(NAPSI)-Whether you're planning a simple oil change or a major engine overhaul, there are a few tips that the FRAM® automotive experts suggest you do before you begin.

• Check your owner's manual before performing vehicle maintenance. Engine components vary from vehicle to vehicle, and it's important to be familiar with your engine before you even open the hood.

• Make sure you have the proper tools to complete the job. Although your tool belt will be armed with different devices based on the job you're performing, it's always important to keep rags, mechanic gloves and extra fluids within reach.

• Double check part numbers while at the store to ensure you're buying the appropriate item. These numbers are specific to the make, model and year of your vehicle. Nothing is "one size fits all." Not only will this save you a repeat trip to your local retailer, but it will guarantee your automobile is equipped with the correct parts it needs to perform at its best.

• For best results, use premium products. Many aftermarket manufacturers produce high-quality products that are also affordable. FRAM®, makers of America's #1 consumers choice filter, know the importance of oil filtration and vehicle performance, and manufacture a variety of premium filter products.

• Choose products that suit both your vehicle's needs as well as your driving needs. SUVs and light-duty trucks have different requirements than high-performance sports cars. If changing the oil, off-roaders can rely on the rugged design of the FRAM® Tough Guard® oil filter to protect their engines under stressful towing conditions. If high-performance is your forte, choose products designed for these horsepower-rich machines-the FRAM® RACING® High Performance line offers air, oil and fuel filters for these applications.

• Regardless of the work you're doing, check all fluid levels. These include oil, antifreeze/coolant, brake and washer fluid. Keeping fluids at levels suggested in your owner's manual can prevent costly engine repairs and ensure the safety of your car and its passengers. If you change your fluids, it's important to dispose of them properly. Each state has different guidelines, so know what yours are.

For many of us, vehicles are one of the largest and most costly purchases. Routine and preventative vehicle maintenance are sure ways to protect your investment and retain vehicle value. For more information on vehicle maintenance, please log on to www.fram.com.

Have all necessary materials in armÕs reach when performing vehicle service.
