

Response From kindermom

It is cranking, but unable to turn over to start. I'm not a car person so I'm not sure of the terminology. we checked if it was the starter, but it was clicking so I was told it was not the starter.

Response From Hammer Time

Cranking and turning over mean the same thing. It means the starter is engaging and turning the engine and doing it's job but the engine just isn't firing.

Response From kindermom

Okay, so if it's not firing. I read your post about checking the basics and they have all been checked and everything looks good, so what do I turn to next?

Response From Sidom

Just to eliminate some of the confusion here. It might be a good idea to go down the list, tell us what the readings were you got on those tests and a quick note on how you performed the tests.

Reason being if the tests weren't done with the right tools you may have confirmed a bad part as being good. Using a screwdriver to check for spark or listening to a fuel pump will confirm a total failure but will pass a marginal part as good that is in fact causing a no start.

Sounds like there may be a few things going on here but the 1st thing we need to find out is what is missing....If it's not starting, then there is definitely something missing....

I really appreciate your imput. My mechanic is unable to be here today, but I pulled the fuse to the ECU and the cable to the battery and waited 10 min. , once I put everything back it started right up. I turned it off and went to change clothes, approx. 10 min and went out and it would not start. So I'm just a woman trying to do this for myself and I've been told by the auto parts store that my ECU may be bad. Is that the problem? I don't have the capability to get it to the auto place to get a diagnostic machine on it. I'm unsure if I should just give up.

Response From Hammer Time

It's going to take a lot more than a drive to the auto parts store to confirm a bad ECM. First off, not one of those parts clerks has a clue how to diagnose a bad ECM or even a "no start" condition. The first thing you have to do is run every one of the tests I listed in that procedure and then and only then can you have any idea where to look for your problem.

PS, If you really did have a bad ECM, you car would have failed more than one of those tests so somebody needs to start doing some accurate testing.

Response From Hammer Time

No, that would pretty much be impossible. If it had all those functions it would be running.

Response From kindermom

I understand. I guess then we need to go and check the basics again to make sure!! Thanks for you help! Just one more question! If the catalytic converter is clogged could that be a cause?

Response From Hammer Time

It would cause it to have no power but it wouldn't prevent it from starting.
With the previous overheating history, I would really look at the compression close.
