1997 Isuzu Rodeo overheating

Showing 4 out of 4 Posts
Question From rooster03 on 1997 Isuzu Rodeo overheating

As soon as the temp gauge starts climbing, it won't ever drop back down. I replaced a faulty water pump about 6 mos ago, and just replaced the thermostat today. Both radiator hoses are hot to the touch, but all the steam is coming from the engine side vs the radiator side. Once the engine cools I need to check to see if there's any seepage from the water pump, but I'm out of ideas after that. From engine startup to max temperature takes less than 5 minutes. Any help or ideas would be great, and thanks in advance.

Response From Hammer Time

but all the steam is coming from the engine side vs the radiator side.

Steam? .................You shouldn't have steam anywhere.

Response From rooster03 Top Rated Answer

Well, as opposed to the boiling coolant coming out the radiator valve, it all seems to be coming out from the engine side of things. It's definitely coolant by the smell, and my fear is that I've blown a seal/warped something that is letting coolant out/air in.

Response From Hammer Time

You're not making a whole lot of sense. You need to start out by having the cooling system pressure tested to find any leaks.

overheating when idling or up hills

Question From carriejj on overheating when idling or up hills

my 1990 Isuzu trooper wants to overheat when idling or going uphills, but is fine everywhere else. It's been doing this for about 2 years and has recent new radiator and hoses, water pump, timing belt, and spark plugs. any ideas? thanks

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

I agree with Tom have the thermostatic rad fan clutch tested. It sounds to me that there is not enough airflow through the rad at times to cool the engine.
These fan clutches are designed; that at low RPM and/or high temperature the clutch locks up and drives the fan blades as fast as the engine is turning; drawing lots of air across the rad fins. This also takes a far bit of power for the engine to drive the fan; lowering performance and fuel mileage.
When you’re cruising down the highway under light load there is enough air flowing through the rad to keep the engine cool. At that point the clutch relaxes and allows the fan to free wheel. Giving the power to drive the fan back to the rear wheels, increasing performance and fuel mileage.
Sorry for the fan clutch 101 explanation but I thought if you knew what it was you’d understand why we’re saying have it checked.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sounds like a fan for radiator problem. If a clutch get a new one if more than a few years old. Next would be the quality of the condition of the radiator. Take a look at it you may see that it's junk from the outside, T

1991 isuzu amigo overheating and exhaust manifold glowing red

Question From presleyl20 on 1991 isuzu amigo overheating and exhaust manifold glowing red

i have a 1991 isuzu amigo 2.6L i have been having overheating issues. i have replaced the thermostat, water pump, rotted out the inside of radiator. was just about to buy a new radiator drove it home after about 20 miles smelled a funny marshmellow burning smell.pulled over with it a 3/4 hot noticed while running exhaust manifold is glowing with blue what looks like fire shooting out where donut gasket is could this be why my truck is overheating? put my hand over end of exhaust and seems to be blowing out fine any help would be appreciated.... ps four a four cylinder gets very bad gas mileage and seems to have no power

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

1991: could be several things but for now I'm guessing exhaust restriction and engine needs to rid itself of exhaust heat which seems like it can't. As said a guess but I would test for exhaust restriction and fix the gasket where you seem to be seeing flames!

Leak - water pump? urgent reply needed.

Question From triikor on Leak - water pump? urgent reply needed.

Well xmas day my 96 isuzu bighorn 3.1td started pouring out coolant from underneath the crank pulley.

Seemed to be the waterpump as myself and family members thought, we have very basic knowledge of vehicles.

So I buy a replacement, and get to pulling it out.
It looks fine to my untrained eye.

All the fins are intact, gasket looks good. There is a tiny bearing noise when spinning it though.

Should I install the new pump now or is there something else I should look at behind the timing cover before closing it all up?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The fins don't mean anything. The seals go bad and it leaks through a weep hole under the pulley. Look for a coolant stain coming out of that hole. If it has any bearing growl at all, that's reason enough to change it.

Response From triikor

The weep hole on the water pump itself is stained up with coolant, so is under the crank pulley.

Thanks for the fast reply, I'll get to installing now. Hope it all works as I'm meant to be driving just under 200km tomorrow.

Isuzu Rodeo reaching temperature too fast

Question From louisj23 on Isuzu Rodeo reaching temperature too fast

1999 Isuzu Rodeo
94,000 miles
V6 LS
2WD

Recently had a check engine light diagnosed as excessive EGR flow. So just took it off and cleaned it out with some carb cleaner and have only seen the check engine light one time since a week ago.

Then I noticed that my temperature gauge was reading normal operating temperature at 200ish (mid-range) within just a couple minutes of driving at 20 MPH in 80 degree weather.
It has not overheated, coolant levels topped off, thermostat should be ok or it'd be overheating, the gauge pin does not immediately jump up to mid-range but takes a few minutes so it's not a stuck or jumpy gauge. How is it possible that I hit 200 degrees in 2 minutes? Also, if I leave it for an hour or two I get back in and the temperature is still rather warm, not mid-range but not cold either.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This could be normal. Engines are designed to warm up ASAP for saving fuel and lowering emissions. If it can maintain a steady operating temp and doesn't drift higher or lower I'd say it's ok.

How long it takes to cool completely down when the car is off is not a mechanical situation but the environment the car is parked in. Outdoors in a breeze will be much faster to cool off than in a closed garage for example and that would be normal,

Response From louisj23

True, I am in Tampa, FL but this is the first that I have noticed it after 3 years of owning this car. I have to drive this beast back to Boston next week and I'd hate to have to change a water pump or something. Seems weird that this would suddenly start happening. There couldn't possibly be any connection to a EGR valve on it's way out could there?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

If car is running properly the EGR should not be the cause of this. It is possible that your radiator is maxed out with ability to exchange heat. This time of year and till Spring is not so taxing on cooling systems here. It is slightly above normal daytime temps and 40s - 50s at night which is predictable here. Taking the coatal route should yield cooler temps for your run which I'm familiar with.

Funny but not: I'm heading to Maine Sunday with aging, handicapped MOM in my real nice 89 Town Car which just yesturday decided to spring a hair spray leak in radiator which didn't wet the radiator but the water pump area so hard to find!! Got a new one on the way for a couple hours from now - whew! Easy job and not expensive either. I always carry pre-mixed coolant and (ya even extra fuel) jumper wires, oil, tire plug kit and air pump and about always can get out of a jam by myself on the road. You should do the same. A trick with cooling system leak is to cut the lower gasket on radiator cap (takes the pressure off) fill system and limp along. In belt driven fanned cars put on heat. In electric fan cars force fan to stay on with jumper wire or ask for A/C in most and highest temp setting and fan stays on for some failures where fan has an attitude.

Trick with EGRs: Sometimes the pintle will seat better it rapped on with a hammer - carefully. That's not a fix for good but a chance out of a jam.

Have a safe trip,

T
