Question From mebennui on 97 Pontiac Grand Prix

This is puzzling me: My car starts, runs for about 20 seconds and then goes dead. The radio and the door locks do not work. It will start every time and go dead every time. The window motor was removed last month-could this be cauing a short? Please help!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Egad!! That's a different problem.

I think I would pull fuses for those items and see if it makes a difference. Have never had a power window cause such a thing but there's always a first. T

Response From mebennui

Thanks, Tom. Pulled the fuses for those options-they looked fine. Have tried gunning the engine when it starts-doesnt run long enuf for this to help! It prolly overdue for a tune-up..could this be causing these weird problems?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

A tune up can make a car run better but generally is periodic maintenance and shouldn't prevent your car from running.

Couple ideas:

Get a 12V test light and when the car is down test for power at both sides of fuses and especially the fuel pump fuse with key in run position. Fuses for dash lighting will be dead at both sides unless you have the lights on.

Just once in decades I found the transfer box at firewall bad (underhood) where all power enters the cabin if you find no power that would be next. On spade type connectors just give them a sight bend or twist but just a little. It should be packed with grease in there from factory and have perhaps just one hold down bolt. It's a guess but this is a common demoninator for whacked problems.

That and certain aftermaket stuff like theft controls, stereo stuff that has butchered wiring can be the source. Keep us posted, T

Response From mebennui

I will get on the latest you have suggested-thanks, Tom! So: some type of fuse in the fuel pump can cause the engine to die? I didnt know there was a fuse there!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The path should be from unfused battery power to fuse box, then on to low pressure swithc, then to a relay and on to compressor. Like Hanzel and Grettle follow the path. If you know you get power you should be able to forget all before it. T

Response From mebennui

Alrighty, Tom~the mechanic says the car wont start because of a problem in the security override system and they dont do that kinda work-so I guess this means...what? Towing it to the nearest Pontiac dealer? Is there anything I can do? Thanks for your time

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you have a factory security system a dealer will help. If after market find out what company made it and who installs them. There are quite a few. Even if I knew I could never post how to break it on the web. Best I can do for now, T

Response From mebennui

LOLOL Its a factory installed system-and the dealer cant get to it before next week! Plus, now I hafta have it towed from the mechanic's shop to the dealer-jeez! I was hoping there was some temporary override so I could drive it to the dealer~such is life!
Thanks for all your advice and have a wonderful week!

A/C only works when idling or not pressing on the gas

Question From robertdew76 on A/C only works when idling or not pressing on the gas

I have a 2002 pontiac sunfire. The A/C only works when the car is idling in Park. The car will surge when in drive and just idling. Sometimes the A/C works when driving as long as you are not accelerating.

Response From robertdew76

I apologize, I am referring to the temperature of the air. It only blows cold air when in park...or sometimes when driving if I'm not accelerating.

Response From Hammer Time

Have you checked to see if the compressor is running when the problem occurs?

Response From robertdew76

I haven't. I think I can trust my wife to not let off the brake while the car is in gear:)

Response From Hammer Time

LOL You shouldn't have to stand right in front of it. Don't tempt her.........LOL

Response From robertdew76

LOL...I will give it a try. Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

Watch for the center part of the pulley to be turning. The out pulley will always be turning.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Hammer; I'm not an A/C guy, but what about loss of vacuum to the blend doors? Just a thought.

Response From Hammer Time

Hammer; I'm not an A/C guy, but what about loss of vacuum to the blend doors? Just a thought.
Loren
SW WA

That's why I asked the temp question. Vacuum can't effect temp since the blend doors are electric.

Another guess w/o pressures posted. This can be the results of overcharged system. Has it been messed with refrigerant wise since it last worked properly?

The pressures aren't going too matter much if the compressor isn't running and we haven't been able to determine that yet.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Electric blend doors? Told you I wasn't an A/C guy. LOL. What will they think of next? Geeez. Had a '49 Cadillac in with hydraulic power windows and top. We got 'em all working. Nothing should suprise me, anymore.

Response From Hammer Time

Ford and some GM's have been using electric blend door motors for over 20 years. The mode and recirc doors are the only ones still using vacuum.

This particular one is a cable though.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Face it Loren and speaking for myself, by the time I get my head that far up under a dash to see what's used you need to call 911 for the "jaws of life" to get me back out - LMAO. Ain't gettin' old fun?

Yes - hydraulic window motors, vacuum wiper motors, door locks, trunk releases and the list goes on!

T

Response From Hammer Time

Man! You guys must be out there...............LOL

I dealt with the vacuum wipers but the other stuff is even before me.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Response From Hammer Time

Are you referring to the air flow through the vents or the temp of the air?

Question From majin on 2000 grand am, Door wont open!!

Hi, I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. recently the button to unlock the door got jammed and i can't unlock the passenger door. I tried forcing the button to unlock but it doesn't go any further than half way. i can i fix this problem?
i was thinking about using a slim jim to try to open the door and then taking off the panel to see if i can see any problems.

Does anybody know what could be the problem? what would i look for and do i have to take off the panel to fix it? Thanks for the help guys.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Some failed door lock motors prevent use of manual unlock!! Nice feature huh? Use tons of WD-40 and wiggle manual unlock back and forth. If you get the door open take the panel off right away before closing again. Disconnect lock motor linkage so it works manually till you get what you need for the fix. These things are a pest!! Keep at it you'll get it,

Response From majin Top Rated Answer

Thanks Tom, you're the best. My driver's side door's window motor went out, these doors suck!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sometimes it makes you wonder. Times like "Walton's Mountain" - "Little House on the Prarie" and "Bonanza" start to look good again!!!! I know it's not funny but sometimes a fiesty horse was easier to deal with That and we have the audacity to call this PROGRESS!! Try to have a great weekend,
