car wont start with out carb and choke cleaner

Question From Guest on car wont start with out carb and choke cleaner

I have a pontiac grand am year 2000, been having a few problems, the car wont turn over, until i spray some carb and choke cleaner in it...i dont know the problem, any help?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Does it stay running after the carb cleaner or just stall out? Either way a fuel pressure check is in order. If it stays running and well or starts when warm only look for the cold enrichment system to be the fault with all else checking out, T

Response From Guest

yea it starts fine and stays running, drivable, but when you turn it off, it wont start again with out the choke cleaner

Response From Guest

whats the cold enrichment system?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Cold enrichment is the way fuel injected vehicles behave like it has a choke. That shouldn't be needed at all with a warm engine just like chokes back when. Injected still needs the enrichment and pumping does nothing like a carb vehicle.

Hope that explains that, T

Took the whole air filter box out and started the car with out it, starts up like brand new, new air filter?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

A new air filter wouldn't hurt most cars on the road today. You could test that by putting it all together without the air filter but if you try that make sure the unfiltered side of the box and any snorkling is cleared out and clean. You sure don't want to suck in leaves, road dirt or junk of any kind.

I think you have the air flow sensor on the air filter box or snorkling on that car and if you unplugged it (wiring) and it worked try putting it all together with it unplugged and see if it works. It should run very poorly with it unplugged and should set off your check engine light but not totally sure about that, T

Response From Guest

If i was driving with out an air filer unknowingly how would i clear it out?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Dump out any sand and leaves you may see, then blow it out with compressed air and it should be good for a test but you need the real paper filter soon after to stop that junk from getting sucked in, T

Response From Guest

I have a filter in it, i just never put it in, forgot about it believe it or not, so i wanted to clear the shit out that it sucked in and see what happends.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The fuel pressure test and test while cranking engine too. Just maybe the fuel pump isn't getting power to it in crank mode. You should hear it come on in just run mode - build up pressure - then I would think it would start even if it's not working in the crank mode but perhaps not well.

Test that and let's see about power to fuel pump after that test when this happens, Keep at it, T

2002 Pontiac Sunfire SE starting problems/car rattles

Question From mcgett17 on 2002 Pontiac Sunfire SE starting problems/car rattles

Hey guys. I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2.2L with 89k miles on it. I bought the car in December, and have done the typical TLC to make sure the vehicle will hold up. For the past few days, when I start the car, the car seems to rattle or shake, like a phone vibrating. It does this when I am sitting at lights and am in park as well. The battery is brand new so I know it isn't that. Any idea's?

* I have done an oil change, oil filter change, fuel change, fuel filter change, power steering flush, and put in a new air filter all in the past 2 weeks, just to make sure everything was new. Use fram oil, fuel and air filter, and valvoline maxlife high mileage.

Thank you ahead of time for your help. Its much appreciated.

I deleted your second problem. You need to start another question for the unrelated problem.

1986 Pontiac Parisienne doesn't shut off

Question From jpgisme on 1986 Pontiac Parisienne doesn't shut off

I have a 1986 pontiac parisienne with a 5.0 305. I've replace the carberator, air filter, pcv valve, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and oil. I replaced the carberator on christmas and everything else within a month before that. When i go to shut off the car it just sputters on and doesn't wanna shut off. It did this sometimes before i replaced the carb and gradually became an everytime thing. Only when its hot though, if I go turn it on then turn it off it'll be fine it only sputters when its warmed up and i turn it off. Also when im driving and give it gas it'll accelerate for a second then stop accelerating for a second and then resume acceleration. If anyone knows what the problem is i'd greatly appreciate your advice.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Sidom is right on the money. Dieseling is caused by carbon particles glowing and igniting the fuel after the engine is shut off. Also, causes pre-ignition. These particles will ignite the fuel BEFORE the spark plug fires. Some call it a 'knock'. Obviously, this is caused by heat. We've done MotorVac cleaning on highly carbonized engines with good success. You need to make sure that the engine is running at normal operating temperature, not too hot. The air/fuel mixture needs to be correct. Too lean of a mixture will cause high combustion temperatures. A vacuum leak can cause a lean condition. Worn spark plugs. Low octane fuel. Sounds backwards, but the lower the octane, the hotter it burns. It takes more voltage to fire a lean mixture than a rich mixture...which, in turn, causes heat. Over-advanced timing will just add to the mix. Just to add to the mix....

Response From Sidom

Well for both probs I would really be looking at the carb. Usually when they get a bad needle & seat it will leak just enough fuel on shut off to let the car "diesel" One other thing you can look at would be carbon build up on the pistons, if it gets hot enough, it can make an engine diesel but then again, you need some sort of fuel to diesel.....

The hesitation sound like a bad spot on the accelerator pump...

When the car is warm & you know it's going to diesel, have the air cleaner off & look down the throat when someone shuts it off to see if you can see any gas dripping, get the carb warrantied.

Also make sure the timing is set to the correct specs........ Seafoam makes a good product you can clean the pistons with.........

Sounds like the timing for sure.

2000 Pontiac Montana Thermostat r&r???

Question From davegto on 2000 Pontiac Montana Thermostat r&r???

How the heck can they design a 9 dollar part that costs 140 or more to install?
Any ideas on how to do this with no real mechanical aptitude?
Help

and Thanks

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Looks like the exhaust pipe needs to be removed to access the thermostat. Look at the radiator hoses to see where the housing is. Have fun.

  1. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Air Filter Element Replacement in Computers and Controls.
  2. Drain the coolant until the coolant level is below the thermostat. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System].
  3. Remove the crossover exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement.
  4. Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing bolts and clean any sealer from the bolt threads.
  6. Remove the thermostat housing and gasket.

Response From davegto

Thanks for the how to way2old

but alas at 50 yrs myself, can't hepp ya with the younger mind thingie so well.

and if you are the unique comedian that engineered this thermostat HIDING from
ease to replace

well? you'd be LOL about now.

If you didn't, you'd feel like i do-- dewdles!

Thanks for the info -i'm SURE that exhaust pipe will be EZ to pop off and on
after ONLY 173k miles :) yeah pizza cake!
good luck anyone else with this problem.

Response From techmeltz

Hey... Way2Old's instructions are technically correct, but I've done this about a half dozen times without removing the exhaust crossover pipe. Here's the details:
there are two bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the cylinder head. the one in the back needs to be backed out a little at a time with a box-end wrench by reaching around the exhaust crossover to come at the bolt from underneath. I tend to take two with different offsets, and then swap between them. Once the bolt is a little loose, you can use your fingers (it will take both hands, one from the top and one from the bottom) to loosen it the rest of the way. the nearer bolt is much more straight forward. when reassembling, start the rear bolt just enough to hold itself in place, then wiggle in the thermostat housing. The bolt hole is actually a slot. After you have wiggled it into place, again use both hands to finger tighten the bolt, then go back to the alternating box end wrenches.

Good Luck!

Response From leslierae

I am having a problem getting the thermostat housing off, can i take the exhaust pipe off without hurting anything?

2004 pontiac grand prix gt, multiple problems?

Question From Guest on 2004 pontiac grand prix gt, multiple problems?

My Car Has Been Recently Having Problems, First Off It Takes A Couple Cranks To Start, And It Could Be The Problem... I Looked Up A TSB And It Says That The Battery Cable Needs To Be Cleaned And The Bolts On It Need To Be Replaced, I Was Thinking About Doing That When All Of The Sudden Tonight I Started My Car And Put It In Drive Then Hit The Gas And The Car Just Kept Jerking Back And Forth, Like It Didnt Know Whether To Go In Drive Or Reverse, I Put It In Park Then Drive Again And It Did The Same Thing.... Then I Turned It Off, Then Back On (took 2 Times To Turn It On) Then It Worked Fine... Could That Have Been Caused By My Battery Or What? Or Is My Transmission Going Out? Or Maybe Both? I Need Some Advice..thanks

Response From flgmtech1

check the battery condition both at the cables and at the posts or terminal ends. Load test and make sure it can maintain above 9.5volts, then scan the PCM for codes. Diagnose the codes accordingly.
It sounds like two seperate issues, the first being a no start, either it cranks and does not start, or it clicks?? You did not say. If it cranks but does not start for a few minutes, test the fuel pressure and see if you have less than 60 psi. The fuel pump may be weak and not putting out the proper pressure, or you could have a bad fuel pressure regualtor and or a clogged filter.
If all of these pass inspections, the next time you go to start it cold, turn the key to run, DO NOT CRANK just turn it to run, then after 30 seconds shut the ket off for 30 seconds, again turn to run for 30 seconds and off again for 30 seconds, NOW start the car. If it starts right up, chances are the issue is a fuel starvation issue.
if it still does not start, check for spark when you are cranking cold. The issue could be a crank sensor. The 3.8 has had allot of issues with crank sensors.
As far as the tranmission, check the fluid level and the color and smell the fluid, if it is dark brown or smells burnt then this is a transmission that needs to be serviced,. If however the trans fluid is light pink like pepto bismol, you could have water in the transmission. If it is red and smells like trans fluid, then the transmission is in normal operating range. I have not seen a trans go in and out of drive into reverse, slippage out of drive is just that, out of drive, but I have never seen one go from a forward gear into reverse.
That sounds more like a TCC lock up issue from stop like trying to take off in fourth gearm this feels like a shudder and tries to stall. Or it could be a missfire under load or acceleration. The key is to diagnose with a scan tool Like the Tech 2, other wise you are ulitamately guessing at any number of probable causes, each having their own solutions. I think you might want to consider taking this to a shop where you know the Technician or Mechanic and have him diagnose this issue.

Response From Guest

chances are i will take it back to where i bought it and pay $55 an hour for them to diagnose the problem.... but ima go right now and see whats going on and have some guys from work look at it... i bought the car from where i work and i would rather have multiple people give me opinions then just 1 person

Response From Guest

So.. i bought a battery cause i tested my old one and it sucked, i started it after i put it in but it didnt immediately start, it took a second time... then i turned it off and tried it again and it worked... so i hope it fixed the problem....but i think for some reason im getting really shitty gas mileage all of the sudden, any ideas?

Response From flgmtech1 Top Rated Answer

the easiest way to try to squeeze better gas mileage out of any vehicle is to make sure that the air filter is clean and you can see daylight through it, that the PCV valve is working freely, that the fuel filter is clean with no restrictions, and that you keep the oil changed regularly. If you have not done so, I recommend cleaning your throttle body, and your induction and injection system All of these things can give you not only better performance but greatly improve your gas mileage. The air filter and fuel filter alone is going to give you a very noticeable difference. Most cars past 1995 have 100,000 mile platinum plugs that generally last every bit of the 100,000 if you are not sure if they have been serviced that and the wires are a good preventative maintenance item, but are also exspensive. Plugs can run 5.00-6.00 each, and wires I recommend AC/Delco on both, can run around 50-60.00
