Question From 67eleanor on '95 lumina washer pump

1995 chevrolet lumina base.
when i hit the washer pump key in the steering. the pump will make no noise. but the wipers work for 3-4 times then stop. i attach a test lamp to washer pump elect. terminal connecter. and try to start the switch again but the lamp wont start. but the wipers move. i connect the pump direct for the battery its work. i check fo damage wire but i couldnt find any thing its look perfect. waht could be the problem.

Response From Hammer Time

See if you have power on the pink wire coming off the switch when the washer button is pushed.

Response From 67eleanor

thank you mr Hammer Time .i check th pink wire its give power only when push the button. i trace it. its go for a total of thick wire covered with black tape. i check the fuse box in the passenger side all fuse are ok. i dont know where to check now.

Response From Hammer Time

That pink wire goes to the pump. You could verify it there too just to make sure the wire isn't broken but it looks like you have a bad pump.

Response From 67eleanor

if its a bad pump why th terminal not light up when i connect the lamp?.i will try to find a new one and tell u what going to happen. thanks.

Response From Hammer Time

You just said you had power on the pink wire when the button is pushed. That means you're sending power to the pump and it's not responding.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Easy to do, I'm confused - does the pump get power or not? It reads both ways to me. If yes and it doesn't work it would be the pump motor if no you find out why tracing it back for a break somewhere.

Just wondering - is this pump on the reservoir for fluid and also a seal? If so and it's the pump there's an easy fix leaving it there but waiting to hear about power or not,

T

Response From 67eleanor

sorry its took me time to answer i have pronlem in the work anyway. i buy new pump stl not working. the ping wire at the end of th steering clm have power. and the red wire in the washer pump connect get power when i start the swtch. but the dark blue wire have no gnd. wher ths wire go i try to trace it but it go into the firewall.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

? Where are you losing ground, at the wiper motor, switch or does it quit between wiper motor and the pump? If so that's a wire chase for where the break is.......

T

Response From 67eleanor

i fpund the problem in the red box above. if i connect a test lamp one terminal for the body gound and the other to red wire and i start the washer swtch the wiber work for 6-7 second and the lamp light only when i press th swtch. but when i connect the lamp between the dark blue and the battry + the light wont start when i press the swtch. i trace ths wire but i didnt find where it go.

Response From Hammer Time

Both feeds are supplied through the wiper motor.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I see that much. Just wondered if cover off (if practical) would expose the issue right there or show connector problems right there as indicated. We know that motor can work and do everything I think was said but now just isn't supplying ground either connection, solder on a board or what just might be visible. Sure easier if looking right at it. Some of these boards were recalled but I think those the wipers would quit completely. The repair was just to replace the board inside there,

T

Response From 67eleanor

thank u all for ur explanation. the board of the wiper motor damage i didnt want to open it and fix it. i make a fuse wire to the washer pump. and its work fine now.

if u ask me why i did it like that. i dont like to cut any wire on my cars i respect this wire and who make it.
thanks again.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You are correct in not messing with existing vehicle's wiring. I didn't know how this was placed never mind wiring or inside motor circuit board or what the heck.

Many were just easier to add a generic washer pump in line of the hose to tank, hurts nothing and can take those out later in two seconds.

Love your eagle and wishes for NYC which you may change your mind on - big bucks for anything. I'm just outside in rural Boston. Impossible to own a car in there - no parking or donate first children or part with bucks that would buy a state for what's called a "Park-a-minium" prime spot 500$$$$$$$$ meaning 1/2 mil!

You are a sport, keep at it,

Tom

PS: American eagles look over their right side! Check. Look at US coins and paper bills - NEVER looking left! TRUE!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Hard for me to see the diagrams well with the screen I have. Appears to have a cover over where blue wire goes. Can you take that off and keep checking?

T

Response From Hammer Time

As the wiring diagram shows, the pump is part of the wiper motor.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Triggered by the wiring at wiper motor but where is the pump itself? He said it can work but no power to it up top.

I think all of these type set ups had a high rate of defects in the circuit board on the wiper motor. Yikes - so long ago it's scary - tossed one whole and not long after GM paid for the whole thing!

He said the pump motor itself can work and waiting to see if it gets triggered or not. Look for where this car likely is,

T

Response From Hammer Time

Triggered by the wiring at wiper motor but where is the pump itself?

The pump itself is in the reservoir but it is powered and grounded through the wiper motor so the power and ground can be tested right at the pump.

At first I was thinking that this was one of the old type with the clicking washer on the back of the wiper motor but it's not.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

I don't know when they quit that piggy back washer motor which wasn't motor it used the power of the wiper motor not a separate motor which could be anyplace which is why I thought this one also plugs the reservoir.

Still waiting for some knowns of tests on this. Pump seems to work so where's the break of either power or ground - thanks for bringing that up as of course it's equally important. I think I saw that wires (common) go into probably those wiring plastic tubes wrapped in tape (factory) so need to know the #1 you mentioned, power or not at trigger pink wire,

Question From MrGibbons on Car wiring issue

2001
Chevrolet
Cavalier
2.2L
221,000 miles
2-door coupe
base trim
4-speed automatic

My car has been running fine, but recently had a freak wiring occurrence. One day all of a sudden my low and high beams and windshield wipers stopped working both of which happened at the same time, this lasted for an hour, they turned back on and they have been fine ever since, but i am trying to find out why this happened. When this happened the daytime running lights, turning signals, and running lights still worked even though the low and high beams didn't. and the windshield washer still worked even though the wiper motor did not. It seems like it may be a bad ground because both of these things went out then came back on at the same time, but i don't know where to begin looking.

Response From Hammer Time

You won't be able to troubleshoot anything as long as it's working properly.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

As HT said testing while working isn't going to prove anything. I would look for existing ground straps or maybe even add one or two if out of harm's way won't hurt anything and cheap enough. Straps should be both to firewall and to probably radiator support metal from engine block? Waiting for that crap to happen no doubt in the dark while raining can't be any fun,

T

Response From Discretesignals

You should check ground G102. The wiper motor and headlamp switch use that as a common ground. That ground connects to the body at the left rear of the engine compartment on the frame rail.

You should also check the ground at the battery neg cable that attaches to the battery tray. They are known to corroded and cause high resistance.

Even if they look good, remove them and clean them up using a wire brush or sandpaper. Make sure the surface they touch is clean and free of paint or rust.

Response From MrGibbons

It has been about two weeks since I have cleaned the grounds on my car. I haven't had any issues since. I think cleaning the ground g102 solved my problem. Thank you!

Response From MrGibbons

I just cleaned the ground on the battery tray, but i am having trouble finding the G102 ground.

EDIT: found it...
It is right underneath of the outer edge of the battery tray.

I cleaned the ground G102 off and will wait a week to see if this happens again and report back to this thread.
