Affordable SUVs Drive Into New Territory

(NAPSI)—The abbreviation SUV stands for “Sport Utility Vehicle,” but a new, sensibly sized model offers such a combination of style, range of seating and cargo capability that those three letters could be said to signify “Superior Utility and Versatility.”

Suzuki designed the XL-7 with convenience in mind. It measures 183.7 inches in length, making it longer than comparable models—and easier to shuttle kids, their friends and all the essential gear. The extra-wide rear passenger doors make the 73.0 cubic feet of interior space easily accessible.

At the same time, the XL-7 is a breakaway from standard “behemoth” SUVs. It is functional, easy to maneuver and is more fuel efficient. Basically, it offers everything the “big boys” do, without taking up as much space—or costing nearly as much. That makes it less intimidating for both owners and occasional drivers.

The standard model offers class-leading equipment, including a V-6 engine, power windows and door locks, power mirrors, keyless remote entry, cruise control, tilt steering wheel and an automatic lighting system. An extended wheelbase allows for comfortable third-row seating.

Other standard equipment includes multi-reflector halogen headlights, rear wiper/washer, privacy glass, adjustable armrests and a first aid kit in the rear cargo area that’s stocked with items to help with life’s little emergencies. Most models also have convenient second and third seat air-conditioning panel controls.

Providing an extra measure of luxury is the Suzuki Limited Edition SUV. This model offers all the features that the XL-7 does, yet it takes an extra step by offering posh leather seating, burled center console trim, fog lamps and side-step running boards. Simply put, it combines the necessities of affordability, utility and convenience with refinement and style.

Safety and engineering

The XL-7’s engine and chassis are designed to eliminate vibration and noise, so the vehicle delivers a quiet ride.

Engineered for a smooth and confident ride on the road, the XL-7 also has the toughness required to stand up to natural terrain. It has a tight turning circle and provides extremely precise handling.

The all-aluminum engine produces a peak output of 170 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 178 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. A lowered rear differential gearing improves acceleration while still maintaining good fuel economy.

The rear-wheel-drive XL-7 has a sticker price of less than $20,000, and four-wheel-drive models start at about $21,000.
