Question From diaz418198 on 95 Astro windshield washer pump works but does not pump.

tried new pump, same thing, pump runs but dos not pump.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

Start tracing the hose from the pump to the windshield, more than likely there is a leak or break in the hose.... Hit the pump a bunch of times and look for the puddle....

Question From youngblood on 2006 Nissan Altima windshield washer pump

Having trouble diagnosing the problem - washer fluid won't pump. Fuse is OK but washer pump is not getting power???

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

General + questions: Do wiper come on when you request washer at all? If not that's the first place to look.

If they do and no fluid or pumping follow wire for what's missing - you said power but needs ground too to work. Remember that near all I ever saw wiper motor must be running or no power sent on to pump,

Question From Dale on windshield wiper motor / 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis

Subject: RE: windshield wiper & washer trouble
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I have 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis. The windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump motor work only when they want to. Sometimes they won't work at the same time. I might drive for up to 20 minutes with the wiper switch on before the wiper motor will cut in. Some times but not always. Sometimes will come on sooner. I hope there is help out there. Thanks.

Hmmm,

Correct me if I'm wrong, both "windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump motor " work only when they want to.

I would think there is either a short somewhere in the system.

Or your windsheild wiper switch may be faulty. This once happened to me with my directional signal and I needed to replace the switch that was inside the steering column. But since both the windshield wiper motor and windshield washer pump motor work on and off I would think its leaning toward a switch.

Windshield washer pump wiring

Question From Rangerj on Windshield washer pump wiring

I have a 1989 ford ranger 2.9 4x4 xlt automatic trans with over 100,000 miles. The wires at the bottom of the windshield washer resevoir have been cut by previous owner for some unknown reason. I need to rewire the pump since the other end of these wires are missing but I do not know where to run the wires to connect to the power switch, I need advice, diagrams photos or magic wand. thanks

Response From Rangerj Top Rated Answer

I answered my own question and thought I would share it. I removed the washer resevoir and found the original wires hiding there (DUH) I should have done this to start with.

2002 Focus ZX5 windshield washer pump not running

Question From msaeger on 2002 Focus ZX5 windshield washer pump not running

Hello,

I have a 2002 Focus ZX5, 152K miles. I am not getting any washer fluid coming out of either the front or rear jets.

I don't think I hear the pump running.

The wipers do work on the front and rear.

I think the wiper motor and washer pump are on the same fuse from looking online at fuse descriptions but I don't know for sure.

With having front and rear washers run by two switches wouldn't there need to be two pumps or do they do it some other way?

Response From msaeger

Glad I didn't try digging into this one to fix it now today after it got up to 20 something it is working. Something was probably just froze.

I need a heated garage I think :)

Response From Discretesignals

Maybe you should drain your washer tank and put washer fluid in that can go down to the temp. You don't want the water in there to freeze and crack your pump or lines.

Response From nickwarner

Blue washer fluid turns into slush at those temps. You need to run the purple stuff when it gets real cold out.

Response From Discretesignals

The wipers and washer motor share the same fuse (F56). The washer motor's polarity is reversed to cause the motor to spin backwards and feed the rear glass sprayer. If you don't hear the washer motor, you need to test for power and a ground at the washer motor connector while activating the washer. If you have power and ground, more than likely the washer motor is faulty.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

If you haven't done much electrical troubleshooting before, the easy way to do this is going to be getting a 12v test light which you can get at any parts store or tool shop for maybe ten bucks or so. Hook the clip onto the battery negative or a known good ground. Now probe in the back of the terminal of the plug, making sure you are actually getting contact with the metal. With someone holding down the wiper button see if the light will come on probing either of the terminals. If it does that means you have power. To check for ground, hook the clip of the light onto battery positive. Touching something with a ground will cause the light to come on, as lightbulbs are not polarity sensitive and will light up so long as they have power and ground.

This vid may help you make sense of electrical diagnosis. Eric gives pretty good information geared to the newer/ DIY type like yourself trying to get your hands dirty and save a few bucks.

Response From msaeger

So now the other day when I tried it I can hear the pump run. Nothing coming out still though. Maybe the inlet is plugged? Waiting until it gets warm enough to be outside and work on it. It's -15 now :)
