wiper blade arm

Question From Guest on wiper blade arm

my spring came off wiper blade arm how to replace on a 1998 ford f-150

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Pry up the little cover on the bottom of wiper arm, remove nut, remove wiper arm. If spring is not broken or if the spring seats are not destroyed, re hook it and re-install arm. Just be careful to install it where it came off so it will be in the correct operating position.

Wiper Blade won't come off

Question From Guest on Wiper Blade won't come off

I HATE replacing wiper blades because they are such a pain in the you-know-what. I thought I got lucky this time because on my '95 Bonneville I got some Bosch wipers, discarded the instructions which seemed to come from Mars and figured out how to take off the driver's side and replaced it with a new blade. No problem.

The problem now is I can't take the passenger side blade assembly off. It simply will not budge!!! I am lifting the tab as far as it will go but the assembly will not move. I tried to pry it open with a screwdriver but that only worked a little. I am at my wit's end.

The old blade's rubber is off the track and I'm afraid I might scratch the windshield with the metal trim so I have to do something. Any suggestions?

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

If my old brain hasn't failed completely, I think you need to squeeze the lock, not pull it up. It should be the hook type and the lock releases by squeezing.

WIPERS

Question From Guest on WIPERS

my 01 buick regals wiper blades come to rest at the top of the wipe instead of returning at the bottom of the windshield, they operate just fine but wont go back to what I would call the start position. Any ideas?

Response From mw1871

Thank you DanD for your response. My 89 Venture van was doing the same thing. The spring loaded shoe was sticking and about 30 minutes to find the tiny part, lube, and free up. It would have been quicker as it is 12 degrees out side and I dont move very fast under these conditions. Keep up the good work.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

What has likely happened is that the mechanical parking cam’s bracket tab has bent over just out of reach of a spring loaded shoe or catch (whatever you want to call it) is not catching the tab.
When the wipers are running the motor turns in one direction, when you shut the wipers off the motor change’s directions. When this happens this shoe is suppose to hit (catch) the tab changing the cam’s orientation and pulls the wipers to the bottom of the windshield.
You’ll have to get to this cam that is attached to the crank arm of the wiper motor; remove the rubber boot and see if the tab is bent; I’m not talking bent over flat; as little as a 32 of an inch or less is all it takes. If so bend it back into position so this “shoe” will contact it after you turn the wipers off and the motor is making its one rev. backwards.
I’ve also seen this shoe become partly seized and the little flat spring is not strong enough to push the shoe out all the way. A little penetrating oil and working the shoe back and forth usually fixes this, as long as the spring isn’t broken. If so you’re into a new assembly.
Once you see this wiper’s parking cam first hand; it’ll make more sense, as in what I’ve tried to explain.
Dan.

06 Impala Wiper Blades and Rear Doors

Question From Pheonyx on 06 Impala Wiper Blades and Rear Doors

Ok, I have 2 issues with my 2006 Chevy Impala LS.

1.) About a week ago, while driving to Sandusky (a good hour drive), it was raining, so I had my wipers on. About half way through the drive, my wind shield wipers got stuck in the upright position. I stopped at a gas station, and was able to push the blades back down. I tried to flick my wipers and got no movement out of them, but I could hear the motor run for them. So what I need to know about this issue, is how do I reach the motor for my wipers and what could possibly be the issue. The mechanic at work told me it might be as simple as the clip that holds the wipers to the motor could have came off. Its one of those things I'd like to do myself if possible especially with winter beginning to loom.

Response From samg.

Well, instead of doing all that, pull the wiper caps off and see if the hold down bolt is moving. If it is you most likely have bad wiper arms.

It really doesn't sound good that you forced them down though, and to be honest it'd be strange if both wipers stopped at the same time. I'd bet that some part of the linkage in the wiper transmission has gone bad.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The wipers didn't both strip at the same time and the linkage has been suggested twice already.

Response From Discretesignals

Your mechanic is probably on the right track.

You'll have to remove the wiper arms and cowl grille inlet panels to get access to the wiper motor and transmission to see what happened and what needs to be replaced.

Response From Hammer Time

Please stick to one problem per question. It gets much too hard to follow. You can start another question for the other problem.

You're not going to know the answer to that until you remove the cowling cover and examine the motor and linkage.

Change Your Own Wipers - It's Easy!

Showing 2 out of 3 Posts | Show 1 Hidden Posts
Question From Wipers123 on Change Your Own Wipers - It's Easy!

You can save a ton of time and money changing your own windshield wiper blades. I've found there is a lot of anxiety with many people. Here's what I recommend:

1. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP that most people skip
and if they did it, their fears will be gone. Are you ready? Go look at your wipers and how they are attached to the arm. Look at them. Touch them. It will be apparent that it's super easy and they simply snap off and the new ones snap on.

2. (optional) Watch "How To Change / Replace / Install Windshield Wiper" videos online. If you did step 1, you probably can skip step 2, but if you do step 2, I highly recommend doing step 1 FIRST. If a picture is worth 1,000 words than getting the wipers in your hands and in front of your eyes is worth 1,000,000. So, only watch video after looking and feeling.

3. Buy your wipers online! Going to the store is usually an hour-long proposition at best on average. If you go to the right place online, it will take you about 5-10 minutes, and the wiper lookup will be faster and more accurate than using the paper application guide books at the store. If you have the budget, I recommend upgrading to beam blades because they work better and look better. Almost every major wiper brand - like TRICO - has one or two choices in beam blades. You won't regret it.

4. Get It Done (when its not raining or snowing)! When your wipers conveniently arrive at your door (which serves as an excellent reminder that you need to change your wiper blades), all you're looking for is some reasonable-to-good weather and about 2-15 minutes depending on your skill level and if you're replacing 1, 2 or 3 wipers. If necessary, do step 1 & 2 again...look, feel, learn...THEN jump in. Remember, in almost all cases, whether there's a tab or button you have to press - they simply snap off and the new ones snap on. Also, each replacement wiper blade comes with simple, easy-to-follow illustrated instructions.

So, to recap - your biggest time-waster is procrastination and anxiety and the best way to fight that is to take a look at your wipers and get them in your hands. The next biggest time waster is buying them at the retail store - go online instead - you'll save time, money and your wiper blade lookup will be easier - all you need is your make, model, year, engine of your vehicle and that info is clearly on your insurance card, registration card, vehicle title and in many cases right in your manual. I'd start with insurance and registration since it's probably in your glove box or file cabinite.

Lastly -
don't forget about my tip on beam blades - I use TRICO NeoForm Beam Blades and they're the best I've ever had (and they look great).

Good Luck!!

Response From dmac0923 Top Rated Answer

ummmm someone actually made a how to video on "how to" change your wiper blades????????? WOW i guess they never saw the "How To" diagrams on the back of the package lol

Response From Guest

Yes indeed... Different strokes for different strokes. That's why I wrote this article: people have false anxiety that leads to procrastination that can lead to unsafe driving conditions. At any rate, there are step-by-step written instructions and videos online all over the place. I'm with you - I use the illustrated instructions on the back of the wiper blade package!!

Jeff
