94 Cadillac Fleetwood ABS/Traction Control Lights

Showing 6 out of 6 Posts
Question From Juston on 94 Cadillac Fleetwood ABS/Traction Control Lights

Have a 94 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. It doesn't seem to have as much acceleration power as before. I read online that my car starts off in 2nd gear due to the ABS/Traction Control being on. So I ran the cars self diagnostic to figure out why ABS/Traction Control Lights stay on and it came back right rear wheel speed sensor circuit continuity malfunction OR RPM signal malfunction. I know how to get to the speed sensor but any help on how i would go about finding the RPM Signal?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I'm surprised light is on and defaults to traction control so far but Caddy's do funky designs and always did.
Try this as maintenance anyway with a RWD drum brake vehicle take drums off and dump out the dust and it's got plenty if you don't do that routinely.

That dust will or can fool sensors for either ABS traction control I think can only disallow 1st gear on this layout not choose which wheel?

No matter check dust situation inside. DO NOT BREATH THAT DUST!

Problem here on how to clean it out as special vacuum w special filter would be the way. IDK how to totally avoid that dust but might try a disposable parts cleaner brush or something to clean and vac out. Throw out that vacuum filter and do this outdoors.

Overcautious as that dust really is nasty to breathe. It works but just don't blow it clean with compressed air.

Magnetic sensors at or near wheels and brakes can pick up dirt, dust from brake or road and give a false signal. You might even see it with no gap showing on some things like it sensing speeds. Still surprised you can't just shut the traction control off unless integrated with ABS somehow?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Add to that: Use of "second" gear was the way you gained traction either selecting it with shifter for "2" on some (not GMs though) and it only stayed in "2nd" or second and on up.

It's outdated for this as this engine has no power like older than this by a LOT where just wet roads you would spin wheels easily by mistake starting off.

As HT said it doesn't/shouldn't be taking away any engine power. It's just choosing a higher gear as you would with a standard shift in extremes of slipping, T

Response From Hammer Time

The ABS`system is not selecting any different gears. There should be no connection to that.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You are right - shouldn't be any connection. Being a doubting "Thomas" this IMO was the last RWD chassis for a "Car" that GM made and only brought this back due to lost sales. Makes me just wonder what AMC like tricks might have been pulled to cobble together one more model year of a full size car at the same time making what was to totally replace it and forget but did quit making this car for a model year or part of a model year? Forget now on that, T

Response From Hammer Time

The ABS/traction control lights being on is not going to effect engine performance. It merely means those systems are disabled due to a malfunction.

................................................................................
Condition

Some customers may comment on ABS activation at low speeds, usually below 8 km/h (5 mph). Upon investigation, the technician will find no DTCs set.

Cause

The cause of this condition may be an increased air gap between the wheel speed sensor and the hub reluctor ring due to rust and debris built up on the sensor mounting surface.

Correction

Measure AC voltage and clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surfaces.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in the General Information sub-section of the Service Manual.
2. Disconnect both the front wheel speed sensor connectors at the frame and harness.
3. Place a Digital Volt Meter (DVM) across the terminals of each wheel speed sensor connector.
4. Rotate the wheel clockwise approximately one revolution per second. The minimum reading should be at least 350 ACmV's. If the reading is less than 350 ACmV's, remove the wheel speed sensor. Refer to the applicable Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement procedure in the ABS sub-section of the Service Manual.
5. Plug the wheel speed sensor bore in order to prevent debris from falling into the hub during service.
6. Clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface using a wire brush, sand paper, emery cloth, scotch brite, or other suitable material. Be sure to thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor surface. There should be no rust or corrosion.
7. Check the sensor head to determine if it has been warped/distorted due to the corrosion build up or other causes. Check the mounting surface on the sensor head for flatness by placing it on the edge of a metal machinists scale or other suitable straight edge to measure the flatness. Check the sensor for flatness in multiple (minimum 3) positions/directions. If the sensor head is distorted, replace the sensor.
8. Apply (spray) two thin coats of the specified rust penetrating lubricant (corrosion inhibitor) to the complete sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub. Allow to dry for 3-5 minutes between coats. Use ONLY Rust Penetrating Lubricant, P/N 89022217 (in Canada, P/N 89022218).
9. When the corrosion inhibitor is dry to the touch (about 10 minutes), apply a thin layer of bearing grease to the hub surface and sensor O-ring prior to sensor installation. Use ONLY Wheel Bearing Lubricant, P/N 01051344 (in Canada, P/N 993037).
10. Install either the original sensor or a new one in the hub. Ensure that the sensor is seated flush against the hub. Refer to the applicable Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement procedure in the ABS sub-section of the Service Manual.
11. Place the DVM across the sensor terminals and recheck the voltage while rotating the wheel. The voltage should now read at least 350 ACmV's.

Question From rhayes on Caddy ABS problems

ABS problems-'04 cadillac CTS 64k-at slow speeds the brake petal pulsated just when turning left or right. left off petal and reapply brakes seem to work ok. no problems at higher speeds. have been to several shops and show NO error codes. problem very intermitant, but does seem to happen more often.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

This is likely a wheel speed senor. It may not be setting codes due to the sensor not going far enough out of its parameters for the electronic brake control module (EBCM) to recognize a fault but enough to set up a false ABS activation.

The wheel speed sensors on this vehicle are an integral part of the wheel bearing assembly.
If a wheel bearing is beginning to fail and become slightly loose (you may not feel the looseness by hand) that during a turn the bearing is allowed to tip slightly; due to the weight of the vehicle pushing on the bearing.
If this is what’s happening; the air gap between the sensor and the reluctor (trigger) ring opens or closes up; changing the sensors output.
The EBCM thinks it’s seeing a wheel slowing down, faster then the others and becomes active in an attempt to bring it back inline with the others.

With the use of a scan tool, set up to read wheel speed sensor speeds; a technician might be able to pick out which wheel is causing this?
I’ve also have had to use a lab scope connected to the individual sensors; road test the vehicle, while monitoring the sensors real-time wave pattern; when a scan tool was to slow to pick out the fault.

On a last resort you could start changing wheel bearing assemblies until you find which is causing the problem but that can be very expensive.

Dan.
