Trouble Shooting 2000 Mercury Marquis Wiper Motor

Question From JackM on Trouble Shooting 2000 Mercury Marquis Wiper Motor

I replaced the wiper motor on my 2000 Marquis LS because the wipers were only working on high and would not park. Now they work in all positions but park in the up position unless I have them on intermittent and let them stop before I turned them off. Then they park in the correct position. What else could be causing this?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

3. Verify that the plastic windlatch slide is positioned so that it can move an equal distance beyond both ends of the depressed park windlatch guide bracket. Make sure the tab on the windlatch is oriented in the proper direction for the specific application (Figure 1, views A and C).

4. Apply a thin film of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease (Motorcraft Part XG-3-A) to the mating surfaces of the plastic windlatch slide and the output arm.

5. Install the output arm onto the wiper motor output shaft according to the specific application (Figure 1, views B and D).

NOTE
THE OUTPUT SHAFT AND ARM ARE KEYED FOR PROPER ORIENTATION.

6. Reinstall the output arm bolt and torque to 132-180 Lb-in. (15-20 N.m).

7. Reinstall the plastic output arm dust cover.

8. Rotate the output arm slowly clockwise one full turn by hand, then turn the output arm by hand counter-clockwise to seat the detent in the output arm against the stop on the plastic windlatch slide.

9. Position the vehicle wiper arm linkage so that the wiper blades are at the bottom of the windshield, just above the parked position.

10. Install the wiper motor in the vehicle and connect the wiper arm linkage per the procedures outlined in Section 01-16 or Section 501-16 Wiper and Washer Systems - Removal and Installation, of the appropriate model year Workshop Manual.

Question From Dale on windshield wiper motor / 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis

Subject: RE: windshield wiper & washer trouble
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I have 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis. The windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump motor work only when they want to. Sometimes they won't work at the same time. I might drive for up to 20 minutes with the wiper switch on before the wiper motor will cut in. Some times but not always. Sometimes will come on sooner. I hope there is help out there. Thanks.

Response From carjunky Top Rated Answer

Hmmm,

Correct me if I'm wrong, both "windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump motor " work only when they want to.

I would think there is either a short somewhere in the system.

Or your windsheild wiper switch may be faulty. This once happened to me with my directional signal and I needed to replace the switch that was inside the steering column. But since both the windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump motor work on and off I would think its leaning toward a switch.

wiper motor keep running in off position.

Question From rafiq on wiper motor keep running in off position.

1990 mercury sable, the wiper motor won't go off in "off" position.Trouble started when the voltage regulator went bad and the voltage raised to very high. The switch assembly was replaced with no success. How to fix this. please also indicate the the location of falty part.

Response From Todd Norton Top Rated Answer

Hi Rafiq
do all the other positions on the switch work properly? high , low , intermittent, washer ect...
any other work done recently on your vehicle ?
try applying a temporary ground to the body of the wiper motor or at mounting bolt location using a fused jumper wire if available, wiper motors are notorious for poor grounds .....hope this helps .........Todd

Wipers only work on high

Question From amandacj on Wipers only work on high

I have a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and the windshield wipers only work on the high setting. They also do not return to the spot where they should and stop where ever they are when turned off. This makes for a fun timing game while driving around town. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

Response From way2old

Most likely cause is the wiper motor itself. The reason they do not stop in the proper place is the park circuit in the wiper motor.

Response From steve01832

Replace the intermittent wiper delay module! There is obviously nothing wrong with the motor if it works on high. The delay module controls not only the intermittent wipers, it also controls low speed, washer pump, and wiper park. The dealer is the only place to get one.

Response From way2old

Hey steve0182. If you read the post again, you should notice the poster stated that the wipers stop wherever they are switched off. That is indicitave of a bad park circuit in the wiper motor. Not disputing your answer, just going by over 40 years experience. 95% of the time it has been the wiper motor, about 3 percent it has been the wiper switch and the remaining 2 percent goes to wiper delay module or the GEM.

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

I understand what you are saying. But, the power goes through the delay module to the wiper motor. So when the wipers work on high and he turns the switch off, all power is removed from the motor so it will not park. I have been burned in the past by Ford and the way they wire these circuits. I have learned over the years that the delay module controls the park as well as low speeds. Didn't mean to step on your foot, but I've been there with Ford.

1989 Mercury Cougar LS Bizarre Electrical Issue

Question From Demadaha on 1989 Mercury Cougar LS Bizarre Electrical Issue

I have a 1989 Mercury Cougar LS that seems to be having an unusual electrical issue.

Every time I step on the brakes my windshield wipers go from intermittent to low continuous. They'll keep moving for a little bit but then go back to intermittent. To add to the confusion this only happens if my headlights are on. I've replaced my turn signal switch but that hasn't helped the problem and have no idea what else to try.

Edited so I don't bump: The problem has become intermittent after I checked the grounds so I'm thinking something came loose and I put it back in place. I'm going to try tightening some things and that should fix it.

Response From samg.

I'd start by checking wires/grounds under the dash area. Does it have anything aftermarket wired into the factory wiring?

Response From Demadaha

I'll check the wires. It does have an aftermarket stereo and speakers but they've been in the car for four years with no issues.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Samz is probably on the right track. Also check the body grounds in the engine bay. You could even do a voltage drop test at the wiper motor connector ground circuit back to the negative post of the battery to confirm if you have a ground problem or not.
