TIMING BELT BROKE WHILE DRIVING 740 VOLVO STATION WAGON DO I JUST CHANGE THE BELT

Response From piercearcher Top Rated Answer

I think you over did your car dude. Are always pushing it to the limit, I mean always red line? If so, then your timing belt will surely break because of high pressure that you give. It will have shorter life span. Correct me if I'm wrong, Volvo S70 is the volvo wagon ryt? If so, then you must obtain avolvo S70 part to repair your car.

Response From Indytech

If your timing belt broke ,then you have a problem
as this is a interference engine, meaning piston to valve contact
can become a very expensive repair.

Timing belt for a Volvo s60

Question From Kenneydoc on Timing belt for a Volvo s60

Need some advice; My 2004 Volvo S60 needs a timing belt, 95k. The mechanic strongly suggested a new belt tensioner, pulley and replace the water plump while it is all apart. Is this a standard procedure, I can see the reason behind it while your in there replace it.

Thanks
Doc

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

For sure I would replace the water pump. In this case you have an interference engine meaning it is critical not to have any type of failure in belt related components so although the tensioners may still be in decent shape, they won't be forever and the cost of failure can be real high so it's a pretty good idea to replace them.

Response From Kenneydoc

Cool, thanks for reply. Like I said it made sense and I would probability do the same thing if I have a history of being a reliable repair shop.

Question From BellaMoon on Timing Belt

Hi All--

What would happen if the timing belt breaks on a 2008 Volvo C30 T5 manual transmission if the engine is running? (Sorry, I have no idea what the engine size is). Mileage is 119,643 -- yes, a lot for an '08. I bought it new, I have a 189 r/t commute to work 25 miles each way on mountain roads, plus another 103 miles r/t a couple times a week to the hospital where my little girl is being treated for cancer).

Thanks for your help.
--Lucy.

Response From Hammer Time

It would likely bend most every valve and for all intents and purposes, destroy the engine.

Response From Discretesignals

The engine size is 2.5L FYI. Hope your little girl gets better soon.

Response From BellaMoon Top Rated Answer

Thank you for the information on engine size! It's good to know these things :-) And thanks so much for your good thoughts about my daughter. She very ill right now but we're remaining positive!

Response From BellaMoon

Thank you. At the dealership it was never mentioned about timing belts for over 90,000 miles. The the service manager I worked with left and the new guy mentioned it should be replaced at 60,000 miles. He's also the same person told me I needed axle boots everytime I went in for a service and that it would be $1,150 to fix my A/C. Leery, I went to an independant mechanic. Not only was the problem with the A/C a sensor (under $100) and not the compressor, the axle boots were fine AND original to the car.

As for the timing belt, I'll get that tended to as soon as I have the money for it--my daughter's medical has to come first). The reason I asked was that with my previous car if the timing belt broke it wouldn't do any damage. Now I know I have to focus on getting it replace ASAP. Thanks again.

Question From sk3nn3y on problems replacing timing belt dodge stealth rt

ok i have a 92 dodge stealth rt 3000 v6 dohc that i just took in on a trade and im having problems lining up alignment dots on the two front pullys, ill turn them over about 3/4 of a full rotation and they wont go any further, any help please

Response From Hammer Time

That's probably because the pistons are hitting the valves. I hope you didn't force it.

You have to manually move the crankshaft a little until the cam frees up.

This is from the service manual

  1. Align timing marks for camshaft sprockets on the front bank, as follows:
  1. Install the crankshaft pulley. Shift timing mark on crankshaft sprocket by three teeth to lower piston in No. 1 cylinder slightly from top dead center. Turning camshaft sprocket with piston in No. 1 cylinder located at TDC may cause valves to interfere with piston.
  2. Make sure that timing marks on camshaft sprockets for intake and exhaust valves are not within range marked A, Fig. 45. If timing mark is within range marked A, turn camshaft sprocket to move timing mark to area closest to range marked A. In range marked A, the cam lobe on the camshaft lifts the valve through the rocker arm and the camshaft sprocket is apt to rotate by reaction force of the valve spring.
  3. Turn camshaft sprocket to locate timing mark as shown in Fig. 46. If the intake and exhaust valves of the same cylinder lift simultaneously, interference with each other may result. Therefore, turn the intake camshaft sprocket and the exhaust camshaft sprocket alternately.
  4. Turn camshaft sprocket clockwise to align the timing marks. If camshaft sprocket has been turned excessively, turn sprocket counterclockwise to align timing marks.
  5. Align timing mark of the crankshaft sprocket. Shift timing mark of crankshaft sprocket one tooth in counterclockwise direction to install timing belt.

Response From sk3nn3y

like how do i manually move the crankshaft

Response From Hammer Time

See my edit.

Response From sk3nn3y

ok im gonna try yalls advice in a couple minutes and ill let yall know what happens lol

Response From Discretesignals

If you look in the driver's side wheel well there should be a plug or hole. If you look in the hole you'll see the crankshaft bolt. If I remember you can stick a 1/2 extension in there to turn the crank.

Make sure all your spark plugs are out, so it is easier to turn. Once you get all your marks lined up, belt installed, and properly tensioned. Rotate the crank by hand 2 revolutions. Make sure you don't have any binding and that your marks are lined up correctly when you get back to TDC on compression.

Run a compression check on it before you try to start it. Got a feeling that it probably has bent valves.

Response From nickwarner

I think so too. The SOHC 3.0 was freewheeling but not so on the DOHC.

Response From Discretesignals

I first started out working at GM/Mitsubishi dealer. I don't know how many GT3000s and VR4s I saw that came in on tow truck on the Mits side because someone "tried" to do a timing belt. The worst I saw was someone tried to do head gaskets on one and got the camshafts swapped. There is no room for error on the DOHCs.

Response From re-tired

Follow HT's advise to the letter. There is absolutly NO room for error . What errks me is that the lab coats designing these bombs are making 6 + digit salaries . Maintenance is a after thought . Volvo and lincoln/ford each have a multi cam engines with no timing index marks at all. You have to degree each cam in relation to each other and the crank. Ford has a $700 kit to do this. SHEESH

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Volvo and lincoln/ford each have a multi cam engines with no timing index marks at all.

Welcome to Variable Valve timing

Response From Discretesignals

oh oh. you don't know how to move the crankshaft and your doing a timing belt on a 3.0L DOHC engine? Oh lordy.

Response From sk3nn3y

yea im not a timing guy im more electronics, interior, suspension, so im out of my zone but im giving it a try lol

Response From Discretesignals

Was this thing running before the trade?

Response From sk3nn3y

no but we got a bill of sale notorized that the car would run once i got it together and the timing belt on

Response From sk3nn3y

i didnt force it thats why i got on here and asked someone what to do.....how do i free the cam?
