Power steering noise at right turns?

Showing 6 out of 6 Posts
Question From dfichtner on Power steering noise at right turns?

Car: 2001 GM/Daewoo Rezzo, 2.0 LPG

I just bought a used car and it's had some problems. I had some "repairs" done on a crunching sound that happened in the left front tire area (which was improved by never fixed). Also, I had them change the timing belt and water pump because it's at around 70,000 miles. This work was done at a shop far away, and I can't get back there, so going to have to go elsewhere.

Since I got my car back, after it warms up (20 mins driving) the power steering makes a noise when I'm turning to the right and accelerating (this noise was NOT there before the "repairs"). It happens immediately when I turn even just a little bit from center. The noise grows louder the longer I drive. If the engine sits overnight and cools, then it takes 20 mins for the noise to come back again. It's not a really loud noise, but it is noticeable and seems to be gradually getting a bit louder. It never happens when I'm turning left -- only when turning right, and accelerating changes the pitch of the noise up or down.. up with more gas... down when letting off.

I wonder if they put my car back together wrong after installing the timing belt? Any suggestions? The power steering fluid level is OK, by the way.

Thanks.

Response From dfichtner

Ok, I found out what the answer to this problem was...

Turns out that the garage who did my timing belt change did not replace the plastic timing belt cover with a new one, which, according to Daewoo, needs to be done when changing the belt.

Being Daewoo, I was then quoted $1,000 to fix that problem, and the unrelated crunching sound. They also came up with 3 or 4 other problems totally unrelated. I asked how much it would be to fix only the plastic cover and crunching sound, and they then said $990. It became obvious that they had a goal of charging me $1,000 for my repairs no matter what I had done!

I went to a 3rd shop (independent) and they fixed both problems for $250! The cover did need replacing ($100), and they also replaced two pieces on the bottom of the suspension near both tires (they're long, flat metal pieces that are parallel to the ground).

Problem solved.

Will not go to Daewoo for a fix again due to attempted overcharge! They did diagnose the problem correctly, though!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Thanks for sharing the fix with the world and glad you found a fair garage to do the work,

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Don't know this vehicle but much is generic about it.

#1. Make certain wheel lug nuts are properly tightened! NOW!

A maybe cause: There should be a metal dust/water shield for the front brakes. It's not too uncommon for them to get bent a bit in the course of hoisting and work and go un-noticed. If it's too close the forces of turning does torque on parts, wheel, rotor for the brake etc. If too close upon inspection it can be bent a bit back away and if that was the issue it's all set. Some can be done by hand with a cool brake please as they get hot. If it's just that and I can only guess than it's not a real safety issue but you need to find out as any noise is a warning of something,

T

Response From dfichtner

Ha.. thanks... just put new tires on her yesterday, and the noise is still there. So lug nuts are good.

Interesting about the break part thing. Did you suggest that had to do with the noise for turning? I'm pretty sure it's the power steering... the other noise.. hard to say!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

I can only guess with web forum diagnosis of this type. If not that shield which it still could be as there is some torquing of a rotor when turning. Those are usually bent from hoisting or putting stands too close to them but could be road debris and a near definite if vehicle is lowered for any reason with the wheel off!

You are there listening and I'm here so you have the upper hand of course to find this. It's possible it's the PS itself but more often noises from that would not select one side in my experience.

It could be anything that rotates unless it can do it standing still. If PS pump or receiving rack or gear box was doing this it would probably do it all the time even while still.

Forget already - wheel bearing are more famous for making more or less noise with a turn and sharp turns while giving it some gas will bring out the worst in a CV joint if applicable.

Again, noises of this sort are not normal IMO and chase down whatever it takes to find out what. I've just listed some likely possibilities from what I see here,
