Windsheild wipers

Question From specbikes on Windsheild wipers

2008 GMC Sierra 4.8 135,000 miles .Windshield wipers quit after ice storm. Mechanic ran tests. He says not fuse, wiring, wiper motor or switch. Says possibly under hood fuse box

Response From Hammer Time

I sure don't know how he eliminated all those things and ended up blaming the fuse box. The wipers are ultimately controlled by the Body control module. The selection of speeds are done through a single wire after the switch selects a number of resisters that varies the voltage signal going to the BCM on that wire. the BCM identifies what speed is requested by reading the voltage on that line and then activates the motor accordingly. In order to diagnose this problem you are going to need a professional, high end scan tool and someone that really knows how to use it to troubleshoot the problem.

It seams something is missing in your post- some information maybe,
But I agree that your 'mechanic' should NOT be lost in this repair.

1994 GMC Jimmy wiper problem

Question From Steve on 1994 GMC Jimmy wiper problem

I am trying to get an inspection sticker and my wipers stopped working. The blinker and high beam works, but no washer or wiper. Fuse is good. I had the dash apart to replace the heater core. Is it possible that something got unplugged? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I had one do that on a 96 Suburban and I played with the connection at the motor and they would work a couple weeks and then do it again. I finally just put in a new motor and that was the end of it and later (Mom's car) she was notified that it was a major recall for some circuit in the motor and they did reimburser her for the job over a year later.

Have you VIN# and call or go to your local dealer about this. In general if it's covered it should have expired over the time as safety (this is!) items stay covered.

Hope it's a freebe for you, Good luck,

Response From Steve Top Rated Answer

Thank you Tom,
I checked the GMC recalls and my truck was not there. Is there any connections under the dash that could have been disconnected while I was replacing the heater core? Where would I find the wiper motor?
Thank you, Steve

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I almost certain the motor is visable on firewall under you hood near brake booster. It has a connector with tons or wires there and you need to pull out a nylon lock to remove and inspect it. Or just wiggle it with the wipers on and see if it changes. You can also whack the round part of the motor with a reasonable tap from a hammer while it is on and see if it starts up. If so the motor is almost always bad. Also check that the motor itself has ground. You can do that with alligator jumper wires to body of motor - not just the mounting bolts. Some use a funny strap to ground motor to firewall that fails. Clean connecions or make a new one if the ground seems to be the problem. Good luck,

Percussive Maintenance. That's my favorite. Love reading your posts Tom. Keep up the good work.

Wipers not working right

Question From confused1 on Wipers not working right

I have a 1999 GMC ext.cab truck and my wipers only work on fast speed. When I turn them on nothing till
I reach the fast speed then they work fine but as I go to turn them down to a slower speed or off the wipers just stop where ever they are on the windshield so I have to keep turning the switch till I get the wipers to stop at the bottom of the windshield. What would be causing this to make the wipers only work in fast speed? How would I fix this? Is it the motor or a wiper switch relay (whatever that is) Anybody have any help ?? What should I do? Ok someone told me it could be a GM WIPER MOTOR PULSE BOARD ASSEMBLY where is this and and how do you replace it and it easy to do? Could this be the problem?

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Yes..sounds like thats your problem.... "pulse board"
Its mounted on the front of the wiper motor...black cover....easy to remove and install...

Let us know how you make out...

Response From confused1

Hi again Jim
I was told there might be a sealing issue after taking the black cover off the wiper motor to change the pulse board. What should I use or is there something else I need to order to seal it back up so water won't get in it? What would you suggest? Help please I've never installed any wiper motors on newer trucks. What do I need to be aware of after removing the cowl cover? Is it really a easy job? I'm just not sure. Thanks Jim

Response From Double J

Honest ...it is an easy job...

Take a look at the wiper motor...you'll see the black cover mounted to it...thats it...disconnect the wiring connector, remove the attaching screws....install in reverse order....

Here is a picture of one.....CRedit to Dan D...for the pic..As Dan said...don't know who DR.Auto Parts is...just a good pix.

Response From confused1

Thanks Jim and Tom I'll work on it as soon as I can ,hopefully it'll solve my problem.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Excellent JIM. confused1 - if you feel you need to seal something, consider the liquid electrical tape, brush in cap stuff. Auto stores or home centers too. Handy stuff for all kinds of things - tolerates heat, oils etc.,

Response From confused1

wiper and washer problems

Question From Guest on wiper and washer problems

88 GMC K1500 1/2 ton with 350 engind. Sierra with power windows/doorlocks and A/C. 183,000 miles. Windshield wipers have, over quite a long period of time, degraded in working. It is to point now where they come on as usual but don't stop after four wipes, stop in mid screen or wipe fifteen or twenty times before stopping where they are not supposed to stop. Washer performance has degraded also. Stopped working altogether last week. Replaced reservoir and pump assembly today. No help. Line seems to be clear; can blow through it and clear line of liquid. My next thought is to replace wiper motor assembly. The problem with the wipers started years ago when truck relatively new and was tied to washing enging at carwash. After every thing dried out from driving the wipers would work normally again. Dampness or rainy days seemed to be tied to this. Any ideas would be great as I want to keep the truck in operating order and this is a real pain in the behind. One note, the wipers come on when the switch is rotated. That part is ok, they just do not work right afterward. Is the washer tied to the wipers electronically? I am rambling now. Please help. Thank you.

Response From Double J

Sounds like a Wiper Motor 'Pulse Board Module' failure to me.

Its mounted on the front of the wiper motor, simple to replace.Approx $30.00 at Autozone

And Yes,the washers are tied to the wipers electrically...thru this module...

Looks similar to this...

Response From Guest

Thank you very much for your helpful reply. I am guessing that is why replacing the washer tank and pump assembly did not accomplish anything. That part was probably ok, this board with the circuitry is what the problem is. OK.

Having looked at the wiper motor previously, and looked into how to remove the old and put a new one in, am I understanding correctly that the wiper motor itself does not need to come out, just the board that is attached to it. In other words, I can remove this board from the motor assembly from under the hood at the firewall where the motor is mounted and do not have to pull the wiper arms and plastic shielding under the arms to get to the portion of the wiper motor that is inside the firewall. Bear with me, a bit more help and I can do this. Thank you again.

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Yes,thats correct!

You dont need to remove the Wiper Motor
It mounts right on the front of the motor.

Response From Guest

Thank you again. I have it taken care of. A note you may be interested in. Apparently, my 88 GMC was an early manufacture and had a different style of wiper motor. The pulse module board I purchased from my local auto wrecker, the same one you pictured for me, would not fit. The front of mine was round. I actually pulled the board myself at the yard and failed to note any difference between the two wiper motors until I got home to install it. My guy at the yard said his software shows only one type of board for this truck;the square one. Today we theorized GM may have had a problem with the original motor initially and thereafter mounted an improved model that everyone shows in their software as the right part. He swapped me the board for the newer style of motor after we matched up the stud holes with measurements and plugging it in. So I ended up with a motor anyway which was not too bad to put in once I figured it all out and synchonized the arms properly after the install. Thank you again for your help sir!

where to start with weird windshield wiper issue

Showing 3 out of 5 Posts | Show 2 Hidden Posts
Question From wags1970 on where to start with weird windshield wiper issue

I've got a 92 GMC sierra that I am having weird issues with the windshield wipers. The other day I could not get it to shut off. The following day only one wiper would go up and down, and the one that was working, although the switch said it was off, it wasn't actually off. It would wipe really fast a few times, then stop, then nothing for a bit, then it would kick up again, then stop. Again, only the one wiper is working, the other one tries to move but it can't. where is my starting point for diagnosing this? seems like if the wiper motor was bad that neither wiper would move. Any ideas?

Response From Sidom

A real common problem on these is the circuit boards, they have a problem with their solder joints causing intermittent connection problems similar to what you are experiencing. Common enough where just the boards are available at most part stores & very easy to install. You can do it without even removing the motor.

It's in the $20 to $40 range.........

The one wiper issue sounds like a spline problem Nick has already covered

Response From wags1970

today I put up the windshield wipers like you guys suggested and saw the arm moving on both of them. so does that mean its a bad spline? How do I get the wiper off? I didn't want to pry on it and brake anything before asking? what do I need to do to correct this issue?

regarding the circuit issue, its still acting flaky. seems if i disconnect the battery and reconnect it, I can start the truck and the wipers will not come on automatically. only after I engage the wipers does it seem to start up and not want to shut off. I can try replacing the circuit board, I'm assuming the pic you showed me is under the cover on the wiper motor itself? I hope I don't have to get at the steering wheel, I don't have a puller, and I have limited tools and time to do too much. taking it to a repair station really isn't an option. this truck is more or less a plow truck. But I do need to have both wipers working for when I'm plowing, so I need to get it resolved. I can live with the wipers not wanting to shut off, I can always pull the fuse for it. but I need to get that stuck wiper going. thankfully its on the passenger side, but I won't have ample visibility plowing if its not working. appreciate the help!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

As both have said - the circuit board was a problem on these AND you no doubt have a striped wiper arm. It's splined to grab and if forced against snow or ice it can strip. Just hope it's the arm and not the male splines as a replacement arm is nothing to replace.

Get them to PARK position some how. Bet the one that was trouble (slipping) can be moved by hand with vehicle off! There should be a tab that when pried outward will allow removal of the whole arm exposing the driving splined male part.

The little tab will look like below and should pry out with a screwdriver...........

Yours may not look exactly like that and may have a holed tab - same idea.

While removed look at the female part and see if it looks striped - bet is yes and a new arm (junkyard or ask at parts store) would solve that much.

Make a habit of leaving wiper up when snow or ice is expected so if they aren't free yet this won't happen again. Ask at parts for that resistor pack that Sidom showed. If he said it's easy it is so remove cover - can't remember if you need do more than squeeze or what exactly as the first one of these was a surprise and I tossed the whole motor and GM paid for it later under recall! No harm in asking about that either as it may still be covered.

Not sure but I don't think right and left wiper arms are the same so get the correct one. If in trouble right now till you get the parts, Rain-X is a good bet but has to go on a dry windshield. FYI - I use Rain-X but not on windshield as it can cause a ratchet of wipers in all but steady rain and near impossible to remove but try carefully when fixed to clean windshield with brake cleaner or carb cleaner to remove Rain-X. I do like it for side and back windows,

pop the wipers up in the air so they don't hit the windshield and see if both will turn. Most likely your non-moving wiper has stripped splines in it and cannot grab well enough to go up and down the window. As to your electrical gremlin, you either have a short in the motor (park circuit power jumping into the run circuit) or a short in the switch. If its the switch you will need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate depressor to get to it. Do you have access to a good shop manual with a lot of pictures or exploded views? This is a doable job for most anyone if they take their time and have a good manual with them. Post back if you need any more help.
